Chapter 40 - Chapter 40:Frontline

Northern War Front — The Dragon Descends

The battlefield below was a vast stretch of scarred earth and shattered trees.

Hundreds of shinobi from Kumogakure marched in formation across the plains, their armor crackling faintly with lightning chakra.

Commanders barked orders.

Scouts leapt through the treetops.

Thunder rolled in the distance.

None of them noticed the shadow growing above them.

High in the clouds

Dreadbringer folded his wings.

Kyro stood balanced on the dragon's neck, cloak whipping violently in the rushing air as they plummeted toward the battlefield.

Wind roared past them like a hurricane.

Kyro's eyes glowed crimson.

"Right into the center."

The dragon rumbled with approval.

BOOOOM.

Dreadbringer smashed into the ground like a falling mountain.

The impact erased the center of the battalion, sending a shockwave across the battlefield that blasted dozens of shinobi off their feet.

Dust exploded into the air.

Cracks spread through the earth like spiderwebs.

For a moment

Silence.

Then a terrified scream.

"DRAGON!"

Panic erupted instantly.

Cloud shinobi scrambled into combat formations, lightning chakra sparking wildly across their weapons.

One commander roared:

"Kill it!"

Too late.

Dreadbringer's colossal head lifted slowly.

His chest expanded.

Then

CRIMSON FIRE.

A beam of burning draconic flame tore across the battlefield.

The ground melted.

Trees turned to ash.

Entire squads vanished in an instant.

Kyro leapt from the dragon's back mid-blast.

His body flickered.

Void Step.

He vanished.

Then reappeared inside the middle of a Cloud strike team.

Before they could react,

A flash of movement.

Three heads hit the ground.

Kyro stepped forward calmly as their bodies collapsed behind him.

Lightning spears flew toward him.

He vanished again.

Void Step.

Appeared behind another squad.

A draconic tail strike smashed through their formation like a battering ram.

Bones shattered.

Armor crumpled.

Kyro moved like a phantom through the battlefield.

Teleport.

Strike.

Teleport.

Kill.

Each movement perfectly controlled.

Above him, Dreadbringer swept across the battlefield like a living apocalypse. His wings alone created hurricanes that hurled shinobi through the air.

Lightning techniques slammed against his scales

And shattered harmlessly.

A Cloud jonin screamed as he launched a massive lightning jutsu.

"LIGHTNING RELEASE — THUNDER BREAKER!"

The bolt slammed into Dreadbringer's chest.

The dragon barely noticed.

His massive claw came down.

The jonin disappeared beneath it.

Kyro appeared again atop a shattered boulder.

He looked across the battlefield.

Bodies.

Fire.

Chaos.

His voice echoed coldly.

"…Too easy."

A surviving Cloud captain charged him in desperation.

"Monster!"

Kyro didn't even move.

Void Step.

He appeared behind the captain.

A single claw swipe.

The man collapsed.

The battlefield slowly went quiet.

Smoke drifted across the plains.

Hundreds of Cloud shinobi lay defeated.

Dreadbringer landed heavily beside Kyro, folding his wings slowly.

The dragon exhaled smoke.

"Finished."

Kyro nodded slightly.

"Yeah."

Far away from the battlefield, hidden within a dense forest ridge

Masked figures watched silently.

Agents of Root.

At least twelve of them.

Not one had moved during the entire massacre.

One agent lowered a specialized chakra-sensing device.

"…Report."

Another operative spoke quietly.

"Target confirmed."

He glanced back toward the devastated battlefield.

"Subject Kyro."

A third agent added:

"Dragon entity confirmed as well. Designation: unknown summon or bonded creature."

Another operative finished writing notes.

"Combat analysis: Subject possesses teleportation technique beyond standard shinobi movement."

"Estimated speed exceeds elite jonin."

"Dragon durability extremely high."

A pause.

Then the squad leader spoke.

"…Weaknesses?"

Silence.

Finally one agent answered.

"Unknown."

Another added.

"However… the subject avoided prolonged combat."

The squad leader nodded.

"Meaning?"

"Possible stamina conservation… or protecting something."

They had also noticed something else.

Before the battle

There had been another presence.

A faint magical energy signature.

But it vanished.

The Root leader looked toward Kyro again.

He stood calmly beside the dragon like a king surveying his conquered battlefield.

"…Continue observation."

He slowly unsheathed a small sealing scroll.

"The capture operation begins soon."

Back On The Battlefield

Kyro crouched beside a fallen Cloud shinobi.

He wiped blood from his claws.

Dreadbringer shifted behind him.

