As Alex stepped closer, both McGee and Nowan felt it becoming hard to breathe, as if the air in the office had suddenly solidified.
Their senses dulled. They could no longer hear the sounds outside the office.
Their heartbeats sped up, cold sweat pouring down their backs.
At that moment, Alex stopped in front of Nowan.
A golden glow lit up in his eyes.
"Do you know?"
"If it weren't for the fact that I think this world is more interesting when it's lively, you, everyone here, even this city and this country, would no longer exist."
"So you should praise my mercy, and tell me whose idea this was."
"Remember, you only get one chance."
Alex reached out, gently lifting Nowan's work badge, and smiled faintly.
Nowan's Adam's apple bobbed up and down. His teeth trembled slightly as he said, "This… this was the idea of our bureau chief, Ms. Jenny Cloment. She believes you need to familiarize yourself with some of the Department of Defense's work procedures through this method."
Alex let out a short "Ha."
"Then should I thank her as well?"
Then he looked toward McGee.
"Could you take me to meet Ms. Jenny?"
Only then did McGee realize he should speak.
"Of course. Of course you can."
———
A short while later, when Alex stepped out of the elevator with his hands behind his back and McGee leading the way, they arrived outside the office of the director of the Contract Administration Bureau.
The office door was tightly shut. The secretary outside stood up.
"What can I help you with?"
She couldn't help stealing several glances at Alex, carefully hiding the smile in her eyes. But Alex easily saw through the subtle changes happening inside the woman's body.
Alex reached a conclusion.
She wanted to throw herself into his arms.
McGee cleared his throat, "Homelander would like to meet Director Jenny."
The beautiful secretary finally snapped out of Alex's charm and shook her head.
"I'm sorry, Homelander."
"Ms. Jenny is currently meeting with an important guest. She's unable to see you for the moment."
Alex smiled slightly, "No. She can."
Then his eyes lit up.
Inside the office, two women were sitting in the reception area.
Jenny Cloment was a woman with dark complexion, in her early forties. Her hair was cut short, giving her a sharp and capable look.
Her guest was a beautiful woman in her early thirties with striking features.
"Victoria, I'll support you. Like you said, letting superhumans enter the national system is an extremely dangerous thing."
Just as the female bureau chief was saying this, she suddenly noticed a golden dot appear on the wall of the office.
Then the dot moved in a circle, outlining a rectangle. The rectangular section of wall that had been cut out suddenly collapsed.
With a loud crash, dust burst into the air, startling the two women.
Then they saw a handsome man walk in, wearing a black combat suit with a red cape, golden hair shining, a smile on his face.
Homelander!
The bureau chief immediately stood up, "What is the meaning of this?"
"Homelander, what do you want!"
But Alex's gaze had already landed on the beautiful woman sitting on the sofa beside her.
Of course he recognized her.
This was the superhuman congresswoman from the world of the Boys, Victoria Neuman, the one capable of making people's heads explode.
Ignoring the Black bureau chief, Alex walked toward Victoria Neuman.
The congresswoman instinctively tried to stand up, but then she heard Alex say, "Sit. Don't move."
Then she saw the smiling man's eyes light up with golden points of light. His gaze seemed almost tangible.
Victoria could feel two burning spots moving across her face, then sliding down to her chest, continuing lower.
She understood.
This was Homelander's warning.
If that man wished, she would already have been sliced into two halves.
Alex walked forward with his hands behind his back, stopping beside Victoria Neuman. He bent down slightly and spoke softly beside the congresswoman's ear.
"I know who you are."
"So, Edgar is dead, and you're afraid?"
"You should be afraid."
"You should revere me, and then try to please me."
"Instead of sitting here with an old woman, discussing how to deal with me."
"So what do you say, Miss Victoria? Would you like to try giving me a little 'brainstorm'?"
Victoria didn't dare take a deep breath, and she certainly didn't dare try using her superpower on Alex.
Even the "superpower-blocking substance" couldn't kill Homelander.
She didn't believe her ability could do it either.
Alex was right. After Edgar died, she truly had been afraid.
Afraid that Alex would purge Edgar's faction. If that happened, she would certainly end up on the blacklist as well.
So she had used her identity to contact some officials who were also hostile toward superhumans, trying to save herself.
But she hadn't expected to run into Alex here.
After a moment, Victoria spoke softly, "I'll be at home tonight."
Alex froze for a moment. Then he realized what she meant and couldn't help letting out a small laugh.
"No, no, Miss Victoria. When I say please me, that's not what you're thinking."
"Although you do match my taste, and I wouldn't mind sampling your flavor."
"But for now, I don't have the time."
Victoria looked at him, "Then what do you want me to do?"
Alex leaned close to Victoria's ear. Looking at her full, round earlobe, he whispered softly, "Storm."
"You definitely know her."
"Find her."
"And I'll spare you… and your daughter."
Victoria's body trembled slightly.
Then she stood up and said to the Black bureau chief,
"Sorry, Director Jenny. I have something urgent, so I'll be leaving first."
The bureau chief immediately said, "Victoria, you don't need to be afraid. This is the Department of Defense. No one would dare cause trouble here!"
As she spoke, Alex walked over to the bureau chief's desk and picked up a photo frame.
He looked at the picture inside. It was a photo of Jenny together with her son.
"What are you doing? Put my things down."
The bureau chief walked over, looking at Alex with her eyebrows raised, her posture aggressive.
Victoria took the chance to leave, in case Alex changed his mind.
"Well, here's the thing."
Alex put the photo frame down and looked at the bureau chief with a smile.
"My office is far too empty. I'm not used to that."
"I hope the next time I come, it won't look like it does now."
"Also, considering we've only just met, I'll forgive you this time, ma'am."
Alex smiled at the Black bureau chief.
"Please don't let there be a next time."
"You wouldn't want to see what I look like when I'm angry."
After saying that, Alex opened the office door with his hands behind his back and walked out.
At that moment, the photo frame on Director Jenny's desk suddenly made a sharp crack, the glass surface splitting into countless fractured lines.
The bureau chief looked at the mess in the office and clenched her fists.
'Just you wait, Damn Homelander!'
'Once the project jointly developed by Dr. Vogelbaum and Dr. Kyle, the "Extraordinary Soldier", is completed…'
'That will be the day of your end!'
