Chapter 98 - Reinforcement forces

Akatsuki Wins Three Times in a Row — Konoha Loses Completely

"Maybe…

they really are preparing military supplies…"

"After all, Konoha has so many shinobi. If they mobilize an army, the daily logistics alone—food, mounts, equipment—would be enormous.

I guess… that's understandable?"

Faced with Uchiha Makoto deliberately steering the conversation in this direction, Uzumaki Shinji froze for a moment. Then he awkwardly tried to come up with one or two explanations that barely sounded reasonable.

Makoto merely smiled and said nothing.

He just looked quietly at Shinji.

In the end, Shinji couldn't take it anymore and let out an embarrassed laugh.

It had already been over a month since the war began.

Soon, it would be two months.

Shinobi villages were, by nature, military organizations—built for war.

No matter how slow Konoha's response might be, it should have been more than enough time to assemble at least some reinforcement forces to support Akatsuki and the Uzumaki clan at the front.

Even if everything Konoha said were true—if they really were "urgently preparing supplies"—there was no excuse for failing to dispatch even a single emergency jōnin squad.

And yet, to this day—

Not even the shadow of a Konoha shinobi had appeared on the battlefield.

"Hmph. You're right, Shinji," Makoto said coldly.

"Konoha's reinforcements are probably still 'in preparation.' After all, Akatsuki and Konoha are allies."

"It's just that… their rescue speed is a little slow."

"Good thing Akatsuki is strong enough to win this war on its own."

He paused, then added casually—

"I only hope that if the Uzumaki clan ever finds itself in sudden danger, Konoha's response won't be this… sluggish."

He finished speaking and calmly returned to eating his ice cream.

Vanilla really was excellent.

Shinji fell silent.

He kept eating as well—one spoonful after another.

The sweetness was still there, but somehow, a bitter taste welled up in his chest.

Makoto's words had struck home.

Konoha was Akatsuki's ally.

And also the Uzumaki clan's ally.

In terms of blood ties, Makoto was an Uchiha, while the Uzumaki were the Senju's sworn kin.

On paper, everyone stood on equal footing.

But if Konoha treated Akatsuki this way today—

What about the Uzumaki clan tomorrow?

Would it be the same response?

An ally in trouble—yet unmoving as a mountain?

That thought was… chilling.

After finishing his ice cream, Makoto didn't linger.

He left Shinji standing there alone.

As commander of the Akatsuki–Uzumaki coalition, Makoto's daily responsibilities were overwhelming. Next, he needed to visit the wounded.

After that, he still had to plan counteroffensives and—most importantly—review the security of Akatsuki's logistics supply lines.

That last point was critical.

Everyone knew this simple truth:

Wars are fought with money and provisions.

A supply line was the army's lifeline.

In Naruto canon history, the turning point of the Third Shinobi World War was the Kannabi Bridge mission—when Konoha destroyed Iwagakure's logistics route, forcing Iwa to retreat.

Makoto understood this better than anyone.

That was why, before this war even began, he had already laid out:

Three hidden standard supply routes

Two emergency-only secret supply lines

Both Akatsuki and Kumogakure understood the importance of logistics.

But with Kumogakure already suffering supply shortages, their only option was to try and sever Akatsuki's lines—

And so far, they had failed.

At most, they occasionally intercepted minor shipments—enough to improve a single raiding squad's meals for a day.

On the scale of the war, it was meaningless.

"Lord Hikage…"

The moment Makoto stepped into the medical tent, all eyes turned toward him.

Injured shinobi who could still move gathered around, their gazes filled with reverence.

War was the fastest way to accumulate prestige.

The achievement of annihilating over a thousand enemy shinobi in a single night earned Makoto more authority than any amount of direct monetary rewards ever could.

As long as Akatsuki won this war and returned in triumph, Makoto's position within the village would be unshakable.

No one would dare oppose his decisions again.

"Sit. All of you."

Makoto smiled warmly.

No matter how busy he was, he always made time to visit the wounded.

A few words of concern were enough to harvest loyalty.

An incredibly profitable exchange.

"How are the new medical-nin?"

"Are the healing medicines effective?"

"Lord Hikage," a chūnin who had been injured three times and somehow survived them all replied,

"They were a little inexperienced at first, but they adapted quickly. They're excellent."

"And the medicines… every time I use them—"

"That's good. Very good."

Makoto nodded in satisfaction.

The surrounding wounded shinobi agreed wholeheartedly.

In every shinobi village, inadequate medical care—delayed treatment, medicine shortages, too few medical-nin—had always led to unnecessary deaths and lifelong disabilities.

The six hundred Cloud shinobi officially listed as killed were only battlefield fatalities.

Those who later died of complications, were crippled, or abandoned the shinobi profession entirely—

Those numbers would push Kumogakure's losses far higher.

