The following morning, Chiya walked alone toward Konoha's orphanage.
A gentle breeze drifted past, carrying a touch of coolness.
From a distance, the outline of the orphanage gradually came into view.
Unlike the run-down little building he remembered, the orphanage had been renovated. The outer walls had been painted a warm cream color, the windows wiped until they shone, and a few small trees had been planted in the yard, giving the whole place a lively, living feel.
The sound of children laughing floated out from inside, bright and clear.
He had just reached the front gate when a slightly older woman came out to meet him.
She wore a plain gray kimono, her hair neatly pinned back, a kind smile on her face.
"Sir, if I may ask, you are."
The woman asked respectfully, her gaze moving over Chiya as if he looked somewhat familiar.
"I am Uchiha Chiya. I am here to see your director, Yakushi Nono."
The woman's eyes flashed with surprise the moment she heard the name.
The Uchiha Clan Head, and he actually knew the new director?
Thinking back on the support the Uchiha had been sending to the orphanage, the money and supplies, she understood immediately.
She bowed her head with even greater respect.
"Please wait a moment. I will go and let the director know."
"No need."
Chiya waved a hand.
"Just take me there directly."
The woman understood and stepped aside to clear the way.
"Please follow me."
Chiya followed her into the orphanage, passing through a freshly painted corridor.
A faint smell of paint still lingered in the air, mingled with the sound of children's laughter, giving the place a warm and welcoming feel.
The walls on either side of the corridor were hung with drawings done by the children, full of color and childhood imagination.
"The director had all of these done together with the children after she arrived."
The woman noticed where Chiya was looking and spoke as they walked, pride clear in her tone.
"The director said that children need ways to express their feelings, and drawing is a good one."
Chiya gave a slight nod, his gaze passing over the drawings. He silently acknowledged just how thoughtful Nono had been.
Before long, the woman stopped in front of a door with a small sign that read "Director's Office."
She gave a light knock. Nono's gentle voice came from inside.
"Come in."
The woman pushed the door open and said respectfully.
"Director, the Uchiha Clan Head is here."
Yakushi Nono was bent over her desk, a pen in hand, apparently writing something.
At the woman's words she paused, then looked up, her gaze going straight to Chiya.
The woman, reading the room, quietly excused herself and pulled the door shut behind her.
Nono's golden hair still fell softly over her shoulders, but there was a noticeable weariness on her face. Even so, a look of quiet satisfaction never quite left the corners of her eyes.
The moment she saw Chiya, a flash of surprise and delight crossed her face, and the pen slipped from her fingers and landed on the desk with a small clatter.
"Chiya!"
Almost on instinct she rose, walked quickly around the desk, and threw herself into his arms.
Chiya opened his arms and held her steady, feeling the warmth of her, and something softened in his chest.
He gently stroked her back and said quietly.
"Missed me?"
Nono nodded against his chest, her voice muffled.
"Yes. Very much."
Chiya held her and let his gaze rest on her desk.
The surface was covered in documents. Children's files, supply lists, repair plans. Every one of them neatly organized, but the sheer volume of them was enough to feel the weight of the work.
"Busy lately?"
Chiya asked softly, his fingers gently combing through her golden hair.
Nono lifted her head from his chest, tired eyes unable to hide the excitement behind them.
"Busy, but happy. Chiya, I have so much I want to tell you."
Chiya smiled and guided her to the small sofa to one side.
"No rush. Take your time."
Nono sat beside him, both hands holding tightly onto his, as if she was afraid he might disappear.
She drew a deep breath and began to talk, the words flowing freely.
"The first thing I did when I took over was renovate the building. The old roof leaked whenever it rained, the walls were cracked, and the children were always catching colds in the winter. It is much better now. All the rooms have been repainted, and new heating has been installed."
"I also got in touch with Konoha's hospital. Lady Tsunade agreed to have people come by regularly to do checkups for the children. Before, when a child here got sick, they just had to tough it out. Now that there is proper medical support, their health has improved a great deal."
"I also adjusted the children's diet. The food before was plain and lacking in nutrition. Now I have an arrangement with the farmers in the village to supply fresh vegetables and fruit every day. Look, aren't the children much more energetic than before?"
She grew more and more animated as she spoke, her eyes shining, as if she had no end of things to say.
Chiya listened in silence, his gaze staying soft on her face the whole time.
He could feel her love for this work, and the care she had put into every child here.
"What else?"
He said quietly, encouraging her to continue.
"I also set up classes. General education and basic ninja fundamentals. Those who show good aptitude will be sent to the ninja academy, and may become ninja someday. Even for those who probably never will, having some basic knowledge gives them more options when they grow up. I also brought in craftspeople from the village to teach them carpentry, sewing. I want them to have a skill to rely on when they are older."
When she finished, Nono looked at Chiya, her eyes full of gratitude.
