Chapter 13: The Silk Hoodie and the Stone Puzzle

[POV : Tess, The Weaver]

Tess did not sleep well.

It was hard to sleep when a Monster King was lying five meters away from you.

The sun was just starting to peek over the trees, turning the sky a pale, bruised purple. Tess huddled in her corner near the woodpile, keeping all eight of her legs tucked in tight. She watched the black panther, Noir. He was asleep, his chest rising and falling slowly. Even in his sleep, the air around him felt heavy, like a storm about to break.

'Scary. So scary,' Tess thought, shivering.

She looked at the Human, Kael.

He was sleeping near the fire pit, wrapped in a thin, torn piece of cloth. It used to be a shirt, but now it was just rags. The forest morning was cold—a biting, damp chill that soaked into your bones.

The Human shivered in his sleep. His teeth chattered. Click-click-click.

Tess froze.

'If the Human freezes, he dies,' she reasoned. 'If he dies, the Monster King will be angry. If the Monster King is angry... he eats the spider.'

Panic flooded her small brain. She had to fix this. She had to be useful.

She looked at the Human's rags. Then she looked at her own spinnerets.

'I fix,' Tess decided. 'I make warm.'

She stood up quietly, her legs moving like silent needles. She didn't have a pattern. She didn't know what "fashion" was. She just knew the shape of the Human. Two arms. One head. Torso.

She began to pump her abdomen.

Thwip. Swish.

The silk came out thick and white. Usually, she used sticky silk to catch bugs. But for this, she used her "Nursery Silk"—the soft, fluffy stuff she used to wrap her eggs. It was warmer than wool and stronger than steel.

Her front legs moved like a blur. She wasn't just spinning; she was knitting. Over, under, loop, pull.

'Make it warm. Make it soft. Please don't eat me.'

[POV : Kael]

"Brrr... damn it."

Kael woke up freezing. The fire had died down to embers during the night, and the morning mist was soaking into his clothes.

"Note to self," Kael grumbled, sitting up and rubbing his arms. "Build a blanket next. Or steal Noir's fur."

He reached for his water skin, but his hand bumped into something soft.

"Huh?"

Lying on the log next to him was a pile of white fabric.

It wasn't just a pile. It was... clothes?

Kael picked it up. It was a shirt. well, sort of. It looked like a thick, oversized hoodie, but without a zipper. The material was insane—it felt like cashmere mixed with clouds. It was pure white and shimmered slightly in the morning light.

"What on earth..."

He looked around. Noir was still asleep (lazy cat). But over by the woodpile, Tess was awake.

The giant spider was watching him intensely. She was shifting her weight from leg to leg, looking nervous.

"Tess?" Kael held up the white shirt. "Did you... make this?"

Tess did a little tap dance with her front legs. Tap-tap-tap. She pointed at him, then at the shirt.

"Holy shit," Kael whispered. "You're a genius."

He stripped off his ragged waiter shirt—which was basically just holes held together by sweat—and pulled on the spider-silk hoodie.

It was a bit tight in the shoulders and loose in the stomach (Tess obviously didn't know human anatomy perfectly), but the moment it touched his skin, Kael groaned in pleasure.

"Oh my god. It's so warm."

It was instantly insulating. The chill of the morning vanished.

[System Notification]

[Item Acquired: Weaver's Silk Tunic (Masterwork)]

[Defense: +15]

[Effect: Temperature Regulation (Minor)]

"Plus fifteen defense?" Kael laughed. "This shirt is stronger than my skin."

He walked over to Tess. The spider flinched, pulling back.

"Hey, hey, relax," Kael said softly. He reached out and, very slowly, patted one of her furry legs. "Thank you, Tess. This is amazing. Seriously."

Tess froze at the touch. Then, realizing she wasn't being hit, she relaxed. She let out a small, happy chitter sound.

"Alright team!" Kael clapped his hands, feeling energized by his new gear. "Breakfast, then work. Today, we build the chimney. I am not sleeping in the cold again."

[The Construction Site: Mid-Day]

"Mixing cement," Kael grunted, "is a pain in the ass."

He was standing by his invention, the Forest Mixer 3000. It was creaking loudly as he turned the handle.

Squelch. Slosh. Grind.

Inside the barrel, the river clay, sand, and water were churning into a thick, grey paste. It was heavy work. Every turn of the handle required his full Strength stat.

"Noir, you sure you don't want a turn?" Kael panted.

Noir was lying on the unfinished floor of the house, enjoying the sun. He opened one yellow eye, looked at the mud, looked at Kael, and closed the eye again.

"Useless cat," Kael muttered affectionately. "Just wait until I make a sofa. You're not allowed on it."

(Kael knew that was a lie. Noir would definitely be on the sofa.)

"Okay, batch one is ready."