Akatsuki avoided this fate only because Makoto had spent vast sums in advance to establish a medical training system, cultivate medical-nin, and import high-quality medicines.

That investment was now paying for itself.

"This war," Makoto declared,

"we will win it."

"No village can harm our shinobi and walk away unscathed."

"When this war ends, every shinobi in the world will think twice—no, three times—before provoking Akatsuki."

"You stand behind a powerful village."

"So live. Return home alive. Witness it with your own eyes."

"Your merits and your scars will earn you Akatsuki's glory."

It was an impromptu speech.

A vision of victory.

Of elevated status.

Of a future where Akatsuki shinobi stood above the rest of the shinobi world.

Many outside observers found the war baffling—

All this, just for two chūnin?

To them, the only explanation was this:

Uchiha Makoto was fiercely protective, utterly unreasonable, and willing to pay any price for revenge.

Never provoke the Uchiha. Never provoke Akatsuki.

And beyond honor—

There was money.

Clear, transparent compensation rules.

Battle pay.

Injury compensation.

Makoto's generosity needed no explanation.

Greatness needed no explanation.

"Loyalty!!"

The roar shook the air.

Makoto left the medical tent smiling faintly, even humming to himself.

Back in his command tent, he reviewed reports, issued orders, and relayed instructions through messengers.

Then—

"Meow~"

A ninja cat leapt onto his desk.

Makoto stroked it, listened to its purring, fed it catnip, and finally retrieved the sealed scroll from its collar.

Uchiha Setsuna had written again.

After receiving Makoto's earlier message, Setsuna had:

Publicly spread news of Akatsuki's victories throughout Konoha

Pressured Senju Tobirama in the name of the Uchiha clan, demanding immediate military aid

Yet even though Konoha's forces were essentially ready—

They still refused to move.

Furious, Setsuna personally confronted Tobirama in the Hokage's office.

"Senju Tobirama! Akatsuki is our ally!"

"They were attacked by Kumogakure and forced to retaliate!"

"Konoha must send troops immediately! Why are we still doing nothing?!"

Tobirama's response was cold and official.

"Preparations are insufficient. The timing is not right."

"I was appointed Supreme Commander by the Hokage himself—not you."

"Konoha's safety and the peace of the shinobi world rest on me."

"When I say we move, we move."

Setsuna hit a wall.

He turned to Uchiha Madara.

Madara prepared to confront Tobirama himself—

Only to find that Senju Hashirama was now sitting in the Hokage's office.

After all that—

Konoha still showed no intention of deploying.

"Tobirama… that sinister old ghost."

Makoto finished reading the first half of the letter.

None of this surprised him.

If Konoha had sent troops immediately, that would have been suspicious.

What did concern him was one detail—

Tobirama had taken personal command of Konoha's forces.

That meant he was waiting.

Waiting to harvest the outcome at a critical moment.

"Konoha really is powerful enough… to sit back and watch tigers fight."

Makoto sighed softly.

All he could do now was adapt as events unfolded.

Only the strong were allowed true strategic patience.

As long as Hashirama lived, no village dared provoke Konoha.

But Akatsuki was different.

Makoto needed this founding war.

Money alone created shallow authority.

Only victory in war forged unshakable prestige.

This war would:

Cement his authority internally

Purge opposition

Stimulate Akatsuki's economy

Attract noble and merchant investment

Establish Akatsuki's standing in the shinobi world

And deepen bonds with the Uzumaki clan.

After all—

No relationship was closer than comrades who had thrown explosive tags together in the same trench.

This war was inevitable.

Better sooner than later.

At least now, there were still people who could stop things from spiraling out of control.

If either Hashirama or Madara stepped in, the war could end instantly.

Once they were gone?

Such a "controllable" war would never happen again.

Makoto steadied his emotions and continued reading.

The latter half of the letter made him smile.

Within Konoha, Akatsuki's reputation—and Makoto's—was soaring.

After repeatedly hitting dead ends through official channels, Setsuna changed tactics.

Using Uchiha influence, stories of Makoto spread rapidly among Konoha's civilians.

Meanwhile, Kazuma—stationed in Akatsuki—had already received Makoto's instructions.

The two sides never contacted each other.

Yet they moved in perfect sync.

Soon, enthusiastic "Konoha civilians" began creating rhymes and sayings:

"Allies attack—unmoving as a mountain.

Allies falter—retreat swift as wind.

When the battle favors us—advance like fire.

When unclear—stand like forest."

"Akatsuki fought for fallen chūnin—this is Benevolence. First victory."

"Akatsuki sought negotiation before war—this is Righteousness. Second victory."

"Akatsuki annihilated over a thousand Cloud shinobi—this is Bravery. Third victory."

"Under Lord Hikage, Akatsuki embodies Benevolence, Righteousness, and Bravery—

and has defeated Konoha three times in this affair."

"As for Konoha's response so far…

Well. You judge for yourselves."