"Chiya, thank you. If it were not for you, I might never have been able to make this dream real."
Chiya shook his head and reached up to cup her cheek.
"This is your own effort. I only gave you a push."
Nono's face flushed slightly. She lowered her head and said softly.
"But without you, I would not have even had the chance to be pushed."
Chiya looked at her shy expression, felt something stir inside him, and could not help pulling her into his arms and holding her close.
He could feel that her body was thinner than before, her waist more slender than he remembered. Clearly the toll of these busy weeks.
He let out a quiet sigh, pained by it, but did not say a word to ask her to ease up.
Because he knew that the orphanage was not simply a job to her. It was something closer to salvation.
"You have gotten thinner."
He said in a low voice, his fingers gently tracing her back.
Nono leaned against his shoulder and said nothing more.
The two stayed like that for a while, quietly close, enjoying the rare warmth of the moment.
After a little while, Nono suddenly lifted her head, a glint of playfulness in her eyes.
"Chiya, what made you come by today out of the blue?"
Chiya raised an eyebrow and put on a serious face.
"The Uchiha Clan lent this place a great deal of money. It is only natural that I come and check on things, is it not?"
Nono pouted.
"Really? Just checking?"
Chiya looked at her adorable expression and finally let out a laugh.
He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, his voice quiet.
"Of course I missed you. Otherwise why would I come running here first thing in the morning?"
Nono's face bloomed into a brilliant smile, her eyes full of happiness.
She leaned close to Chiya and whispered by his ear.
"I missed you too. Every single day."
Chiya felt his chest heat at her words.
A few days apart had felt like seasons.
The two of them were at a point where they were deeply drawn to each other, and Chiya was just thinking about making a further move when a rush of footsteps suddenly came from outside the door, followed immediately by the cheerful noise of children.
"Director! Director! Do you have time to look at the drawing I made?"
A small boy's voice rang out at the door.
Nono quickly pulled herself out of Chiya's arms, straightened her clothes, a charming flush still warm on her face.
"Chiya, I am sorry!"
Chiya shook his head to show he did not mind.
She let out a breath and cleared her throat, then said gently.
"Come in."
The door was pushed open and a small boy of five or six came running in excitedly, holding a sheet of paper above his head.
He spotted Chiya, froze for a moment, then shyly hid himself behind Nono.
"Kenta, what is it?"
Nono crouched down and asked him warmly.
The little boy peeked his head out timidly and held the paper out to her.
"Director, this is something I drew. It is for you."
Nono took the paper. On it, drawn in the unsteady strokes of a small child, were three figures.
A golden-haired woman stood in the middle, a boy and a girl on either side of her, all holding hands, all smiling.
"This is."
Nono looked puzzled.
The little boy pointed to the golden-haired woman in the drawing.
"That is the director!"
Then he pointed to the two children beside her.
"We are family!"
At the word family, Nono's eyes went red in an instant.
She placed a hand on the little boy's head, full of gentle warmth.
"Thank you, Kenta. This is the best gift I have ever received."
Chiya stood to the side and watched.
He stepped forward, crouched down, and held his hand out to the boy.
"That is a wonderful drawing. Can you tell me your name?"
The little boy looked at Chiya, then looked at Nono. When she gave a nod, he said quietly.
"My name is Kenta."
"Kenta."
Kenta blinked, then suddenly asked.
"Are you the director's boyfriend?"
Chiya paused, then smiled.
"How did you know?"
Kenta answered with complete seriousness.
"Because the director kept sneaking looks at you, and every time she did she was smiling really happily."
Nono's face went red all the way to her ears. She gave Kenta's cheek a gentle pinch.
"You little troublemaker. Do not go saying things like that."
Kenta giggled, wriggled free of her hand, and ran for the door, calling out as he went.
"The director is embarrassed!"
Nono shook her head helplessly, stood up, and looked at Chiya with shy sweetness in her eyes.
Chiya reached out and pulled her back into his arms.
"Nono, you are doing wonderfully. Even better than I had imagined. The children here need you."
Nono looked up into his deep eyes, something stirring in her heart. She could not help rising onto her toes and pressing a soft kiss to his lips.
"Thank you for your support all this time, my Lord Chiya."
Chiya wrapped an arm around her waist.
"Just words of support are not enough to convince me. If you really want to show gratitude, you had better perform well tonight."
At those words, Yakushi Nono let out an indignant sound.
"Fine, fine! Once I finish up here this afternoon, I will go home early and cook something good for you to come over to. And I."
Nono paused, a bashful warmth spreading across her face.
Her voice dropped lower.
"I will perform well!"
"Oh?"
Chiya's eyes lit up.
"Then I will very much look forward to that."
Sunlight streamed through the window and fell across the two of them, as if the moment had been touched with gold.
Outside the door, the sound of children's laughter went on and on.
And in this small director's office, two hearts rested close together, warm and still.