Kael tipped the barrel. The grey mortar plonked into a wooden bucket.

Now came the hard part. The Chimney.

He had built a wooden scaffold inside the house so he could reach the roof. He dragged the heavy granite stones—the ones they found yesterday—into the living room.

"System, Analysis on this rock."

[Granite Block. Weight: 45kg.]

"Forty-five kilos. Piece of cake," Kael lied to himself.

He picked up the rock. It was heavy, rough, and awkward. He slapped a layer of his homemade cement onto the foundation stones he had laid earlier.

Splat.

He heaved the rock on top.

Thud.

"Stay there," Kael warned the rock. He used the handle of his axe to tap it into place, checking it with his Carpenter's Square. "Perfect."

He fell into a rhythm.

Scoop cement. Splat. Lift rock. Groan. Thud. Tap-tap-tap.

It was slow. His arms started to burn. The granite was unforgiving. If a rock wasn't flat, he had to use his chisel to chip away pieces until it fit.

Clink... Clink... Clink...

"Why did I want a fireplace?" Kael wiped sweat from his forehead with his new silk sleeve. "I could have just used a space heater. Oh wait, no electricity. Fuck."

He looked at his progress. The chimney was rising. It was ugly—the stones were uneven and the cement oozed out the sides—but it looked strong. It looked like something a dwarf would build.

"It has character," Kael decided.

[POV : Noir]

Noir watched the Human stack rocks.

It was fascinating.

The Human had magic. Noir had smelled it. He had seen the Human create iron out of thin air. So why was he lifting rocks with his bare hands? Why was he covering himself in grey mud?

'Humans are weird,' Noir concluded.

He looked over at the Spider. Tess was currently in the corner of the room, spinning more silk. She was making... pants? Yes, she was trying to make pants to match the shirt.

Noir huffed. The Spider was weak, but she was trying hard. She was useful.

Noir stood up and stretched. His back popped.

He walked over to the pile of granite rocks Kael was using. Kael was currently up on the wooden scaffold, looking down.

"Hey buddy," Kael called down. "Don't scratch those. I need them."

Noir looked at a rock that was shaped weirdly. It had a big lump on one side that would make it hard to stack.

Noir extended one claw.

Shhhk.

He sliced the lump off the rock like it was cheese. The cut was perfectly smooth.

Kael stared. "Show off."

Noir flicked his tail and walked away. 'You're welcome.'

[Late Afternoon]

The chimney was done.

It stood like a stone spine against the north wall, going all the way up past where the roof would be.

"Okay," Kael breathed, hands on his hips. "The hard part is over. Now... the roof."

He had already cut the rafters—long, straight beams of Cedar.

Climbing up the walls was easy with his Agility. He balanced on the top of the wall log, six meters in the air.

The view was incredible.

From up here, he could see the whole clearing. He saw his campfire, the stream sparkling in the distance, and the endless ocean of green trees.

"I own this," Kael whispered. "This is mine."

For the first time in his life, he didn't feel like a cog in a machine. He wasn't a waiter serving food to rich assholes. He wasn't a student failing his exams.

He was Kael. The Builder.

"Alright, no getting emotional," he shook his head. "Let's get this wood up."

He used a rope to haul the beams up one by one.

Heave. Grunt. Clatter.

He notched them into the top of the wall logs. Then he climbed to the peak—the ridge beam—and nailed them in.

Well, not nailed. He used wooden pegs he had carved earlier.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The mallet echoed through the forest.

Tess stopped spinning to watch him. Noir stopped licking his paw.

They watched their Human balance on a thin beam, high in the air, hammering the sky into shape.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the skeleton of the roof was finished. It looked like the ribs of a giant beast, protecting the space below.

Kael climbed down, his legs shaking from exhaustion. He was covered in stone dust, sawdust, and dried mud.

He dropped onto the grass next to Noir.

"We did it," Kael wheezed. "The shell is done."

He looked up at the house. It was massive. It was sturdy. It had a fireplace.

"Tomorrow," Kael said, closing his eyes. "We put the shingles on the roof. And then... we move in."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the Black Stone. It was warm to the touch, vibrating slightly.

"And then," Kael whispered to the stone, "we figure out what the hell you are."

He didn't notice, but as he held the stone, a tiny spark of purple electricity jumped from his finger to the rock.

Zzt.

The stone pulsed once, like a heartbeat, and then went dark again.

Kael sat up. "Did you see that?"

Noir was staring at the stone, his fur standing on end. He let out a low growl.

"Relax," Kael put the stone away. "It's just static. Probably from the silk shirt."

He laid back down. "Man, I'm hungry. Tess! Did you finish those pants? My ass is freezing."

Tess scurried over, holding a pair of lumpy, white spider-silk sweatpants.

Kael laughed. "You're the best."
