Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Semifinals – Alex vs. Kragthar the Bonebreaker

The Iron Pit had become a cauldron of madness by the time the semifinals arrived. The sand was no longer merely raked; it was churned into a dark, clotted slurry from hours of spilled blood, sweat, and vomit. The massive braziers roared higher than ever, fed fresh pitch by attendants who moved like shadows between the flames. Their light painted everything in hellish reds and flickering golds, turning the arena into a living wound under the night sky. The crowd had passed beyond drunkenness into something primal, faces flushed and twisted, mouths open in continuous howl, tankards long since emptied and now used as weapons to pound the stone benches in thunderous rhythm. Nobles in their shaded boxes no longer pretended at civility; they leaned over railings, silk sleeves stained with wine and sweat, shouting bets and insults with the same ferocity as the dock workers below. The air itself felt thick, humid with heat, smoke, and the copper-iron reek of blood that never quite settled.

Alex stepped onto the sand alone.

The announcer's voice cracked like a whip over the din.

"Slot A, semifinal match! Alex the Flamefist versus Kragthar the Bonebreaker!"

The roar that answered was less a sound and more a physical force, vibrating through the stone, rattling teeth, shaking ribs. It felt like the Pit itself was breathing, hungry.

Kragthar emerged from the opposite tunnel like a siege engine given legs.

Seven feet tall, almost as wide as two men, skin the gray of wet granite, muscle knotted and corded beneath crude iron plates bolted directly to flesh in places. His arms were thicker than most men's thighs; his hands ended in fists wrapped in spiked leather that looked like they could crush skulls without effort. No weapon, just those fists, each knuckle capped with a jagged steel rivet crusted dark with old blood. His face was a ruin of old scars, nose broken so many times it was flattened to a pulp, one eye milky-white and blind, the other burning with dull, animal rage. A necklace of finger bones rattled against his chest plate with every step.

He stopped at the center line, rolled his massive shoulders, and grinned; teeth filed to points.

"Flame-boy," he rumbled, voice like boulders grinding together. "I'm gonna snap your little arms like twigs. Then I'm gonna shove that shiny glove up your ass until you choke on it. Yield now and save me the trouble."

The crowd howled approval, some chanting "Bonebreaker! Bonebreaker!" others screaming for Alex to burn him alive.

Alex didn't speak.

He flexed the Flamefist Gauntlet once. The ruby in the palm flared, crimson, alive, heat rippling off his skin in visible waves. He drew his longsword in a slow, deliberate motion, point lowered toward the sand. Waited.

The horn blared.

Kragthar charged.

He crossed the ring in four earth-shaking steps, sand exploding beneath his boots, right fist cocked back, left swinging low like a wrecking ball aimed at Alex's ribs. The air itself seemed to compress ahead of him.

Alex didn't dodge.

He stepped forward, inside the swing, and met the left fist with his Flamefist Gauntlet.

The collision was cataclysmic.

Crimson fire detonated on impact, roaring outward in a white-hot corona. Kragthar's iron-wrapped knuckles glowed instantly cherry-red, then orange, then white. Leather wrapping ignited; skin beneath blistered and split open like overripe fruit. Fat bubbled up through cracks; muscle blackened and curled away from bone. The big man's scream tore through the Pit, high, wet, animal, as the heat ate down to tendon and marrow. His fist kept coming, momentum too great to stop, but the bones inside cracked and splintered from the thermal shock.

Alex twisted, let the ruined fist glance off his shoulder, and drove his longsword upward in a tight, vicious arc. The blade sliced through the meat of Kragthar's right bicep, deep, parting muscle down to bone, blood jetting in a bright, pulsing arc that painted Alex's face and chest. Kragthar staggered, arm hanging limp, then swung his left fist again, slower, weaker.

Alex caught it on his sword, steel ringing, then punched forward with the gauntlet.

Flame slammed into Kragthar's chest plate dead-center.

Armor buckled inward with a tortured screech. Padding ignited; flesh beneath cooked instantly, skin splitting open in black-edged cracks, fat liquefying and running down his torso in hot streams. Ribs cracked audibly, sharp pops beneath the roar, as heat gnawed muscle and cartilage. Kragthar's scream turned guttural, bubbling, as blood frothed at his lips from scorched lungs.

The crowd lost its mind, screaming, stomping, some spectators so frenzied they were climbing the barriers.

Alex pressed, merciless.

Sword slashed, precise, surgical, opening long, shallow cuts across Kragthar's thighs, arms, belly. Each strike parted skin and muscle just enough to bleed freely without killing; strips of flesh peeled back like wet parchment, exposing yellow fat and glistening red. Kragthar swung again, wild, desperate, left fist whistling past Alex's ear.

Alex ducked, came up inside the guard, and drove the Flamefist Gauntlet into Kragthar's side.

Fire detonated inward. Armor crumpled like foil. Bone snapped, sharp crack audible even over the crowd roar. Kragthar folded sideways, clutching his ribs, smoke curling from charred steel, blood bubbling at his lips in frothy gasps.

Alex stepped back, sword leveled at Kragthar's throat.

"Yield," he said. Flat and final.

Kragthar wheezed, eyes glassy with shock and pain, then slammed his palm against the sand, once, twice, three times.

Horn.

The stands detonated, deafening.

"Flamefist! Flamefist! Flamefist!"

