Cherreads

Chapter 70 - When Monsters Awaken.

Ash and dust drifted upward in slow spirals, illuminated by faint traces of red energy that flickered like dying embers. For a brief moment, the battlefield fell into an eerie stillness like the world itself was waiting.

Riven's grip tightened around his twin blades.

Something was wrong.

He could feel it.

Not just power…

But instability.

Kael stood at the center of the crater.

Unmoving.

Head lowered.

His body trembled.

At first, it was subtle small, irregular spasms running through his arms and shoulders. But then it spread. His entire frame began to shake violently, like something inside him was clawing its way out.

The red aura around him flickered then surged.

Once.

Twice.

Then

BOOOOOOM!!!

A violent explosion of dark, blood-red energy erupted outward, blasting away the remaining dust and debris in a massive wave.

Riven felt it hit his chest like a hammer.

His instincts screamed.

"Something's changing…" he muttered.

Astra's eyes narrowed sharply.

"No…" she whispered. "He's losing it"

Kael screamed.

It wasn't human anymore.

It was raw.

Animalistic.

Broken.

His back arched violently as a sickening series of cracks echoed through the battlefield. Bones shifted unnaturally beneath his skin. Muscles swelled, expanding beyond their natural limits.

Then

They burst through.

SHKKK !

Bone spikes tore through his shoulders first long, jagged protrusions ripping through flesh and armor alike. Blood sprayed outward, only to be instantly consumed by the dark energy surrounding him.

Another crack

His spine distorted, pushing outward as a row of brutal spikes erupted along his back, each one uneven, sharp, and pulsing with energy.

Riven's eyes widened.

"…What the hell…"

Kael's arms twisted next.

His elbows split open as curved bone spikes forced their way out, extending like natural blades. His knuckles followed thick, jagged protrusions forming over his fists, turning every strike into something far more lethal.

Then

His jaw.

CRACK !

It split wider than humanly possible, bone extending outward into serrated edges, teeth elongating into something closer to fangs of a beast. His face distorted, losing the last traces of humanity.

And still

He grew.

His body expanded, muscles bulking unnaturally, frame stretching upward until he stood far larger than before closer to a towering, monstrous figure than a man.

The red aura exploded outward again.

Uncontrolled.

Violent.

Unstable.

Kael lifted his head.

His eyes…

Were gone.

Not literally but whatever consciousness had once been there was no longer present.

Only madness remained.

Only hunger.

Only destruction.

A guttural growl escaped his throat, vibrating through the air like distant thunder.

He wasn't Kael anymore.

He was something else.

Something broken.

Something unleashed.

Riven felt his heart slam against his chest.

"That's… not a transformation…"

Astra's grip tightened on her staff.

"No," she said grimly. "That's collapse."

Eryx watched silently.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Just understanding.

"…So that's your end," he said quietly.

Kael no, the thing that used to be Kael responded with a deafening roar.

The ground beneath him shattered as he launched forward.

Eryx exhaled.

Slowly.

Then reached up

And removed his coat.

The fabric fell to the ground behind him, settling gently against the broken earth.

For the first time

Riven saw it clearly.

Eryx's body shifted not violently, not uncontrollably but deliberately.

Energy gathered at his core.

Golden light pulsed outward once…

Twice…

Then surged.

The transformation began.

Not chaotic like Kael's

Not broken.

But perfect.

His frame expanded, muscles reshaping with precision. Bones shifted smoothly, reforming into something greater without tearing or distortion.

Silver fur spread rapidly across his body, gleaming under the fractured moonlight. His limbs elongated, becoming more powerful, more defined.

His face extended into a wolf's snout, sharp and regal, eyes glowing with controlled golden intensity.

When it finished

He stood at nearly 10 feet tall.

A massive, silver-furred werewolf.

Golden aura flowing around him like a living crown.

Riven's breath caught.

"…That's… power…"

Not just strength.

Not just transformation.

That was perfection of form.

Every part of Eryx radiated control.

Every movement carried weight.

Even standing still he dominated the battlefield.

The two titans faced each other.

One

A being consumed by forbidden power.

The other

A warrior who had mastered his own

Then

They moved.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

The collision shattered the ground beneath them instantly.

Claws met claws.

Bone spikes clashed against reinforced muscle and aura.

The impact alone sent a shockwave tearing through what remained of the forest, flattening everything in its path.

Riven was forced even lower, claws digging deeper as the wind howled violently around him.

Above

The battle had changed.

It was no longer a duel.

It was brutality.

Raw.

Relentless.

Savage.

Kael struck wildly, his massive frame swinging with devastating force. Each swipe of his claws carved through the air with enough power to split stone. His bone spikes added an extra layer of danger every movement was lethal, every strike unpredictable.

Eryx met him head-on.

Not retreating.

Not yielding.

He countered each attack with precision blocking, deflecting, striking back with calculated force. His claws tore through Kael's defenses, his movements sharp and efficient even in this monstrous form.

A swipe

Blocked.

A bite

Dodged.

A counter

CRACK!

Eryx's claw raked across Kael's torso, tearing through flesh and sending dark energy scattering into the air.

Kael didn't flinch.

Didn't slow.

He roared and retaliated immediately, slamming both arms down with crushing force.

BOOM!

The ground collapsed beneath them.

Riven watched completely locked in.

Every movement.

Every strike.

Every decision.

He wasn't just seeing it anymore.

He was studying it.

"They're not just fighting…" he muttered.

Astra nodded slightly, still braced against the force.

"They're testing dominance. Control versus chaos."

Eryx moved again faster now.

Even in his massive form, his speed hadn't diminished. If anything it had increased.

He slipped past Kael's next strike, driving his shoulder forward and slamming into Kael's chest with devastating force.

The impact sent Kael skidding backward, tearing a trench through the earth.

But Kael surged forward again instantly.

No hesitation.

No thought.

Only instinct.

They clashed again.

And again.

And again.

Each impact stronger than the last.

Each collision shaking the battlefield like a natural disaster.

Riven's eyes burned.

He could feel it now.

The difference.

The gap.

Not just in power

But in control.

Kael had more raw energy.

That much was clear. His attacks carried overwhelming force, enough to destroy anything in their path.

But Eryx

Used less.

And did more.

Every strike landed with purpose. Every movement conserved energy. Every action built toward something greater.

"That's it…" Riven whispered.

A realization forming.

"I don't need more power…"

"I need better control…"

Above

Eryx drove Kael back once more, golden aura flaring brighter as he pressed forward relentlessly.

Kael roared, swinging wildly, his attacks becoming more erratic, more unstable.

The more power he used

The more he lost himself.

And Riven saw it

Clearly now.

This wasn't just a fight.

It was a lesson.

A warning.

A path.

And he burned every second of it into his mind.

Because one day

He wouldn't just be watching.

He'd be standing there himself.
