Chapter 5 - What Happened After the Burn

Where am I? What is this place?

It was a dark and endlessly void place. There was nothing but the sense of thought; breathing or hearing seemed like they did not exist.

"...Can anyone hear me? Is anybody there?"

He shouted around in search for anyone. It was such a faint call that it would most like not be heard by anyone.

The entire environment around Kean had started to make him feel anxious. The lack of presence was uncomfortable to his mind, making him feel like he would lose his insanity.

Memories came flooding back to Kean, ones that had only been created a mere moment ago. The village, the people, his mother and father.

Everything and everyone— all that occurred and also what he saw.

What happened seemed so distant to him, as if it happened a long time ago, even though it had been only been a few hours ago.

He couldn't picture it anymore. It was as if the people and their faces had vanished from his mind, their existence becoming a lost memory.

What happened?! I don't remember anymore.

Then his nose caught a somewhat familiar scent. All his senses went numb in an instant and left him completely paralyzed, his breathing rapidly increasing with every passing second. His heart pulsated so fast that it felt like it would either explode or rip through his chest at any moment.

A tall, standing flame was above the entire village, consuming everything into it, the only thing that was left at the end was ashes.

A group of people dressed in a dark blood-red armor could be seen standing Infront of their own creation, the light of the fire reflecting upon the shining blood on them.

Seeing that Kean felt multiple emotions at once— fear and anxiety, as well as hatred and resentment. He wanted to run away from what he saw in the distance, but at the same time he also wished to make them pay for the sins that they had committed.

His eyes full of determination, and his mouth trembled with panic. He was helpless against such people and their strength, as well as their abilities.

Then he saw something that made his heart shatter into million of pieces—

There she stood, right between Kean and the huge fire. She had a big smile on her face, one that would just bring warmth to anyone who saw it.

He couldn't believe his eyes— he wouldn't. What he saw was impossible. His mother was gone from the world of the living; he saw her being eaten... and yet he was so happy to be able to see her again. His vision grew blurry and his nose stuffed up. The pain of breathing in the snot that leaked out was immense, but it didn't matter to Kean. All he wanted to do was to not take his eyes away from his mother.

Kean started to cry out in agony. In that moment he seemed like just a little child that was longing for his mother's love. Who is to say that he wasn't still one? He had been so young when it all happened.

Kean then closed his eyes as the truth settled in, he took a deep breath before reminding himself.

Oh... I remember now—They're dead.

[You have managed to survive this incident—but your future awaits things that are beyond the humans imagination.]

A distant and unrecognizable voice spoke to Kean.

"Who are you?! What do you mean by that? What is this place? Tell me!—You have to tell me!"

---

He opened his bloodshot eyes and looked upon the sky at the moving clouds. The stars were visibly shining upon the surface of the earth.

The multicolored flowers gently swayed under the soft moonlight, and the wind blew their sweet scent through the air. They slowly brushed along his body, in a way it was as if the flowers were caressing his skin.

Kean stood up with his overtired body, using all the muscles to the limit just by doing one simple action.

He first thought about running away to a safer place— a distant village maybe. Then it came to mind that there could be some survivors outside of his home village.

"Alright, so now... Which direction leads back to the village?"

Kean saw the little trail of blood splatter on the flowers. it was the one that he had made when he ran away from the crawler. With it, he surely could find the way back home.

"If I just go straight from the blood trail then I should end up back in the village."

Kean walked of into the direction that the blood trail pointed. He thought about who he should search for first. There had to be someone who was still alive, if there was someone then he wouldn't be alone, and they could think of their next steps together.

The parents, the trainer or even the other children... he wondered about who could be still around. Then he had the idea that the nurse might still be there. If survivors were at the village, then nurse Tanrel would be there to treat them.

Gaulmer! he's probably alive, he must be— I mean he is the toughest of all of us.

Kean remembered that he had seen Gaulmer on the way out. He would surely have survived. After all, he was a family member of the brute weights. Kean didn't really like the idea of being alone with him after everything that had happened. He would probably need something— or someone— to let out all his frustration and anger.

Kean started to speed up as he walked, his face filled with a deep worry on it. He was still exhausted from all that his body had gone through in one day.

Then he stumbled upon something terrifying—

"I feel sick."

Kean felt his stomach burning and his mouth drying up, leaving a strange taste inside it

"...Uugghh blaaagghhh."

He emptied all the contents of his stomach out through the mouth. Tears formed in his eyes as he felt some sort of sharp pain in his throat.

His vomit fell onto a distorted corpse. It's eyes were missing and the jaw was gone. As to the lower part of the body... The lower torso was ripped open with the intestines completely gone and the spine lying right beside the legs. The other limbs were mostly missing, with many bite holes on every possible location.

He covered his already blood- and puke smeared mouth with his hand, trying to contain what hadn't come out before.

No, I can't go back!

There were dead bodies everywhere, scattered all across the tree roots in the forest.

The sight of all the scattered people in front of him made him feel a terrible ache in his stomach, the rest of the vomit rose out of his mouth without stopping until it leaked through his fingers.

The scene before him was too much at once that he couldn't handle, he rubbed his arm on his dirty mouth an in just a matter of second he ran away.

After some time Kean stopped and took a deep breath. He had wandered of into a completely unknown place.

He heard a faint rustling behind him, and as he turned around to look, he got smacked right in the head.
