Chapter 49: Creeper of Secrets.

"Do I look stupid to you!" Ash suddenly said, zooming toward Caius, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. "We all heard him; he said Drex is dead!"
Caius shrugged, but Ash's hands tightened, still holding on. Some Vampire' nearly ran forward, but he glanced at them; a slight indication that they would never win.
Caius blinked, unbothered. "And?"
"Is he dead?!" Ash's voice roared with anger.
Caius could feel his strength growing weaker from how close Ash was to him; the gift was troublesome, and he hated it.
"Yes," Caius replied, and Ash's hands let go; his revenge was stolen from him. Clenching his fists, he nearly dashed to the woods beside them.
"Are you not going to ask?" Caius suddenly said, causing Ash to glance back. "Come on… ask me who killed him."
Ash hesitated. Drex was dead; he inwardly wondered why he was still listening.
"Did Aro know?" Ash asked, ignoring the question shot at him.
Caius smiled, unhinged to hide the evil behind it. "Of course."
Ash kept quiet, thinking, trying his hardest to find a reason.
"Come on," Caius grew impatient. He was growing too old for this. "Ask me, boy!"
"Who killed him?"
Caius's smile grew brighter. "The halfling."
Ash frowned; he didn't believe it.
Caius stepped forward. "What?"
"He wouldn't—"
"He did," Caius lied again, hands folding behind him. "And sadly for you, the more you grieve, the more time wasted. If you must, ask him yourself, but for now, keep trailing his gift, and maybe I'll let you kill him yourself."
"Why?"
A frown overwhelmed Caius's expression. "Huh? Why? Were you not told your mission?"
"It was a deal," Ash said. "I was supposed to track him down, and you people had to give Drex to me… and you broke it."
"Broke it?" Caius raised a brow. "Who? Us? Delusional fool, Drex was stolen from you… by the half bread!"
Caius stepped forward. "So find him."
Maybe they were right, because in the next second, Ash turned his eyes beside them, their orbs looking past a mountain peak. "It's leading west."
And the whole horde of Vampire ran in flashes, vanishing in that instant, leaving Ash and Caius to remain.
Caius walked closer toward Ash, who had now turned away, placing a hand on his shoulder. "If you do that again, I'll kill you."
Caius dashed forward next, leaving Ash to remain standing there. And for a moment, Ash's eyes turned toward a mountain in the opposite direction, wondering if he should still follow behind them.
And in that instant, memories of Troy came to mind. From the killings to the slow-growing friendship, it all came in a flash. But after another second, the image of Sliver flickered in his subconscious, burning whole, still begging to be saved.
Ash's blood-red eyes brightened, and much like the rest, he dashed after them.
Done was done, and soon he would understand why all feared the comrade he was now hunting. Just like Drex, Ash would meet his end.

"What are you talking about—"
"Did you drink someone's blood?" Rosalie asked, ignoring Emmett, who tried stopping her from speaking. "Four bodies died last night… You might not be part of our coven, but keep to the rule—"
"The fuck are you people talking about?!" Troy replied. This was the first time they were hearing him swear. "Blood?"
Troy chuckled, shaking his head, turning to walk away.
"Was there anyone else following you?" Edward jumped in, causing Troy to turn. "Besides the Volturi, we need to know if anyone else is following you."
Troy slowly started backing away. "It doesn't matter."
But his instincts flicked the moment he turned to Jasper; the lad was using his powers on him.
Edythe stepped in front of Jasper the moment she read a fragment of Troy's mind, even if she could hear everything. One thing was absolute: danger. "Relax."
Edward didn't hear what Edythe heard, so he also turned to Troy, but the moment he invaded his mind, endless numbers flooded him, so he stopped.
Troy breathed. "Just stop doing that."
Truth be told, Jasper had stopped a while ago, but Troy was going off instinct, meaning he couldn't tell, so Jasper just nodded back.
"Look," Troy turned to Edward. "My business with the Volturi doesn't involve you, just don't worry about it."
But before Troy could walk away, Rosalie stepped forward. "What about Alice?"
Troy's heart beat within his chest, and they heard it. "What about her?"
Emmett, who was silent the whole time, felt agitated. "What do you mean, dude? You being here puts her at risk."
Troy raised a brow, and maybe that's when they all realized Troy didn't know what they were talking about.
Troy's phone buzzed within his pocket. Slowly, he picked it up. "Yeah… I'll be there."
After hanging up, Troy raised his eyes to them. "Yeah, I have to go… and tell Alice the art projects aren't needed anymore, we got a new teacher."
Troy turned, but his step halted midway. Just like the rest of them, Edward jolted his head the fastest. It was Bella, or at least her scent.
They clearly heard her retreating footsteps. And after a moment, Troy walked out.
Rosalie frowned at it, eyes glancing at Edward.
"He doesn't know about the imprint," Jasper whispered.
A week ago, they all wondered how Troy was in what seemed to be a relationship with Honey, while simultaneously having an imprint on Alice, but now, even though it was unclear, it kind of made sense.
"We need to get him to Carlisle," Edward said, and even if they didn't respond or nod to his words, they all kept silent in agreement.
Not knowing that Troy knew more than they acknowledged, he was a pretender.
Much like his reflection, and the shadow behind it. But soon, all would reveal itself. Very soon.
