Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: The Gremory Jurisdiction

Chapter 41: The Gremory Jurisdiction

The Silver Annex was a geological anomaly in the Underworld. While the rest of the Gremory Main Estate felt like a sprawling monument to gothic nobility and destructive power, this specific wing—Grayfia Lucifuge's personal quarters—felt like a slice of a silent, timeless library. The air was perfectly temperature-controlled, smelling of old parchment, expensive tea, and a hint of winter frost.

However, the "silent library" vibe was currently being murdered by the sounds of high-octane demonic engines and the screeching of three teenage boys.

Act 1: The Sovereign Sanctuary

"ISSEI, YOU ABSOLUTE FRAUD! USE THE RED SHELL!"

"I CAN'T! KIBA JUST HIT ME WITH A CIRCLE OF DESTRUCTION!"

"It was a tactical maneuver, Issei," Kiba replied, his voice calm but his eyes narrowing with a terrifying, hidden competitiveness. "I simply manipulated the track's spatial coordinates."

Inside the lavish parlor of the Annex, Lucian, Issei, and Kiba were sprawled across a plush velvet sofa that probably cost more than a mid-sized Japanese apartment. They weren't fighting for their lives; they were playing Underworld Kart 8, a magical console game where the characters were miniature versions of High-Class Devils.

Lucian was leaning back, his legs kicked up on a mahogany coffee table. He was munching on high-tier demonic popcorn—corn kernels harvested from the pits of Envy that popped into buttery, glowing spheres.

"We aren't getting crucified today, boys!" Lucian laughed, tossing a handful of popcorn at Issei's head. "Enjoy the invincibility frames. As long as we're behind these doors, the Holy Water can't touch us."

"I don't know, Lucian," Issei muttered, frantically tapping buttons. "I can feel Asia's aura through the walls. It feels like... like a sad kitten that found a flamethrower. It's haunting my soul."

"Focus on the race, Issei," Lucian grinned. "If you win this, I'll tell Grayfia to give you an extra sandwich."

The door to the parlor creaked open. The boys didn't even flinch—only one person had the key to this room. But instead of the silver-haired maid, a familiar, fiery figure stepped in.

Yubelluna, the former Queen of the Phoenix household and now Lucian's loyal Bishop, walked in with the grace of a seasoned warrior. She looked at the chaos—the discarded popcorn, the shouting boys, and her Master lounging like a king—and her head tilted back and forth.

"Master," she said, her voice a mix of amusement and duty. "You are causing a truly historic level of trouble. The Gremory estate is vibrating from the tension outside."

"Hey, Yube," Lucian said, dropping his controller (he was in first place anyway). "What's the word from the front lines?"

Yubelluna walked over, standing directly behind the couch. "I have just received a report from the Lucifer's intelligence network. The Tripartite Summit is being finalized. The Satans, the Archangels of Heaven, and the Governor-General of the Fallen Angels are scheduled to meet in Kuoh. Sirzechs-sama is using your 'recovery' as a cover to finalize the security details."

She leaned down, her orange eyes glowing softly. "In return for this top-secret news... I believe my Master owes me a 'contractual' payment?"

Lucian smirked. He reached up, grabbed Yubelluna by the lapels of her uniform, and pulled her down for a long, lingering kiss. It wasn't a quick peck; it was the kind of kiss that made Issei drop his controller entirely, his character driving straight off a digital cliff into a pit of lava.

"L-Lucian!" Issei wailed. "We are in a sanctuary! A place of holiness! Why are you doing this to me?!"

"Shut up, Issei," Lucian whispered against Yubelluna's lips. He pulled her over the back of the couch, and she landed softly beside him. He wrapped an arm around her, and she immediately snuggled into his side, her head resting on his chest.

"Master is very warm," she purred, reaching for the bowl of popcorn and beginning to hand-feed him. "Much warmer than the girls outside."

"Master is a lucky bastard," Issei grumbled, picking up his controller with a renewed, jealous fury.

