Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Female Lead

Vanya Dexter's P.O.V.

In another part of town, a woman who was believed to be dead moved.

*Gasp*

'I'm alive. I made it out alive? What about my team?'

I scanned my surroundings. This place looked unfamiliar. I do not recall which planet had an environment like this. The last thing I remember, our ship was under attack while on our way to the 8th planet. We were to escort the Zerg commander to the interstellar prison with maximum security. Who knew that the zergs army were waiting for us.

'Ship, where is my ship?'

That's when a horrible headache hit me, images were flickering extremely fast. Memories that did not belong to me. What the hell was going on? It seems that I was reborn. Looks like I was born in an alternate universe where the blue planet was still thriving. In my timeline, the blue planet faced a deadly catastrophe, earthlings had to evacuate the planet and migrate to the red planet. All possible forms of life faded with time on the blue planet. Turning it into a garbage collecting planet. Only the poor or small time criminals were sent to live on the blue planet.

"Astrid, scan my perimeter and let me know of any signs of life"

'Scanning initiated, signs of life are approximately 800 meters from here.'

"Astrid, do you know what happened to my team?"

'Host, your team did not make it. In order to save you I had to initiate emergency protocol. Host, this was the only body compatible with your soul. It has the same name, birthday and physical appearance. The previous occupant died 5 minutes prior to our arrival. During the bonding process, I felt another soul tried to attach itself to this body. I had to use up the remaining energy to fight for you. With my energy depleted, aside from the storage function, all other functions have been locked.'

My team was dead? All of them? How could they all die and I, their captain, survive. Most of them were parents, siblings, sons/daughters. They should have survived. They should have lived! Those damn Zergs!

If I had died alone, that would have been fine. I had no one waiting for me. My parents died during the great war against the Zergs. I was an only child. I did have an aunt but she was not much of an aunt. She left me to fend for myself while she spent my parents' compensation on her children and herself. She only made sure to pay for my education.

I was spiraling, I knew it. I needed to control myself. I took a deep breath and finished accepting all the memories. What a tragic life. Her name, like mine, was Vanya. Vanya Dexter. She was 24 years old. She had died while running away from her assailant. She was about to be humiliated by three men when a cat ran by scaring the men. That brief moment of fear gave her an opportunity to escape. She kicked the man who was holding her on his knee and pushed with all her strength.

As she was running, she didn't noticed that a car was coming towards her. She was hit and fell down the ditch. The driver sped off. He or She did not bother to check if she was alive. Poor girl.

Once all the images stopped I decided to stand up. I was a bit dizzy due to the impact but I could still manage.

"Astrid, do I have anything that can help with these injuries?"

Host, you have LS-005 available in the storage box. it should heal any physical injuries caused to the body, however it will not be enough for internal injuries. The lab is currently locked, I am unable to retrieve any further medicine.

The LS-005 was a small medicine during one of my missions. I was tired of constantly getting injured and having to lay in the healing pods. My medicine worked 2x faster than the healing pods, but it was only for external injuries. Luckily, I was smart enough to store some in my storage and not leave everything in the lab.

"Okay, give me the medicine. It'll have to do."

A small capsule full of clear liquid appeared in my palm. I took it and felt the burning sensation all over my body as the healing process began. After a few seconds of healing, I stood up and felt much better. I could walk straight now. Going based on the previous soul's memories, I soon found my way out of the road and into the city. I managed to get to her apartment when a boy opened the door.

"V, you're finally back! I was so worried. I called the police and tried to file a missing person report, but you have to be missing for more than 24 hours in order for them to take it serious. That's so stupid! What if something happened to you within those 24 hours. Who would bring you back if something happened to you?"

Based on my memories, this boy is named Harold. He is this body's biological cousin. Both their parents died in the same plane crash over a year ago. They have been living together and looking out for each other. Harold is 20 years old this year.

"I'm fine, I just had a bit of trouble. Step aside, it's freezing out here. Let me in."

"V, why is your shirt torn? Did something happen? Did you call the police?" he said as he stepped aside.

I walked in and scanned my surroundings. A habit I developed with the many years of training in the interstellar army.

"No need to alert the police, it was nothing serious. I'm going to go take a hot shower." I mean how could I alert the police? I didn't know who killed the original host. What if they started asking question about why I had no injuries? Who would believe me?

"I'm going to cook, you look like you haven't had dinner yet." he said with a sheepish smile.

I walked into her bedroom and grabbed something to change in to. Walked towards the bathroom and showered. As I walked out of the bathroom an aroma hit me. It smelled so good. I felt like I was hallucinating. I walked towards the scent and saw Harold placing dishes on the dining table.

"Oh good, your out. Come and eat. I made a simple dish."

I was confused for a moment, then it hit me. Earthlings eat actual food. Forgive my ignorance, in my world we eat nutrient drinks that sustain us. Solid food is a luxury that most can't afford. I had been lucky enough to eat solid food once during a banquet.

I sat at the dining table with Harold and watched him as he grabbed a pointy object. He stabbed it towards what looked like flesh and ate with much gusto.

I grabbed the same object and tried to recollect through memory of what this item was. It was called a knife? no, that's not right. That's what the miniature sword is called. Fork... right. That's what this is called. A fork. What a strange name.

I took a small piece of the meat and I could swear I saw stars. This was delicious. Nothing like the solid food in my world. This actually had a great flavor. I couldn't stop eating. I felt like a black hole. I looked up and saw Harold with wide eyes.

"Sis, I know you must be hungry....but breath first."

I started coughing. Was this kid teasing me?
