He was smirking.
No this couldn't be real.
A smirk? On his face?
Never, not once in her life, had she imagined that the most feared man she knew was capable of something so… human. So dangerously disarming.
"Let me go," she demanded, forcing steel into her voice.
It only made it worse because he looked like he was enjoying this.
"Why?" he asked.
There was something off about him tonight. Gérard wasn't like this. Not ever.
She frowned, studying him like he was the strange one. "Did you hit your head somewhere?"
She meant it every word.
The stunned flicker in his eyes gave her the opening she needed. She shoved him back without warning. He didn't step away, didn't even stagger but his grip loosened just enough.
Enough.
She yanked her hand free.
She tried to step back, to put distance between them, but his arms came around her waist like iron bands, locking her in place before she could escape.
Her palms pressed against his chest, pushing uselessly.
