"Stop joking around," Xin Huohuo said, turning her back to him. "Help me see if there's something wrong with the mark on my back."
She had a dark red birthmark on her right shoulder blade.
The mark was as large as a grown man's fist—an irregular circle with a thick, branch-like shape extending from the top, accompanied by crooked, sprawling tendrils. It was incredibly ugly. Because of it, she could never wear anything with straps or a low back. She had once wanted to take up swimming, but people would always point and stare, with some even running over to gossip and ask about it. She found it so irritating that she gave up on the idea entirely.
