"Are you at the Azure Bay Villa?" Vincent Hawthorne asked, cutting straight to the point. "The one Big Brother planned on giving you."
Faye Vaughn made a noncommittal sound, finding the question odd.
She had no intention of lying, so she answered truthfully, "Yes, I'm here right now. Is there a problem?"
"So it was you after all."
Vincent Hawthorne's tone was strange, and then he abruptly hung up.
Faye Vaughn was left utterly confused. 'What did he mean, "So it was you after all"?'
'His voice had sounded hostile. Was he standing up for Vivian Windsor?'
Faye Vaughn's guess was correct. Vincent Hawthorne was in his office at his law firm, and sitting on the guest sofa was Vivian Windsor.
Vivian's usually radiant face was wan, as if she hadn't slept well.
With red-rimmed eyes and a tearful voice, she began, "Vince, your big brother refused to spend New Year's Eve with me because of that woman, Faye Vaughn, didn't he?"
