Seasoned With Love
Season 4 – Episode 7: "Lines You Don't Cross"
Amara's POV
The announcement came at noon.
Marcus was the one who saw it first.
He burst through the kitchen doors holding his phone like it was on fire.
"WE HAVE A PROBLEM."
Rose didn't even look up.
"You always have a problem."
Marcus pointed at the screen.
"No, this is a real problem."
Carl walked over.
"What is it?"
Marcus turned the phone toward them.
A headline filled the screen:
"Hale Urban Developments Announces New Flagship Restaurant — Opening Across from Rising Local Favorite."
Rose froze.
"…you've got to be kidding me."
Carl leaned in.
"They're opening across the street?"
Marcus nodded.
"Directly across. Like wave-from-the-window close."
Luke stepped out of the office just then.
"What's going on?"
Rose handed him the phone.
Luke read it.
His expression didn't change much.
But I knew that look.
He was calculating.
Marcus threw his hands up.
"They're trying to crush us!"
Carl nodded.
"High-end competition, big money, fast build."
Rose added quietly,
"And no emotional attachment."
Luke looked toward the window.
Across the street…
Construction barriers were already being set up.
"They're moving fast," he said.
Marcus groaned.
"I don't like fast."
I stepped closer to Luke.
"What do we do?"
Luke didn't answer right away.
Before he could
The door opened.
And this time it wasn't a customer.
It was a small group of people.
Two in suits.
One holding a tablet.
City officials.
Marcus whispered,
"Oh come on…"
Rose straightened immediately.
"Good afternoon."
One of the officials stepped forward.
"We're here regarding your permit review."
Carl muttered,
"Here we go."
Luke nodded.
"We've been expecting you."
The official continued.
"There have been additional complaints filed."
Marcus blinked.
"Additional?"
Rose frowned.
"About what?"
The official glanced at the tablet.
"Safety concerns. Capacity limits. Structural compliance."
Carl stepped forward.
"That's nonsense."
The official raised a hand.
"We'll need to conduct a full inspection."
Marcus whispered,
"This is sabotage."
Rose didn't disagree.
Luke stayed calm.
"You're welcome to inspect anything."
The officials moved through the restaurant.
Checking.
Measuring.
Taking notes.
Customers watched nervously.
The energy shifted.
Tense.
Uncertain.
Marcus leaned close to me.
"They're trying to shut us down before the new place opens."
I nodded.
"I know."
Across the room, Rose stood very still.
Watching.
Thinking.
Then suddenly
She walked straight to the officials.
"Excuse me."
They turned.
Rose's voice was calm.
But firm.
"I'd like to file a formal report."
Marcus blinked.
"…wait what?"
Luke looked at her.
"Rose?"
Rose didn't hesitate.
"I have reason to believe these complaints are being submitted in bad faith."
The official frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Rose pulled out her tablet.
"I've been tracking the submission patterns."
Marcus whispered,
"Since when do you track things like that?"
Carl answered quietly,
"She always has."
Rose continued.
"All complaints originated from the same corporate IP range."
The official's expression changed.
"That's a serious claim."
Rose nodded.
"It traces back to a development firm."
Luke already knew.
"Hale Urban Developments."
Marcus whispered,
"Oh snap."
The official looked at Rose carefully.
"If this is true…"
Rose met his gaze.
"It is."
The official nodded slowly.
"We'll review this immediately."
The tone had shifted.
Not suspicion anymore.
Concern.
Carl smirked slightly.
"Well played."
Marcus grinned.
"Rose just flipped the script."
The officials continued their inspection but now with a different attitude.
Less aggressive.
More neutral.
Luke walked over to Rose quietly.
"You didn't tell me you were tracking this."
Rose shrugged slightly.
"I had a feeling."
Luke nodded.
"Good instinct."
But before the moment could settle
Something else happened.
A loud crash came from the kitchen.
Everyone turned.
Marcus yelled,
"I DIDN'T TOUCH ANYTHING!"
Carl rushed back there.
"What happened?"
A pan had fallen.
Nothing serious.
But the sudden noise startled the baby.
He started crying.
Loud.
Sharp.
Immediate.
My heart jumped.
"I've got him," I said, moving quickly.
But Luke was already there.
Too fast.
Too tense.
"Careful"
"I'm fine, Luke."
The baby cried harder.
The noise.
The stress.
The unfamiliar tension in the room.
Luke's voice rose slightly.
"Take him upstairs."
I paused.
"I can handle him here."
"Amara."
That tone again.
Protective.
Sharp.
I looked at him.
"I said I've got him."
For a second—
We both realized it at the same time.
We weren't alone.
Customers.
Staff.
City officials.
Everyone watching.
Marcus whispered to Rose,
"…they're about to get caught arguing."
Rose nodded quietly.
Luke lowered his voice immediately.
"Not here."
I adjusted the baby in my arms, calming him gently.
"He's okay."
Luke exhaled slowly.
He stepped back.
Regaining control.
The baby's cries softened.
Then stopped.
I looked at Luke.
He looked shaken.
Not from the restaurant.
From us.
From the moment.
From almost letting something private become public.
Rose saw it too.
She stepped in smoothly.
"Luke," she said calmly, "the inspector wants to review the back storage."
Luke nodded.
"Right."
He walked away.
Back into control.
Back into leadership.
Marcus leaned toward me.
"That was close."
I nodded.
"Too close."
Rose walked back over once Luke was out of earshot.
"You two need to be careful."
I sighed.
"I know."
Rose softened.
"He's trying to protect everything at once."
"I see that."
Rose looked toward the kitchen.
"But he can't do it alone."
I looked down at my son.
Then back at the restaurant.
Then toward Luke.
Standing tall again.
Handling inspectors.
Defending what he built.
But carrying more than anyone could see.
And I realized something in that moment
This wasn't just about competition anymore.
It wasn't just about the restaurant.
It was about holding a family together under pressure.
And that kind of balance?
That's harder than any business deal.
