Chapter 1 - Witnessing Something Terrible

Jason exhaled a long sigh as he sat in the classroom. He watched, bored out of his mind, as the students around him laughed to themselves and joked around. The teacher was out of the classroom on important business and his classmates took that as an excuse to create chaos. Not that he cared, as he was a teenager too. But there was something more on his mind.

He removed his phone and stared at it, scowling in anger. He had been calling his girlfriend for the past two hours and she had not picked up. Not once. She didn't come to school today, even though she promised to. Where the hell was she? It was seriously annoying him and he hated feeling that way. It had started again. The usual signs before a break up were inevitable. The missed calls, deflection of meaningful talks, empty promises, and gaslighting.

"She has not picked up, has she?" A voice beside him asked, prompting him to look beside him. It was his best friend Aiden, a concerned look on his face.

"Yeah," Jason replied. "It's really annoying. She's been dodging my calls for weeks. She never tells me where she is, anytime we do talk is about shit like this, she insults and shuns me and makes me look like the bad person in the relationship."

Aiden sighed before looking away for a moment then he turned. "You know she's cheating on you, right?"

"I know." Jason snapped. "I'm not that dumb."

"Then why haven't you dumped her since?" Aiden fired back, incredulous. "You can't be serious."

"Because everyone deserves a second chance," Jason replied. "I'm giving her that chance. "

Aiden shook his head in dismay. "Don't say I didn't warn you, man. Elena will be the death of you. You knew she was out of your league yet you still pursued her. It still baffles me to this day."

Jason didn't reply, still tapping on his phone, hoping that she'd pick up the call so he could mend the relationship. He really wanted to try. He knew he was average-looking, broke as hell, a nobody in school, but he really wanted to prove something to her that he was the best man for her. He'll forgive what she had done, forgive everything if only she picked up the phone.

"So," Aiden interrupted, snapping him out of his brooding thoughts. "I know you don't want to hear this but I was wondering why your sister didn't come to school today."

Jason ignored him and focused on his phone again, the chaos in the classroom becoming louder and louder by the minute. He wasn't going to answer that question. All everybody did was talk about his popular twin sister, how beautiful and perfect she was, how he was never like her, how they even wonder if he was switched at birth. Everybody was simping on his untouchable sister, including his best friend. Not like he was ever going to have a chance since she wasn't straight.

Suddenly, the door opened swiftly and Jason looked up from his phone as a figure strode in like he owned the world. Jason's expression didn't change as the young man appeared, the same couldn't be said for his classmates as audible gasps and squeals erupted from their throats. The young man who strode in was Jayden Smoak who had recently awakened as a Brawler, the third in his class, and an A-rank. Just yesterday's, his face was on the news and now he was back in school.

Only a few people awakened every year since a dangerous experiment went terribly wrong ten years ago, many people had died from what was going to be known as the Everoix Virus. After containment of the virus by the government, it was discovered that a few people's dna's had mutated, giving them physical changes and rare mutations. It was not only physical but also ocular, vocal, and mental. It was one in a million and the governments around the world decided to use the people who unlocked them as heroes and special people who would protect the world from external attacks. But that was not the only thing that happened, two years after the great change, rare cracks appeared out of thin air and were now seen in different locations around the earth. A brave expedition of the heroes or Brawlers as they called themselves, explored the huge crack and discovered both resources and dangerous beasts. Most didn't make it out alive.

The government decided to start exploring the ruins, collecting resources and discovering new species that would help benefit their country. Years had now passed, people who awakened were treated as gods and were ranked from F to S. They were celebrities, quickly recruited into gangs and factions that were created for exploring the ruins. Jayden Smoak had become one of them, a bully that had brought him terror in school.

Jason frowned as the young man walked calmly to his seat and sat down. Life wasn't fair at all, of all the people that had gone awake, it was the scumbag that got it. He watched as a beautiful young woman got up from her chair and proceeded to go to Jayden and sit on his lap and then draped her arms around him. It was his ex Melinda, the girl who had dumped him two years ago for absolutely no reason. Now she was French kissing Jayden like she hadn't seen him in years.

He was useless, he knew it in his heart. He was also a failure in love, seemingly getting the wrong girls who would dump him for no reason. But he wanted to try with Elena once more, he wasn't ready to quit just yet.

After a few minutes, he had had enough of the attention on Jayden Smoak and he got up and walked out of the classroom and went to the bathroom.

He walked up to the sink and washed his face thoroughly then he switched off the tap, wiped his face, and then stared at his reflection in the mirror. He was average height and he had green eyes. His hair was originally black but he dyed it yellow and curled it. He wasn't that bad looking which pleased him a bit.

He walked out of the bathroom and went straight back to class, waiting for classes to finish so he could leave the school premises.

Thirty minutes later, classes had ended for the day and Jason said goodbye to his best friend before walking out of the classroom and walking towards the school door that led outside. He wasn't going to think about his ex or Jayden or Elena. He was going to put that at the back of his mind.

He immediately made his way to the bus stop and waited for the bus to appear. As the bus appeared, he brought out cash and paid the driver before clambering into the bus and sitting down in an empty seat. As the bus took off, thoughts filled his head about how dull and monotone his life was. His parents were great but they were not invested in him as much as they were invested in his twin sister Jasmine. That was understandable since she had awakened and had become a Brawler. He was not sure he was going to awaken, not sure at all.

The bus arrived at his destination and he got out, it was his house. He hadn't been here in a week as he was staying at a friend's but now he was back. He walked up to his house, removed his key from his pocket and opened the door, and stepped in.

There was soft music heard around the house and there was laughter in the kitchen. Curious, Jason walked into the huge kitchen and saw his father and mother laughing and joking with one another as they were cooking. As soon as they saw him, the smiles faded quickly and they dropped everything they were doing.

"Jason." His mother called, nervously. "You're back. You didn't call to say that you were coming home. Why."

Jason frowned as he couldn't understand why he's mom was asking something like that. "Why should I?"

"You could have just called or something." His father replied for her. "It's not going to hurt you one bit if you did."

"Where's Jasmine?" Jason asked as he couldn't see her anywhere. "Is she upstairs?"

At that moment, Jason knew something was wrong but he couldn't put a finger on it. He tried to make his way out of the kitchen but his mom was blocking him. "Mom, what are you doing? Let me leave. Why are you being so weird?"

His mother tried to force him to stay but Jason burst free and made his way upstairs. He walked until he reached his bedroom then he heard laughter from the room beside him, his sister's room and something compelled him to open the door. He didn't know why but he did. He knew that no sane person would open his iwn sister's room if he wanted to die old but he felt the urge to.

He opened the door and walked in and then he stopped in horror. He couldn't believe his eyes, he felt he was going to be sick. There were two people covered in bedsheets to his bed, definitely naked, and they were laughing.

As they saw him, their face turned to horror as they separated, and Jason could finally get a good look at them with rage filling his heart. In the bed was his twin sister and next to her was the last person he ever thought he was going to see.

It was his girlfriend. Elena was in her bed and things were not going to remain the same, ever again.