"More coming."

Kyro smirked.

"I figured."

In the distance

More chakra signatures were approaching.

Reinforcements.

Possibly entire battalions.

Kyro stood slowly.

His body shimmered as faint dragon scales appeared along his arms.

His eyes glowed brighter.

"Good."

The dragon's wings slowly expanded again.

Kyro looked toward the horizon.

"Let's see how many they send."

Above them

Storm clouds gathered.

And far away, unseen by Kyro

The hidden eyes of Danzō Shimura had finally found their target.

The ruined battlefield still smoked from the devastation.

Cratered earth.

Melted stone.

Hundreds of fallen shinobi from Kumogakure scattered across the plain.

At the center stood Kyro beside the towering form of Dreadbringer.

The dragon's wings shifted slowly as his burning eyes scanned the horizon.

Then

Kyro's head tilted slightly.

"…Visitors."

Dozens of chakra signatures were approaching fast.

A Leaf squad landed along the edge of the devastated battlefield.

At the front stood Minato Namikaze.

The wind carried the scent of ash and burning earth.

Minato's blue eyes widened slightly as he stepped forward.

"…What happened here?"

One of the Leaf shinobi whispered in disbelief.

"This… this looks like a tailed beast attack."

Minato didn't answer.

His eyes were locked on the sky.

Because rising above the battlefield

Was something enormous.

Dreadbringer slowly spread his colossal wings.

The dragon's silhouette eclipsed the clouds.

A living mountain of black-red scales.

Minato's expression shifted from calm curiosity…

To stunned realization.

"…That's not a summon."

The ground beneath them trembled as the dragon exhaled smoke.

And standing calmly on the battlefield below

Was Kyro.

Kyro suddenly moved.

His instincts screamed.

Void Step.

His body vanished

Just as a massive bolt of lightning tore through the air where he had been standing.

BOOOOM.

The ground exploded.

Kyro reappeared high in the sky above the battlefield.

But the attack hadn't stopped.

Several elite Cloud shinobi appeared around him mid-air.

Silent.

Fast.

One of them thrust a lightning spear forward.

Kyro twisted in mid-air

But the spear grazed his shoulder.

CRACK.

Electricity surged through his body.

His muscles spasmed briefly.

"…Tch."

Another elite jonin appeared behind him.

A kick aimed straight for his spine.

Kyro teleported again

But the timing was slightly off from the stun.

The kick barely clipped him, knocking him off balance.

Lightning techniques flashed from every direction.

The Cloud elites were coordinated perfectly.

They had trained specifically to fight monsters.

Kyro's eyes narrowed.

"Not bad."

Then

Something huge appeared behind him.

Too fast.

Too powerful.

Kyro barely turned before

BOOOOM.

A massive fist slammed into his stomach.

The impact sounded like a cannon blast.

The air exploded outward as Kyro was launched backward through the sky.

He crashed into the ground hundreds of meters away.

Dust erupted into the air.

The battlefield shook.

Forest Ridge...

Minato's eyes widened as he saw the strike.

"…That punch…"

He already knew who it was.

A towering figure stepped forward from the smoke.

Skin dark and hardened like steel.

Massive muscular frame.

Lightning chakra coating his body like living armor.

The strongest shinobi of the Cloud Village.

A.

The Raikage cracked his knuckles slowly.

Lightning surged around him.

His voice boomed across the battlefield.

"So."

His eyes locked onto the crater where Kyro had landed.

"You're the dragon brat causing all this trouble."

The elite Cloud jonin gathered behind their leader.

Perfect formation.

Perfect discipline.

Above them

Dreadbringer's massive head slowly turned.

The dragon's pupils narrowed.

A deep rumble shook the clouds.

Even the Raikage looked up briefly.

Then smiled.

"…Good."

His lightning aura intensified.

"I was hoping for a real fight."

Dust slowly settled.

Kyro knelt in the center of the crater.

One hand pressed against the ground.

His stomach throbbed where the punch had landed.

He coughed once.

"…Okay."

He stood slowly.

Crimson scales began spreading across his skin.

His eyes burned like molten metal.

He looked directly at A.

"…That one actually hurt."

Above him

Dreadbringer roared.

The sound shook the entire battlefield.

Kyro rolled his shoulders.

Then cracked his neck.

"…Now I'm interested."

Forest Ridge

Minato watched everything carefully.

His analytical mind was already racing.

The dragon.

The mysterious shinobi controlling it.

And now

The Third Raikage himself.

Minato whispered quietly.

"…This battle is going to change the war."
