Chapter 30 - Hunter Protocol

Lower Calyx did not celebrate.

There was no victory.

The second Alex stepped back through the portal from the ruined realm, the sky above the district flickered again. The Architect's lattice remained torn open, faint red pulses moving across distant nodes like warning lights.

Alex staggered forward as the portal snapped shut behind him.

Lyra caught him before he hit the ground.

"You absorbed too much," she said sharply.

"I redirected it," he corrected through clenched teeth.

"Same difference."

The reflection stood a few steps away, watching the lattice.

"He's adapting," it said quietly.

Mira looked between them. "The storm guy?"

Alex nodded.

"He's not random. He's learning."

A tremor shook the district.

Not from above.

From below.

Elias's face went pale.

"That's not blind-spot energy."

The ground cracked down the center of the ruined square.

A thin vertical beam of cold white light shot upward.

The fragment in Alex's palm flared violently.

Lyra stepped back.

"That's Architect signal."

Alex's jaw tightened.

"It's deploying something else."

The beam widened.

Reality folded inward at its center.

And a shape began forming.

It wasn't as large as the Arbiter.

Not towering.

Not dramatic.

It was compact.

Humanoid.

Armored in matte-black plates etched with faint silver lines.

Its head tilted slightly as it fully materialized.

No wings.

No rotating structures.

Just stillness.

"Hunter-class unit deployed," the figure stated in a calm voice.

"Target: linked anomaly."

Alex exhaled slowly.

"That's new."

The Hunter didn't move immediately.

It studied.

Its helmet visor flickered faintly, analyzing.

"Dual-instance stabilization detected," it said.

"Adaptive pattern confirmed."

Lyra stepped in front of Alex.

"You want him, you go through me."

The Hunter's head turned slightly.

"Secondary variable irrelevant."

It moved.

Not fast.

Not flashy.

Just efficient.

It appeared in front of Lyra without visible transition.

One hand struck her chest.

She flew across the square and slammed into a broken wall.

Alex surged forward instantly.

The reflection mirrored him.

They attacked from opposite sides.

The Hunter pivoted once.

Both strikes missed.

The Hunter's elbow connected with Alex's ribs.

The impact sent him skidding across the pavement.

The reflection lunged again.

The Hunter caught it mid-motion and slammed it face-first into the ground.

Cracks spread outward.

"Combat efficiency: superior," the Hunter stated calmly.

Mira dragged Lyra to her feet.

"That thing's different," she said.

"It's not overpowered—it's precise."

Elias stepped backward slowly.

"They built something specifically for you."

Alex wiped blood from his mouth and stood again.

The reflection rose beside him.

"Then let's disappoint them."

The Hunter raised its arm.

A thin blade extended from its wrist—not energy.

Not light.

Solid.

Black.

It stepped forward.

Alex didn't wait this time.

He misaligned instantly, vanishing from direct observation.

The Hunter paused for half a second.

Then turned.

It grabbed Alex mid-phase and slammed him into the ground.

Pain exploded through him.

"You cannot escape direct tracking," the Hunter said.

"Architect recalibrated."

The reflection struck from behind.

The Hunter didn't turn.

A second blade extended from its opposite arm and stabbed backward.

The blade pierced through the reflection's shoulder.

It screamed.

Lyra fired a fracture wave.

The Hunter tilted its head.

The wave split around it harmlessly.

"Fracture pattern outdated," it said.

Alex felt rage spike.

This wasn't overwhelming power.

This was targeted adaptation.

He forced himself upright and charged again.

The Hunter moved with minimal motion.

Every strike calculated.

Every defense perfect.

It drove its blade into Alex's side.

Not deep enough to kill.

Just enough to weaken.

"Energy absorption attempt detected," it said calmly.

"Countermeasures active."

The fragment in Alex's palm dimmed slightly.

Lyra's eyes widened.

"It's draining the shard!"

The Hunter twisted the blade and ripped it free.

Alex staggered backward.

Blood hit the pavement.

The reflection lunged in desperation.

The Hunter caught it by the throat.

"Dual-instance redundancy inefficient," it said.

"Deleting secondary."

It raised the blade toward the reflection's chest.

Alex roared and tackled the Hunter mid-strike.

All three crashed through the side of a nearby building.

Concrete exploded outward.

Dust swallowed the street.

Inside the ruined structure, the Hunter rose immediately.

No hesitation.

Alex forced himself up.

The reflection flickered badly now—unstable from the earlier stab.

The Hunter stepped forward.

"Target degradation acceptable," it stated.

"Proceeding to final elimination."

It thrust its blade toward Alex's heart.

Time seemed to slow.

Alex misaligned again—but weaker.

The blade grazed his shoulder instead of piercing his chest.

