The next day, Renee ate breakfast and drove to the police station to pick up Sawyer. Together, they headed to Evening Maple's home.
Evening Maple lived in an old residential complex. The buildings were only eight stories high and had no elevators. Her apartment was on the fifth floor.
Renee and Sawyer stood outside apartment 503. Renee raised her hand and knocked.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK—
"WOOF!" Sunny the golden retriever's bark instantly sounded from inside. "Renee is here!"
The bark was followed by the sound of claws scratching at the door.
"WOOF! Grandma, hurry up and open the door!"
Evening Maple hadn't heard the knocking. Seeing Sunny pawing at the door, she asked with an amused laugh, "Buddy, do you want to go out and play?"
Sunny strained to lift his front paws, trying to reach the doorknob. "WOOF! Grandma, open the door for Renee!"
