BWDC:SDDK Chapter 132: Pisco, Batman's ATM
After the death of Daisuke Torakura, the fierce blizzard finally began to subside. It was as if even the heavens felt his death was a cause for celebration, as the dense clouds obscuring the moon finally drifted away.
Several hours passed.
Police cars from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department finally arrived at the Dracula Villa, struggling through the snow-covered roads. Inspector Megure, the leader of the group, trembled as he stepped out of the car. He looked remarkably young—mostly because he was nearly frozen solid.
Looking at the somewhat eerie Western-style villa before him, Inspector Megure's body shook once more. Why did this place look so grim?
Mouri and Ren Ichimonji were both at the scene. He couldn't help but wonder if the "yin energy" here was so heavy that a few vampires might actually spawn just to set the mood. He exchanged a glance with Wataru Takagi beside him, then gritted his teeth and led the way into the villa.
He would risk it! If he, Juzo Megure, was prepared to die, would a vampire even dare to fight him?
"Oh, so you're saying Daisuke Torakura was dressed in vampire clothes and pinned to death?"
"I actually thought Torakura was a real vampire for a second. And the culprit? Any leads? What? A confession?"
In the living room, Inspector Megure listened to Ren Ichimonji's explanation of the case. His eyes widened in shock. In all his years working in Beika Town, this was the first time he had seen a citizen choose to surrender immediately after committing a murder.
This was a true first!
Could he be taking the fall for someone else? No, according to other witnesses, only Ren Ichimonji and Shunsuke Tadokoro were at the scene. If Shunsuke Tadokoro was taking the fall, wouldn't that mean Ren was the killer?
Better not go down that path. Batman supposedly has a no-kill rule, right? He wondered if vampires were exempt from that rule.
"Which one is the culprit who surrendered?"
"Oh, Mr. Shunsuke Tadokoro? Pardon me, but did you recently move to Beika Town from another city?"
Shunsuke Tadokoro: "?"
Wait, I confessed, and I'm the sole suspect. You're not asking about the details of the case, but whether I'm a local? Is there some necessary connection between being a local and the likelihood of surrendering after a murder?
He started to feel like this Inspector Megure wasn't quite cut out for the job.
Beside them, Wataru Takagi was busy taking notes. The forensics officers who followed entered Torakura's room to photograph the body and collect evidence. Watching them, Fumio Doi felt his heart race with anxiety.
The anxiety peaked when an officer picked up a briefcase filled with manuscripts.
Fumio Doi immediately spoke up, "Wait, that... that briefcase is mine. Those are manuscripts to be published by the newspaper, the only copies. So... could you return them to me?"
Doi's heart hammered against his ribs. The two forensics officers exchanged confused looks.
You're admitting this bag is yours? Does that mean you entered the victim's room too?
An officer opened the briefcase and glanced at the contents. Just as he thought it was nothing special and was about to hand it back, Shuichi Hamura suddenly spoke.
"Officer, if I remember correctly, multiple counts of theft can be considered a criminal offense."
"Even if it doesn't fall under the jurisdiction of the First Investigation Division's violent crimes unit, it is still a crime. If I report it, can you take the suspect back to the headquarters and hand him over to the Second Investigation Division?"
The First Investigation Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department mainly handled violent crimes. Inspector Megure belonged to the third section of this division. Meanwhile, the Second Investigation Division handled "intelligent" white-collar crimes—most famously represented by Inspector Ginzo Nakamori.
By saying this, Shuichi Hamura was clearly intending to deal a heavy blow to Fumio Doi. He wanted Doi to take his years of stolen and plagiarized manuscripts and follow Daisuke Torakura into ruin.
One to prison, one to hell. A perfect match!
Doi's eyes bulged. He hadn't expected Shuichi Hamura to backstab him at a time like this. After all, Hamura was only at the Dracula Villa because Doi had invited him under the guise of discussing plot points with Torakura!
In truth, Shuichi Hamura hated Daisuke Torakura to the bone.
He and Etsuko Torakura were childhood sweethearts and were supposed to be married. But Daisuke Torakura had interfered, setting a trap for Etsuko's family company, eventually tricking them out of their shares and coercing Etsuko into marriage.
If it weren't for a "genius" like Fumio Doi constantly providing Torakura with manuscripts to plagiarize, Torakura's income would have dried up long ago. He never would have had the funds to trap Etsuko's company and force her into a marriage.
If Shunsuke Tadokoro's guilt hadn't been so obvious, Hamura might have even tried to help him. As long as Tadokoro didn't pin the murder on him or Etsuko, they would have happily played dumb!
There was no time to feel sad about Shunsuke Tadokoro being handcuffed. In the next moment, the person being led to the police car was Fumio Doi.
Watching Fumio Doi get taken away after failing his "chicken theft" attempt, Ren Ichimonji casually reminded the forensics officer to copy the files from Daisuke Torakura's computer. He suggested comparing them to the manuscripts in Doi's briefcase to check for "similarities."
As for whether this was inappropriate? The widow, Etsuko Torakura, had already consented. Unless Daisuke Torakura jumped up from the dead to object, no one could stop them!
[Low-difficulty public security mission completed!] [20 points reward has been credited, please check!] [Assisted Commissioner Gordon in solving a difficult problem, 10 points reward has been issued!]
After completing these two missions, Ren's total points returned to 60. He was still a long way from his goal of 1,000 points.
However, Ren already had some ideas on how to acquire the next batch of points.
He remembered that a member of the Black Organization with the code name Pisco ran a company in Tokyo.
Heh, I'll "dox" Pisco's company later and see what kind of shady deals are going on. If I find a Black Organization member I don't like, I'll bag them, give them a beatdown, and drop them off at the Tokyo Police Department.
That had to be worth at least 75 points, right?
Ren vaguely recalled that Pisco was a veteran member of the organization. He must have plenty of lucrative ties with other members in Tokyo.
As for what the Black Organization would do? Let them waste their time hunting for an internal mole!
"...What are you thinking about?"
Conan looked up at Ren and asked in a low voice, "Is it true that Shunsuke Tadokoro didn't actually want to surrender at first?"
"Did you convince him to do it?"
No one knew what had happened during those few minutes when the bedroom door was closed. But Conan had a feeling, which prompted the question.
"How did you know this incident would happen?"
Ren gave him a strange look and then replied, "Because, I'm Batman!"
Conan: "?"
What was that? Did some internal code just trigger?