He countered with a direct strike to the Hunter's visor.

The visor cracked slightly.

For the first time—

The Hunter staggered.

"Structural compromise detected," it said.

The reflection seized the moment and drove its fist into the cracked visor.

The helmet shattered.

Revealing—

A human face.

Not mechanical.

Not artificial.

Human.

Mid-twenties.

Cold expression.

Eyes glowing faint silver.

Lyra froze in shock.

"That's not a construct," she whispered.

Elias stared in horror.

"They're using augmented operators."

The Hunter wiped blood from its lip calmly.

"Organic enhancement optimal for anomaly suppression," it stated.

It lunged again.

Faster this time.

Alex barely avoided the strike.

The reflection wasn't fast enough.

The blade pierced through its chest.

Clean.

The reflection gasped.

Its body began destabilizing violently.

Alex's heart slammed in panic.

"No!"

The Hunter twisted the blade.

"Secondary instance collapse initiated."

MID-TWIST

The Hunter is not a machine.

It's a human enhanced by the Architect—

And it just fatally damaged the reflection.

The reflection fell to its knees.

Its form flickering rapidly.

Lyra screamed and charged.

The Hunter intercepted her and slammed her into a pillar.

The structure collapsed partially.

Mira dragged Elias behind cover as debris rained down.

Alex grabbed the reflection before it hit the floor.

"Stay with me," he said through clenched teeth.

The reflection's voice trembled.

"It adapted too fast."

The Hunter stepped forward.

"No escape vector remains," it said calmly.

It raised the blade again—

This time toward Alex.

The fragment in his palm pulsed weakly.

The lattice above flickered faintly.

The Hunter's eyes glowed brighter.

"Terminate primary."

It moved..

The Hunter's blade came down without hesitation.

Alex moved on instinct.

He twisted his body, dragging the collapsing reflection with him as the blade sliced through the air where his head had been a second earlier. The strike carved clean through a steel support beam behind him as if it were paper.

The building groaned.

Dust fell in sheets from the ceiling.

The reflection coughed, its form flickering violently, the wound in its chest pulsing with unstable energy.

"Leave me," it said through clenched teeth.

Alex ignored it.

The Hunter stepped forward, calm as ever.

"Secondary instance integrity below survival threshold," it stated.

"Primary resistance declining."

Lyra forced herself back onto her feet despite cracked ribs. She launched forward in a burst of fracture energy and slammed into the Hunter from the side.

The Hunter staggered—but only half a step.

It backhanded her into a collapsed column.

Concrete shattered.

She didn't get up this time.

Mira screamed her name.

Elias tried to form a weak alignment barrier, but the Hunter sliced through it effortlessly.

"Outdated authorization signature," it said flatly.

Alex felt something inside him tearing.

Not physically.

Structurally.

The shard in his palm pulsed faintly, reacting to the reflection's instability.

The Hunter advanced again.

"Terminate primary."

Alex placed his hand over the reflection's wound.

The shard flared brighter.

The reflection's eyes widened.

"Don't," it warned weakly. "If you reabsorb me like this—"

"I know."

The Hunter lunged.

Alex slammed his palm into the reflection's chest.

Light exploded outward.

The Hunter's blade pierced through Alex's shoulder—but the energy detonation forced it backward across the room.

The reflection dissolved into raw white energy and surged directly into Alex's body.

The impact threw him onto his back.

The building shook violently.

For a moment—

Silence.

Then Alex screamed.

Outside the structure, red pulses flickered faintly across the sky again.

Not from the storm controller.

From the lattice itself.

The Architect had detected the surge.

Inside the collapsing building, the Hunter stood upright again.

"Dual-instance reabsorption detected," it said calmly.

"Stability compromised."

Alex rose slowly.

But not the same.

His eyes glowed bright white.

The shard was no longer in his palm.

It was embedded beneath his skin, pulsing faintly beneath his collarbone.

The wound in his shoulder sealed instantly.

Lyra, half-conscious, lifted her head.

"Alex…" she whispered.

He didn't answer.

His breathing was steady.

Controlled.

Different.

The Hunter tilted its head slightly.

"Anomaly density increased," it observed.

"Escalation authorized."

Its armor shifted subtly, new silver lines forming across its chest.

Alex stepped forward.

The floor cracked beneath him—not from weight.

From pressure.

The air around him distorted in faint ripples.

"You adapted," Alex said quietly.

The Hunter raised its blade.

"So did I."

It attacked.

The strike should have connected.

It didn't.

The blade stopped an inch from Alex's throat.

Frozen.

The Hunter pushed harder.

The blade wouldn't move.

Alex's hand was raised casually.

He wasn't holding the blade.

Reality was.

