Chapter 7 — Shadows in the Rift
The Hero Association building didn't look like a place that manufactured legends, but more of a government office. Polished floors and white lighting. Too many screens, and too much coffee.
Yet the air hummed with something sharper than bureaucracy—power.
Low-rank Heroes moved through the lobby in restless pattern. There boots scrapping the tile, armor clinking softly, mana flickering faintly around those who could not fully suppress it. Some looked tired, others looked arrogant, a few of them where afraid.
Aaron walked through the sliding glass. His F-Rank badge hung from his chest like a warning label. To most, it meant useless but for him, it meant freedom.
He adjusted the strap of his backpack and walked toward the Rift Assignment Board. Massive digital screens cycled through active portals across the region—unstable zones where reality tore open and spat out monsters like infection.
Some were restricted to A-Rank teams, others where to B-rank.
Most hovered at E and D, those were perfect training grounds. He scanned quickly. Then he found it.
E-Rank Rift – Mana Stone Retrieval
Team Size: 4
Estimated Threat: Low D-Rank Boss
Compensation: 10,000 yen
Casualty Probability: 18%
Aaron's lips curved faintly. Eighteen percent, almost one in five.
He tapped the screen and accepted. The system acknowledged instantly.
TEAM ASSIGNMENT CONFIRMED
1. Kaito – D-Rank Mage (Area Control Specialist)
2. Haru – E-Rank Archer (Precision / High Crit)
3. Ren – E-Rank Swordsman (Close-Range Aggression)
4. Aaron Yaghan – F-Rank Carrier
Carrier, he almost laughed. He still remembered the old days, now it had no meaning, because labels no longer defined him.
The three others gathered near the portal chamber.
Kaito looked disciplined. His robes where clean, eyes calm, mana stable and controlled.
Haru leaned casually against the wall, twirling an arrow between gloved fingers.
Ren looked exactly like the type that underestimated opponents and paid for it.
They noticed him.
"Stay behind us," Kaito said flatly. "If things go bad, don't try to be a hero."
Haru smirked. "If he tries anything, he'll just get in the way."
Ren snorted. "F-Rank. Great. We're babysitting."
Aaron adjusted his sleeve calmly.
"Understood," he replied.
There was no attitude or ego. Just compliance.
And It irritated them more than if he had argued.
The portal chamber doors opened.
The Rift shimmered ahead, like torn glass filled with liquid starlight.
The hum vibrated in Aaron's bones.
And beneath it—
His system pulsed.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
[RIFT DETECTED
ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLE: DISTORTED MANA DENSITY
COMBAT PROBABILITY: HIGH]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
His eyes sharpened but his voice low.
"Interesting", he said.
As they stepped through, the world changed instantly.
The air tasted metallic.
The sky hung low and gray, like bruised skin stretched too tight.
Cracked stone terrain extended in patterns. Ruined pillars stood like broken teeth. Faint streams of mana drifted like smoke between the rocks.
Aaron inhaled, his Focus stat activated almost automatically. Allowing him to see more than the others.
He saw patterns in the mana flow, where it thickened and something that had passed recently.
"Stay tight," Kaito ordered.
A shriek split the air.
Goblins poured from behind broken stones. Small, fast, razor teeth and rusted blades.
Kaito lifted a hand.
A cone of frost erupted outward, freezing three instantly.
Haru's arrows flew—clean, precise headshots.
Ren charged forward, blade cutting down goblins as he laughed.
Aaron moved last, and vanished. Not literally but efficiently. He stepped sideways into a blind zone created by Ren's forward push.
A goblin lunged. Aaron caught its wrist. Twisted it and drove his dagger under the jaw.
The body fell silently.
[XP: +20]
Another goblin sprinted past Haru's line of sight.
Aaron intercepted it mid-run, slashed the tendon, finished with a throat cut.
[XP +20]
He moved through combat like a delete button.
Every mistake the team made—
He erased.
Every blind angle—
He covered.
They didn't even realize he was fighting.
They assumed the frost and arrows were enough.
He kept it that way.
Ten minutes in—
They had cleared three packs.
Aaron's internal counter ticked upward.
[XP +100
XP: 175 / 400]
The hum in his veins deepened.
His muscles felt slightly tighter. More responsive.
But something else caught his attention.
The mana in this Rift wasn't stable, it pulsed irregularly, almost like a heartbeat. Way too organized for random fluctuation.
He filed the observation away and they moved deeper.
At this point it wasn't only the rift that was changing but even the goblins began change.
They became smarter, moving in coordinated flanks.
Ren took a shallow cut across his shoulder.
"Damn things," he growled.
Aaron noticed immediately—
The goblins were herding.
Not attacking randomly, but hunting.
"Left side," Aaron said calmly.
The team froze slightly.
"What?" Haru snapped.
"Left ridge. Three more."
Kaito turned—
Too late.
Three goblins leapt from the ridge. Aaron had already moved, he grabbed one mid-air and slammed it down.
He Spun, kicking the second into Kaito's frost blast. His dagger flashed across the third's throat.
Silence, no XP this time.
Haru stared.
"…How did you—"
Aaron wiped his blade on a fallen goblin.
"Just lucky."
Ren scoffed, but his eyes narrowed.
The Rift deepened further.
And then—
They reached the clearing.
The Goblin General stood waiting.
But it wasn't alone.
Behind it—
A tear in space.
A second fracture.
Kaito swore under his breath.
"That's not in the report."
The Rift pulsed violently, something stepping through.
It wasn't a goblin, Not even humanoid. Just mass of shadowed bone and mana corruption.
An Aberrant, beings born of pure corruption.
It has four limbs. It's spine bursted out backward. Eyes burning of violet.

