Chapter 5:
Everyone in this house fears someone.
No one admits it.
Yet the fear lingers—on the walls, the chairs, in every breath.
Kenzo Montclair. Kael's grandfather.
I see him for the first time in the afternoon.
Sitting in a wheelchair, by the window.
Age has touched his body, but not his eyes.
Those eyes—
They see everything.
They understand everything.
I pause.
Naturally, I should be afraid.
But strangely… I am not.
He looks at me.
For a long time.
No one speaks.
I realize—
This isn't a test.
It's an observation.
I step forward slowly.
Breaking the rules.
Because in this house, no one approaches him willingly.
"Do you like the sunlight by the window?" I ask.
It feels like the air itself has stopped.
Kael's gaze burns along my back—I feel it.
But I don't look back.
Kenzo Montclair doesn't respond at first.
Then—
a faint smile.
Very faint.
Yet in this house, it feels like an earthquake.
"Everyone assumes I am blind,"
he says slowly,
"but I can see the light just fine."
I smile lightly.
"Then you're not alone. Many here are blind—eyes open, yet they cannot see."
No one breathes.
Kael straightens up.
Surprised.
Worried.
I notice.
Kenzo looks at me again.
This time, deeply.
"You're not afraid," he says.
I shrug.
"If I were afraid, I couldn't speak.
And I love to speak."
Then he smiles.
Clearly. Truly.
No one in this house has ever made Kenzo Montclair smile like that.
"You understand the Montclair name,"
he says,
"but you haven't been sold to it."
I speak slowly.
"A name doesn't make the person.
A person makes the name understood."
Silence.
Kael stands.
Looking at me as if—
he's seeing me anew.
I realize—
This moment isn't just mine.
It's dangerous.
Kenzo suddenly says,
"Kael."
Kael responds immediately.
"Yes, grandfather."
"Look at your wife,"
Kenzo says quietly,
"She hasn't broken. If she had, it would have shown."
Kael says nothing.
He cannot.
I understand—
Kenzo Montclair worries for his beloved grandson.
But his love isn't spoken—it's shown through choice.
And today…
He has chosen me.
When I leave the room, everyone watches.
In disbelief.
In fear.
In envy.
Kael walks beside me and whispers slowly,
"Do you know what you've done?"
I look at him.
For the first time, I am not afraid.
"No," I say,
"But I know he saw me."
Kael falls silent.
Many in this house hold power.
But today I understand—
Who Kenzo Montclair looks at,
Is no longer ordinary.
And Kael…
Today, he realizes for the first time—
This marriage isn't just a contract.
It's the beginning of a shift in the rules.