Act 2: The Semantic War (Peerage vs. Bloodline)

While the parlor was a den of lazy hedonism, the foyer just outside the Silver Annex was a battlefield of high-tier demonic politics.

Sirzechs Lucifer was sitting in an ornate, floating chair, looking like a man who was watching his favorite reality TV show. He was slowly sipping a glass of crimson nectar, his eyes darting between his sister and his wife.

Rias Gremory stood on the left, her hair practically sparking with static electricity. Grayfia Lucifuge stood on the right, her hands folded over her apron, her face a mask of absolute, unyielding ice.

"He is my Bishop, Grayfia!" Rias's voice echoed through the hallway. "By the laws of the Rating Game and the established Peerage System of the Underworld, his physical location and his 're-education' are under my absolute jurisdiction. He belongs in Kuoh, under my supervision, so we can address his... lack of discipline."

Grayfia didn't even blink. "Lady Rias, you are quoting the new laws. The laws of the game. However, you seem to have forgotten the Ancient Traditions of House Gremory."

"Don't give me that 'Ancient Tradition' lecture," Rias snapped.

"A collateral branch member," Grayfia continued, her voice gaining a sharp, authoritative edge, "who is in a state of 'recovering' or 'spiritual flux,' falls under the care of the Head Maid and the Household Queen. As the one who literally pulled him from the ruins of the battlefield and raised him when he was a frightened child, my right of guardianship precedes your tactical piece-management."

"That was years ago!" Rias countered, her crimson aura flaring. "He is a grown man now! A man who is currently hiding behind your skirts because he knows he's in trouble!"

"If he is hiding," Grayfia said, her eyes narrowing, "it is because the environment you provide is hostile to his recovery. I saw his lips, Rias. They were swollen. He was exhausted. Until his health is verified by a neutral party—which is me—his status as your 'piece' is secondary to his status as my 'nephew'."

Act 3: The Personal Salvos (Lover vs. Aunt)

Sirzechs suppressed a giggle, the sound disguised as a cough behind his silk sleeve. This was better than any opera he had ever attended.

Rias stepped closer to Grayfia, her height almost matching the taller maid's. "He is my boyfriend, Grayfia! I am his future wife! I know his heart better than anyone in this building!"

"You know the man he has become in the human world," Grayfia replied, her voice dropping into a chilling, motherly register. "I know the boy who used to hide in my skirts when the thunderstorms over the Underworld got too loud. I know the boy who wouldn't eat his vegetables unless I promised to show him a new ice spell. You see a King-tier asset. I see a child who has been pushed too hard by your possessiveness."

"Possessiveness?!" Rias laughed, though it sounded a bit hysterical. "He snitched on us to Asia and Inari! He turned our own household against us!"

"Perhaps he felt he had no other choice," Grayfia said, her aura beginning to lower the temperature of the hallway. "A cornered animal will use any means to escape. If you had provided him with a peaceful recovery, he wouldn't have felt the need to sabotage your authority."

"Sirzechs! Tell her!" Rias screamed, spinning toward her brother. "Explain the protocol! Tell her she can't just keep him in the Annex!"

Grayfia also turned to him, her gaze piercing. "Sirzechs, explain to your sister the importance of household hierarchy and the preservation of the collateral bloodline."

Act 4: The Lucifer Verdict

Sirzechs set his glass down on a floating tray. He leaned forward, resting his chin on his hands. He looked at Rias, then at Grayfia, and finally at the closed door of the Annex, behind which he could hear a muffled shout from Issei about "Blue Shells."

"Well, Rias," Sirzechs began, his tone deceptively light. "You do have a point. The Peerage law is very clear. If a King demands the presence of their Bishop, that Bishop must comply."

Rias's face lit up with a triumphant smile.

"However," Sirzechs added, raising a finger. "Grayfia is also right. Lucian hasn't spent a single holiday or a full week in the Underworld for years. As the Satan, I find this... problematic for his cultural integration. I'm quite lonely myself, and honestly, Lucian is much more fun to talk to than the Council elders. They just complain about the inflation rate of soul-gems."

