Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: The Call

The Queens apartment was quiet in the late afternoon—golden light slanting through patched windows, dust motes drifting like tiny stars. The siege scars had been cleaned, the glass replaced, the webbing scrubbed away. Life had returned to a fragile normal: coffee brewing, soft music from a speaker, four people breathing easier but still carrying the weight of the night before.

Alex sat alone on the rooftop—legs dangling over the edge, phone in hand. The city sprawled below—alive, indifferent, beautiful in its chaos. He'd spent the morning replaying the fight, the healing, the quiet moments after. But one thought kept circling back: Steve Rogers.

He'd spoken to him once—brief, cautious. Steve had listened. Hadn't committed. Hadn't rejected. Just… considered.

Now, after Tony's public break from the Accords, after Ross's failed assault, after the leaks had cracked the machine wide open—Alex felt the moment had come.

He pressed the call button.

It rang twice.

A low, familiar voice answered—steady, but carrying the weight of years.

"Kane."

Alex exhaled—slow, steady. "Steve. It's Alex."

A small pause—then warmth, cautious but real. "I was hoping you'd call."

Alex leaned back against the railing. "I heard about Tony. The press conference. He said you were right."

Steve's voice softened. "He did. And he meant it. We talked last night. Long. Raw. No masks. Just… two guys who hurt each other trying to figure out how to stop."

Alex closed his eyes briefly—relief washing through him. "How did it go?"

Steve laughed—small, surprised. "Better than I expected. He apologized. For Leipzig. For Siberia. For letting the Accords blind him. I apologized too—for walking away. For choosing sides over people. We didn't fix everything. But we started."

Alex's throat tightened. "That's more than I hoped for."

Steve's tone shifted—gentler. "There's more. Bucky called me. After hearing Tony's speech. He's been hiding—Montana, off-grid. But he heard it. And he… he talked. Really talked. Said he's thinking about coming in. About seeing what we can rebuild. No pressure. Just… possibility."

Alex opened his eyes—tears prickling. "He's ready?"

"Not all the way," Steve admitted. "But he's thinking about it. That's huge for him. For any of us."

Silence stretched—comfortable, hopeful.

Then Steve spoke again—quiet, direct. "Alex… I'm done running. I want to come back. Not to the Avengers as they were. Not to the Accords. To something new. Neutral ground. People first. I want to meet you. Meet your family. Talk. Really talk. If the offer still stands."

Alex's voice cracked—raw, grateful. "It stands. Always has. Whenever you're ready. Here. No sides. No judgment. Just… us."

Steve exhaled—long, relieved. "Soon. I'll bring Sam. Bucky… if he's ready. Maybe Tony too, if he'll come. We'll figure it out. Together."

Alex smiled—small, real. "We will."

They talked a little longer—small things. Steve asked about the siege—wanted details, wanted to know they were safe. Alex told him—honest, unvarnished. Steve listened—quiet pride in his voice.

When the call ended, Alex stayed on the roof—phone warm in his hand, heart lighter than it had been in years.

He walked back inside—found the three women waiting.

Gwen looked up first—eyes searching. "You called him."

Alex nodded—sat between them on the couch. "Steve's coming. Soon. He talked to Tony. They're… starting to mend. Bucky's thinking about it too. They want to meet. All of us. No sides. Just people."

Natasha's hand found his—squeezing once. "You did good."

Wanda leaned against him—red energy brushing his cheek. "You gave them hope. Like you gave us."

Gwen kissed his temple—soft, proud. "We're ready. Whenever they are."

Alex pulled them close—arms around all three.

The city hummed outside—alive, waiting.

Inside, four hearts beat together—stronger, surer.

The fractures were healing.

The team—old and new—was finding its way back.

And Alex Kane—from two worlds, two lives—finally felt like he belonged to something bigger than survival.

To love.

To family.

To home.