Alex raised his sword high, blood-slick, soot-streaked, pointed straight at Mara in the stands. She leaped on her bench, staff aloft, screaming herself raw, green crystal blazing like a second heart. He held the point a heartbeat longer, letting the crowd see the promise, then turned and walked off the sand, leaving Kragthar kneeling in his ruin, ribs cracked, flesh seared, blood pooling beneath him in thick, dark puddles.

The announcer's voice cracked across the din like a whip.

"Slot B, semifinal match! Kaelith the Beastclaw versus… the Hooded One!"

No name. No flourish. Just that title, and the sudden, eerie hush that fell over half the stands before exploding again into confused, bloodthirsty cheering.

Kaelith stepped onto the sand alone.

She moved with the same lethal grace as before, greataxe resting on one shoulder, blood-iron short sword sheathed at her hip, wyvern leather torn and blood-crusted from earlier rounds. Fresh sweat matted her tawny fur; shallow claw-marks from Sablefang still wept red across her ribs and forearms. Her tail swayed once, slow, alert, amber eyes scanning the arena until they found Mara and Alex in the stands. Mara stood on her seat, staff raised high, screaming Kaelith's name with cracked, desperate fury. Alex stood beside her, Flamefist Gauntlet smoldering, jaw tight, eyes locked on his beastkin with a possessive intensity that burned hotter than any torch.

Kaelith's lips peeled back in a sharp, toothy grin, tail curling once in silent promise.

Then the opposite tunnel darkened.

A figure emerged, slow, deliberate, hooded and cloaked in midnight-black fabric that seemed to drink the torchlight rather than reflect it. No armor visible beneath the cloak; no weapon immediately apparent. The hood was deep, face completely shadowed except for the faint gleam of eyes like polished obsidian. The figure moved without sound, boots leaving no print in the sand, tail hidden beneath the cloak, posture unnaturally still. No flourish. No taunt. Just quiet, absolute menace.

The crowd's roar faltered, uncertain, then surged again, louder, hungrier.

The horn blared.

The Hooded One moved.

It was fast, too fast, crossing the ring in a blur of black cloth. No charge, no warning. One moment it stood still; the next it was inside Kaelith's guard, a gloved hand snapping forward like a striking snake.

Kaelith reacted on instinct, greataxe swinging in a wide, vicious arc meant to cleave torso from hip.

The figure ducked, fluid, boneless, slipped beneath the blade and drove an elbow into Kaelith's solar plexus. The impact was like being kicked by a horse, air exploded from her lungs in a sharp bark. She staggered, claws slashing blindly, caught only empty air.

The Hooded One pivoted, hand flashing again, this time a palm strike to Kaelith's throat. She twisted at the last second, took the blow on the collarbone instead, bone cracking audibly under the force. Pain lanced white-hot through her shoulder; her axe arm went numb, weapon slipping from suddenly weak fingers.

The crowd roared, confused, ecstatic.

Kaelith snarled, dropped to one knee, short sword flashing from her hip in a desperate upward slash.

The figure caught her wrist mid-motion, gloved fingers closing like iron manacles, twisted. Bone ground; tendons screamed. Kaelith howled, raw, animal, sword clattering to the sand. She lunged forward, claws raking, aimed for the shadowed face beneath the hood.

The Hooded One leaned back, just enough, then drove a knee into her ribs. The blow landed with surgical precision, cracking two ribs, driving splinters inward. Kaelith's scream cut off into a wet gasp as air refused to fill her lungs. Blood bubbled at her lips, bright, arterial.

She staggered, tail thrashing, claws slashing again, caught fabric this time, tore a long strip from the cloak.

The figure didn't flinch.

It stepped inside, hand snapping out, palm striking Kaelith's temple. The world tilted, vision doubling, then a second blow landed under her chin, snapping her head back, teeth clacking together hard enough to chip a fang. She tasted blood, her own, hot and thick.

The crowd was screaming, some chanting "Hooded! Hooded!" others howling Kaelith's name in desperate fury.

Kaelith lunged one last time, claws extended, aimed for the throat.

The figure caught both wrists, twisted, forced her arms behind her back in a brutal lock. Bone ground against bone; shoulders screamed in their sockets. Kaelith roared, voice breaking, then the figure drove a knee into her spine, once, twice, vertebrae popping like dry twigs.

She dropped, knees hitting sand, gasping, choking on blood and bile.

The Hooded One-stepped back, hood still hiding everything but those obsidian eyes, then raised one gloved hand.

Kaelith slammed her palm against the sand, once, twice, three times, weak, desperate, trembling.

Horn.

Silence, stunned, horrified, then the stands detonated in confusion and rage.

The Hooded One turned, cloak swirling, and walked off the sand without a word, leaving Kaelith crumpled in the center of the ring, chest heaving, ribs cracked, blood dripping from her muzzle in thick strings, one arm hanging useless, claws twitching weakly.

Mara's scream cut through the roar, raw, broken, staff clattering to the bench as she tried to climb over the railing.

Alex's face had gone white, then red, then black with fury. The Flamefist Gauntlet flared, ruby blazing like a dying star, flame licking up his arm in uncontrolled waves. He shoved through the crowd toward the tunnel, eyes locked on Kaelith's broken form, voice a low, lethal growl that carried even over the chaos.

"Who the fuck is that masked bastard?"

The Pit kept roaring, blood still wet on the sand.

But something had changed.

And Alex's rage was only beginning.