The Hunter recalculated instantly.

"New capability detected."

Alex twisted his wrist slightly.

The blade snapped in half.

The Hunter immediately extended a second blade from its other arm and slashed.

Alex stepped sideways without actually moving.

The strike passed through empty space where he had been a fraction of a second ago.

He reappeared behind the Hunter.

And drove his fist into its spine.

The impact sent the Hunter through two walls and out into the open square.

The building partially collapsed behind them.

Civilians scrambled away from the fight.

Mira dragged Lyra to safety as debris rained down.

Alex stepped out of the rubble.

Slow.

Focused.

The Hunter rose from the crater in the pavement.

Armor cracked.

Blood visible at the edge of its mouth.

But it smiled faintly.

"Improvement confirmed," it said.

Alex narrowed his eyes.

"You talk too much."

He launched forward.

This time, the Hunter barely kept up.

They collided midair.

Shockwaves blasted outward with each strike.

The Hunter's blade grazed Alex's ribs.

The wound closed instantly.

Alex grabbed the Hunter's arm and crushed it.

Metal and bone snapped simultaneously.

The Hunter responded by driving a hidden spike from its elbow straight into Alex's abdomen.

The spike bent.

Didn't penetrate.

The Hunter's eyes flickered.

"Defensive density exceeding projection."

Alex headbutted the Hunter hard enough to shatter what remained of its visor.

The augmented human beneath stared at him in disbelief.

For the first time—

Fear flickered across its face.

"You're not just blind spot linked anymore," it whispered.

Alex didn't deny it.

He grabbed the Hunter by the throat and lifted it off the ground.

The lattice above flickered violently.

The Architect was watching.

The Hunter activated something internally.

A faint red glow pulsed beneath its armor.

Alex felt it instantly.

Storm energy.

His eyes hardened.

"You're connected to him," he said.

The Hunter smiled faintly despite the pressure crushing its throat.

"Storm controller initiated Hunter augmentation trial," it said weakly.

"Data collection successful."

Alex's grip tightened.

"So you're his test run."

The Hunter's remaining hand clamped onto Alex's wrist.

"If I fall," it whispered, "he improves."

The red glow intensified.

The Hunter's body began destabilizing.

Not collapsing—

Overloading.

Lyra forced herself to stand.

"Alex!" she shouted. "It's going to detonate!"

Alex didn't release it.

Instead, he focused.

The shard beneath his skin flared.

He forced misalignment inward.

Instead of absorbing the storm energy—

He redirected it.

The red glow surged upward from the Hunter's body like a beam.

It shot straight into the lattice.

The sky crackled.

The Hunter screamed.

Then went still.

Its body dropped lifeless to the pavement.

Silence fell across Lower Calyx again.

Alex released the corpse and stepped back slowly.

Lyra approached carefully.

"You're different," she said.

"I had to be," he replied.

Mira looked at the shattered district.

"So that's it?"

Alex looked up.

The lattice above flickered faintly.

Red pulses moved again—farther away this time.

"No," he said quietly.

The air shifted.

A faint ripple passed across the square.

Not from above.

From behind him.

Alex turned slowly.

A portal opened.

Not golden like the Architect.

Not red like the storm.

Black.

And controlled.

The storm controller stepped through.

Calm.

Uninjured.

Smiling.

He glanced at the Hunter's corpse on the ground.

"Good," he said lightly.

"It lasted longer than the prototypes."

Lyra's blood ran cold.

"You built him."

The storm controller nodded casually.

"Field test," he said.

"And now I know exactly how much pressure it takes to break you."

Alex stepped forward.

"You want round two?"

The storm controller tilted his head.

"No," he said calmly.

"I want escalation."

He raised one hand.

The red pulses across the lattice flared simultaneously.

Across multiple realms—

Blind spots ignited.

Entire regions destabilized at once.

Alex felt it hit him like a tidal wave.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Simultaneous signals.

Lyra grabbed his arm as he staggered.

"What did you do?" she demanded.

The storm controller smiled wider.

"You forced the Architect to mark you globally," he said.

"So I gave it something global to watch."

The portal behind him widened.

"Catch me," he added softly.

And stepped backward through it.

The portal snapped shut.

Alex dropped to one knee.

The flood of blind-spot signals slammed into him from every direction.

He clenched his fists.

The shard beneath his skin pulsed violently.

Lyra knelt beside him.

"How many?" she asked.

Alex lifted his head slowly.

His eyes glowed faint white.

"Too many," he whispered.

The storm controller didn't attack Lower Calyx again.

He activated blind spots across the multiverse simultaneously—

Overloading Alex's link.

This is no longer a district war.

It's a multiversal hunt.

And Alex is the trigger point.
