Elena sat on the edge of Maya's bed, watching the waving rise and fall of her daughter's chest. Maya was finally asleep, clutching a stuffed rabbit as if it were a shield.
"She's safe, Elena," Silas said from the doorway.
He had changed his shirt, but he hadn't washed the grime from his face. He looked like he had aged ten years in a single night.
"She's safe for an hour," Elena replied without looking up.
"Maybe two as long as Ochanda thinks he can get to her, she's never truly safe."
She stood up, her joints popping the adrenaline had burned out, leaving behind a cold, hard clarity. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the old Nokia. The screen was dark, but it felt like it was humming in her palm.
"The Patriarch said the Second Branch answers to me now," Elena said, finally meeting Silas's eyes.
"What does that actually mean? Am I just a figurehead, or do I have the keys?"
Silas straightened his back, a professional mask sliding over his exhaustion. "It means you have access to the Luanda black sites. It means the soldiers who dragged Cassian out of here are now your personal guard. But more importantly... it means you have the Ledger."
"The Ledger?"
"Every bribe Ochanda paid. Every port official he bought. Every 'accident' he staged for the Luo family over the last decade," Silas explained.
"Cassian kept it as insurance. If you have that, you don't just take his ports you take his life."
They moved to the basement not the wine cellar, but a reinforced bunker hidden behind a false wall of vintage crates.
This was the "War Room." Banks of monitors flickered with live feeds of the city's shipping hubs, and a long steel table sat in the center, covered in physical maps and encrypted tablets.
Elder Chen was already there, a bandage wrapped around his head. He looked up as Elena entered, his eyes filled with a fierce, old-world loyalty.
"The assets are moved, Madam," Chen said, his voice gravelly
. "Luo Logistics now controls sixty percent of the liquid capital from the North-Star takeover. We have enough to hire the 'Iron Dogs'."
"The mercenaries?" Silas asked, his brow furrowing.
"Elena, those men aren't soldiers. They're butchers if you bring them into Solana City, the police won't be the only ones breathing down your neck."
"The police are already on Ochanda's payroll, Silas," Elena said, slamming her hand onto the steel table.
"I'm done playing by the rules of a world that tried to bury me. If the Patriarch wants to see if I'm 'fit' to stay in Maya's life, I'm going to show him exactly what a Luo Empress looks like when she stops being a victim."
She pointed to the map, specifically a secluded dock on the southern edge of the city.
"Ochanda is moving a shipment tonight not drugs, not guns. It's the 'Ghost's' private servers. Everything Cassian used to blackmail the city is being moved to a safe house before the Luanda audit can catch it."
"If we hit that shipment," Silas said, a dark glint appearing in his eyes,
"we don't just hurt his wallet. We cut off his head."
"We aren't just hitting it," Elena corrected. She looked at her reflection in the dark monitors the charcoal suit was stained, her hair was a mess, and her eyes were cold flint.
"We're going to be there when he arrives. I want him to look at the 'useless housewife' while his empire burns."
The tablets buzzed on the table. One text message.
[30 Days. 29 Remaining. Don't disappoint the Pride.]
Elena didn't reply she just flipped the phone shut.
"Silas, get the guns. Elder Chen, call the Iron Dogs tell them the Empress is paying double... but I want Ochanda alive for the first ten minutes."
The salt air at Dock 14 didn't smell like the ocean it smelled of rust, stagnant water, and the impending arrival of a man who thought he was untouchable.
'Hahaaaa how laughable when a woman is given the power,'
Elena stood in the shadows of a rusted shipping container, her fingers cold against the grip of the tactical radio Silas had given her.
"Iron Dogs in position," a voice crackled deep, distorted, and devoid of any warmth.
"We see the target three black trucks one armored transport."
"Wait for my signal," Elena whispered into the mic.
Beside her, Silas checked the chamber of his rifle. The moonlight caught the sharp edge of his jaw.
"Ochanda won't come alone, Elena he'll have his personal guard. If this goes south, you head for the truck don't look back."
"I spent six years looking back, Silas," Elena said, her eyes fixed on the headlights appearing at the far end of the pier.
"Tonight, I only look forward."
The truvks came to a halt a man stepped out thick-set, wearing a silk suit that looked ridiculous in the grime of the docks. "Ochanda". He looked bored, checking his watch as his men began unloading heavy server racks from the transport.
"He thinks he's safe," Silas muttered.
"He thinks I'm at home crying over a broken gate," Elena replied. She felt a strange calm the fear for Maya had hardened into a diamond-sharp resolve. She tapped her comms.
"Dogs... bite."
The night exploded.
There were no warning shots. The Iron Dogs moved like shadows with teeth.
Muzzle flashes lit up the pier, and the sound of suppressed gunfire was punctuated by the screams of Ochanda's men. It wasn't a fight; it was an execution.
"Ochanda" scrambled for his truck, but a bullet shattered his windshield. He fell back into the oil-stained gravel, his silk suit ruined, his face a mask of pure terror as Silas stepped out of the dark, his rifle leveled at the man's chest.
Elena walked forward, her red heels clicking slowly on the concrete. She stopped inches from Ochanda, looking down at him.
"Elena?" Ochanda gasped, blood trickling from a scrape on his forehead.
"You... you're supposed to be—"
"I'm supposed to be a victim," Elena finished for him. She knelt down, ignoring the grime on her suit.
"But your 'Ghost' failed and the Lion is busy so tonight, you only have to deal with me."
She held up the old Nokia so he could see the timer.
"You have nine minutes of your ten left, Ochanda tell me where the rest of the Ghost's files are, or I let the Dogs finish their dinner."
"Hahaaaa, young woman and you think that...." before the said Ochanda could finish.
"Hahaa, Elena Luo... you have got the wrong person, do you think with everything going on you can find me so easily, you have failed the old generation....." the encrypted voice passed the message and the man they thought was Ochanda also stopped breathing.
