Chapter 10 - Last Training

Chapter 10 — The First Signs

The days following the announcement at Aether Academy grew quieter, but the silence felt different now. It was not the calm of routine—it was the calm before pressure. Everywhere across the academy, students trained with a new kind of focus. Conversations shortened. Laughter came less often. Even the air seemed heavier, as if the world itself was waiting. Ethan continued his routine unchanged. Morning circulation. Controlled reinforcement. Precise low-mana shaping. No sudden increase. No reckless expansion. Just stability. Kael, however, was different.

"You're seriously not increasing your output?"

They stood in a lower practice hall, faint runes glowing beneath their feet.

"You're going to fall behind if you don't push," Kael added.

Ethan adjusted his stance, letting his mana flow evenly through his body.

"If I push too early, I'll damage my core."

Kael clicked his tongue.

"You always say that."

"And you always rush."

Kael grinned, then vanished in a flash of light, reappearing just behind Ethan. Ethan turned just in time, raising his arm with light reinforcement. The impact wasn't heavy, but it was fast—faster than before. Kael had improved. Ethan slid back slightly, regaining balance. No wasted motion. No panic. The spar continued for several minutes. Short bursts. Controlled exchanges. Neither overwhelming the other. At the end, both stepped back, breathing steady but slightly heavier than usual.

"You're still holding back," Kael said.

"You're still wasting mana," Ethan replied.

Kael laughed.

"Fair."

Later that evening, Ethan returned to the deeper levels of the academy library. The same section. The same stone slab. The Ancient Rune fragment stood silent behind its barrier. Ethan didn't approach immediately this time. He simply observed from a distance. Something felt… off. Not broken. Not unstable. Just slightly different. He stepped closer. The fracture he had noticed days ago was still there. Unchanged. But the flow of mana around it felt smoother than before. Not fixed. But less disrupted.

"Still staring at that thing?"

Kael again. Ethan didn't turn this time.

"It doesn't feel the same."

Kael walked beside him, arms crossed.

"It looks exactly the same."

Ethan raised his hand slightly, stopping before the barrier. He didn't trace anything this time. Didn't move. Just watched. For a brief second, the rune flickered again. Faint. Subtle. Like a breath. Kael saw it this time.

"…Okay, that's not normal."

Ethan lowered his hand.

"No."

Neither of them spoke for a moment. Then Kael shrugged, trying to brush it off.

"Probably just reacting to mana density in here."

"Maybe."

But Ethan knew it wasn't random. That night, during meditation, something changed. Not in strength. Not in quantity. In depth. His mana didn't expand outward—it sank inward. Like a current moving beneath the surface instead of above it. It didn't feel dangerous. It didn't feel powerful. It felt… stable. Too stable. For a moment, the world around him seemed distant. Sounds dulled. The flow of mana across the academy grounds became clearer—not visually, but instinctively. Then it stopped. Everything returned to normal. Ethan opened his eyes slowly.

"…What was that?"

No answer came.

Far beyond the world, where space itself held no meaning, something observed. Not curiosity. Not concern. Recognition. The Last Conqueror of Power did not move. Did not speak. But the faintest shift occurred—attention narrowing by an immeasurable degree. Not toward the academy. Not toward the world. Toward a single presence within it. Not important. Not yet. But… consistent. Back in Aethernox, the night continued as normal. Students slept. Mana flowed. The city glowed quietly beneath the stars. But beneath that calm, something had begun to change. Not dramatically. Not visibly. Just enough that, when the Mana Capacity Test arrived, the results would not be as simple as anyone expected.
