Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Shadows and Tides

The days after the festival were filled with restless whispers. Cancer found herself noticing Scorpio more often—at the marketplace, at the docks, even in the quiet corners of the town where shadows lingered. He was always alone, always watchful, as if the world had betrayed him too many times to trust its warmth.

One afternoon, Cancer carried a basket of herbs to the docks. The air smelled of salt and fish, and the chatter of townsfolk filled the pier. Pisces sat nearby, telling dreamy tales to children, his voice soft and melodic. "The sea," he said, "is a mirror of our hearts. It hides treasures, but it also hides storms." The children clapped, enchanted.

Cancer smiled at Pisces, then turned—and there was Scorpio, standing at the edge of the pier, staring at the horizon. She hesitated, then walked toward him.

"You don't join them?" she asked gently, nodding toward Pisces and the children.

Scorpio shrugged, his cloak shifting with the wind. "I watch. It's easier than pretending."

"Pretending what?"

"That I belong." His words were blunt, but his eyes betrayed a quiet ache.

Cancer's heart tightened. "You belong more than you think."

Before Scorpio could reply, Leo strode forward, his golden hair catching the sunlight. "Cancer, don't waste your kindness," Leo said, his voice booming with confidence. "Scorpio thrives in shadows. He doesn't deserve your light."

Scorpio's jaw clenched. "I don't need your approval, Leo."

Leo smirked. "Then prove it. Step into the light. Show her you're more than a shadow."

Cancer placed a hand on Scorpio's arm, calming him. "He doesn't need to prove anything. Love isn't a performance."

Leo raised an eyebrow but said no more, though his words lingered like embers in Scorpio's mind.

Later that evening, Virgo approached Cancer as she arranged herbs in her small home. "You're too trusting," Virgo warned, her tone sharp but protective. "Scorpio's passion is dangerous. He'll hurt you, even if he doesn't mean to."

Cancer sighed. "Virgo, I know the risks. But love without risk isn't love at all."

Virgo frowned, shaking her head. "Guard your heart, Cancer. Don't give it all away."

Scorpio overheard from outside, his chest tightening. He wanted to promise he would never hurt her—but he knew his intensity sometimes cut too deep.

That night, Cancer returned to the pier. Scorpio was there, as always, watching the waves. She stood beside him, silent for a long time.

Finally, Scorpio spoke. "They all doubt me. Maybe they're right. Maybe I'll hurt you."

Cancer turned to him, her eyes shimmering. "Scorpio, love isn't about being perfect. It's about choosing each other, again and again, even when the world doubts us."

He looked at her, the storm in his chest quieting. "Then I choose you. Even if the tides pull me under, I'll choose you."

Cancer smiled, tears falling freely. "And I'll choose you. Even in your shadows, I see light."

The waves crashed softly against the pier, as if the sea itself blessed their vow.