"Brother, you can't be serious," Rias whispered.

"To satisfy the 'repair' of the Gremory bond," Sirzechs declared, his voice taking on the weight of an absolute decree, "Lucian will remain in the Silver Annex for a State Mandated Vacation of one week. During this time, he is under Grayfia's sole jurisdiction."

"WHAT?!"

"Rias," Sirzechs said, his eyes glinting with mischief. "You may visit. But only during official tea hours. And you must leave the holy water, the silver crosses, and any 're-education' tools at the door. If you attempt to 'punish' him on my grounds, I will have Grayfia escort you to the border personally."

Sirzechs was clearly doing this because he wanted to see Rias handle being the "outsider" in her own family home. He wanted to watch her struggle to regain Lucian's favor while Grayfia acted as the ultimate gatekeeper.

"Enjoy your tea, Rias," Sirzechs smiled, his chair floating away down the hall.

Act 5: The "Safe" Zone

Rias stood in the hallway for a full minute, her hands balled into fists so tight they were shaking. Grayfia simply bowed, a faint, victorious glint in her eyes, and opened the door to the parlor.

"Lady Rias," Grayfia said. "Tea time has officially begun. You may enter."

Rias stormed into the room, her hair practically on fire. She was ready to scream, ready to demand an explanation, ready to drag Lucian out by his ear.

What she found stopped her dead.

Lucian was sitting on the couch, his head in Yubelluna's lap. Yubelluna was gently stroking his hair and feeding him a slice of apple. On the other side of the couch, Issei was face-down on the floor, weeping because he had lost the race, and Kiba was calmly reading a book while eating a sandwich.

Lucian looked up, a popcorn kernel still stuck to his lip. He let out a big, happy laugh.

"Rias! You made it!" Lucian cheered, not moving an inch from Yubelluna's lap. "Did you bring the spicy crackers? Auntie Grayfia said you might bring some from the human world."

Rias's jaw dropped. "Lucian... we were just in a legal battle for the very state of your soul! I've been fighting Grayfia for an hour!"

Lucian blinked, looking entirely too comfortable. "Oh. Cool. So, about those crackers? Because Yube here says the Underworld popcorn is good, but it lacks that human-world kick."

Rias felt a vein throb in her forehead. She realized, with a sinking feeling, that Lucian wasn't a prisoner. He wasn't a fugitive. He was a King. He was perfectly happy being pampered by his Queen and his Aunt, while Issei and Kiba acted as his court jesters.

"You... you total brat," Rias whispered, though she couldn't help but feel a twinge of relief seeing him so relaxed.

Outside, in the manicured gardens of the Silver Annex, two figures were pressed against the reinforced glass window. Akeno Himejima and Asia Argento were peering through the glass like a pair of hungry, stray cats watching a particularly succulent fish in a bowl.

Asia was fogging up the glass with her breath, her silver cross held against her chest. Akeno's eyes were narrowed, a spark of lightning dancing between her fingertips as she watched Yubelluna stroke Lucian's hair.

Flick.

With a simple movement of her wrist, Grayfia pulled the heavy velvet curtains shut, cutting off the view from the garden.

"Interference from external agents is not permitted during tea hours," Grayfia said primly, walking over to Lucian and adjusting the collar of his shirt with a doting, possessive touch.

Rias sat down in the armchair opposite Lucian, defeated by the sheer power of the "Matriarchal Shield."

"Fine," Rias sighed, reaching for a teacup. "One week. But Lucian... when we get back to Kuoh... there isn't a maid in the world who can save you."

Lucian just smiled and took another bite of the apple. "We'll see, Rias. We'll see."

Next Chapter Idea: The week in the Annex becomes a "Training Camp of the Heart." Grayfia begins teaching Lucian the advanced "Ice-Lucifuge" techniques to complement his Power of Destruction, while Rias tries to "seduce" him back to her side during the limited tea hours. Meanwhile, Issei and Kiba are forced to become Grayfia's personal house-cleaning crew as "rent" for staying
