The next morning felt wrong.
Elena noticed it immediately.
The apartment was quieter than usual, not peaceful careful. Like every sound was being measured. When she stepped into the kitchen, Adrian was already there, fully dressed, phone in hand.
He didn't look up.
"Good morning," she said.
"Morning," he replied, polite. Neutral.
Too neutral.
She poured herself water, watching him from the corner of her eye. He was creating space on purpose. Standing farther away. Keeping his voice even.
The distance hurt more than the mistake itself.
"I'll be out most of today," he said. "Meetings."
"Oh," she replied. "Okay."
He nodded once and turned to leave.
"Adrian."
He paused but didn't face her.
"About last night"
"It shouldn't have happened," he said quickly. "And it won't again."
The finality in his voice made her chest tighten.
"I know," she said. "I just wanted to say..."
He finally looked at her then. His eyes were guarded, but something softer flickered beneath.
"This is me protecting you," he said. "Even if it doesn't feel kind."
Then he was gone.
The door closed.
Elena stood alone in the kitchen, staring at nothing.
She hadn't imagined it.
The moment.
The connection.
But now it had a consequence.
Later that evening, a message appeared on her phone from an unknown number.
Be careful who you trust. Some men don't cross lines by accident.
Her fingers went cold.
For the first time, Elena wondered if the kiss wasn't the real mistake.
Maybe it was believing she was safe after it.