[ERROR: RIFT INSTABILITY DETECTED
BOSS MUTATION CONFIRMED
THREAT LEVEL ADJUSTED: D+]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Ren swallowed hard.
Haru lowered his bow slightly.
"That wasn't in the contract."
Aaron's pulse slowed, not sped. Slowed.
Finally, something worth his effort.
The mutated creature screeched and launched forward with impossible speed.
Kaito cast frost—
The creature shattered it mid-air.
Ren charged foward—
He was too slow.
The creature slammed him sideways into stone, his bones cracked. He screamed in pain.
Haru fired three arrows—
Two bounced off it's bone plating, the other one embedded shallowly.
The creature barely flinched.
The Goblin General roared and joined the charge, chaos erupted.
Aaron assessed the situation instantly. The frontline was already collapsing. Mage overwhelmed and archer retreating.
If this continued—
Casualty probability would spike past 18%.
The system appeared almost instantly.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
[COMBAT DRILL PASSIVE: ACTIVE
CRITICAL AWARENESS +5%
COMBAT ADAPTATION ENGAGED]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Aaron exhaled once, then finally stepped forward.
The mutated beast lunged at Kaito.
Aaron intercepted.
He blocked the attack, grabbed a rib and used the creature's own momentum to twist its trajectory sideways.
The impact cratered stone.
Haru stared.
"…What?"
Aaron didn't answer.
The Goblin General swung its jagged sword toward him.
Aaron ducked under the blade and used his dagger to cut off the joint beneath its arm.
Precise and targeted.
It unleashed a horrific roar.
The mutated monster recovered faster than expected. It struck downward with crushing force.
Aaron rolled backwards.
The impact shattered the ground where he had stood.
His brain moved like a computer, calculating weak points, angles and tragectory
Then—
He saw it, the creature's spine glowed faintly at its center, an instability core.
Not a natural boss but a forced mutation.
Which meant—
It was unstable.
"Distract it," Aaron said calmly.
Haru blinked.
"What—"
"Now."
Something in Aaron's voice shifted.
It wasn't loud or commanding. Just certain.
Haru moved instinctively.
Kaito regained composure and launched layered frost barriers to restrict movement.
Aaron sprinted.
The creature tracked him.
Perfect.
He led it toward the Rift fracture behind the clearing.
Mana density increased there. He felt it pressing against his skin.
The creature lunged, Aaron slid under its body and came up behind it. Then drove his dagger straight into the glowing spinal core.
The creature shrieked—
Mana exploded outward.
Aaron didn't let go. He twisted the blade and poured Focus into the strike.
Not mana, not strength but precision.
The core fractured, energy backfired violently. The beast convulsed then detonated in a burst of shadow.
Silence crashed down.
The Goblin General froze. It was terrified.
Aaron ran towards it. Calm and controlled.
The general swung it's sword but Aaron parried every attack cleanly.
Stepped inside its guard and ended it with a single upward thrust beneath the chin.
Both bodies fell.
The Rift trembled violently, the fracture widened.
Kaito whispered, "…What's happening."
Aaron looked at the expanding tear. Then the system responded.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
[HIDDEN EVENT TRIGGERED
RIFT SUB-CORE REVEALED
OPTIONAL OBJECTIVE AVAILABLE]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
He didn't hesitate.
"Get Ren out," he said calmly.
"What are you doing?" Haru demanded.
"Finishing the job of course."
Before they could argue—
Aaron stepped into the expanding fracture alone.
Inside was darkness, floating stone fragments.
Gravity was distorted and Mana density, suffocating to the human lungs.
In the center—
A pulsing orb of corrupted light.
The Rift's heart.
And wrapped around it—
A shadow humanoid far larger than anything before.
No features, just eyes. Ancient and watching.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
[ WARNING: UNREGISTERED ENTITY
DESIGNATION: UNKNOWN
THREAT LEVEL: ???]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Aaron's heartbeat slowed. This was beyond E-Rank or D-rank.
This was something else. The shadow entity moved.
Aaron barely avoided the first strike, the force alone shattered floating stone behind him.
His shoulder was severed from the shockwave alone.
Now this was real challenge. He moved faster than before. His stats weren't elite but his adaptation was.
He read movements mid-attack, adjusting his body before failure could breach. Even used floating debris as leverage.
The entity struck again, Aaron redirected.
Slashed.
The blade barely scratched.
He needed more.
The system pulsed violently.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
[TITLE RESONANCE DETECTED
DESCENDANT OF ADAMAN– PASSIVE AWAKENING]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
To him the world slowed down completely.
Aaron saw patterns in thg ve entity's movement.
Saw its core oscillating between two phases
He smiled faintly
"Got you."
He baited a heavy strike, letting it hit then forced the phase.
In that second of instability—
He drove his dagger through the exact convergence point of mana. The entity froze.
Cracked, then shattered like fractured glass.
The Rift core destabilized. Aaron grabbed the pulsing orb and crushed it with both hands.
White light consumed everything.
Outside, Kaito and Haru shielded their eyes.
The Rift imploded inward, collapsed then finally sealed.
Aaron stumbled out last, his clothes thorn, arm bleeding but his eyes were calm and steady.
The portal closed bQqwsehind him permanently, then the system appeared
[HIDDEN SUB-CORE CLEARED
XP +100]
Haru stared at him.
Ren, barely conscious, whispered—
"…Is he really F-Rank…?"
Aaron adjusted his sleeve over the bleeding cut.way
"Let's get paid."
Back at the Association—
The Rift was classified as "unstable anomaly."
Credit went to the team.
But internally Aaron knew the truth.
He left the association after getting his payment.
They had walked away with ten thousand yen. He walked away with the beginning of an empire.
