Chapter 28 - THREE IN THE DARK

Robellia could sense there was something Genevieve couldn't say in front of Roselyn. Robellia gave her mother a look that said, " This isn't over. "I'll escort Gene to her room. Don't bother waiting for me. I'll spend the night in her room," Robellia said, unlocking the door. Just as she was about to open the door, Genevieve held her wrist, her eyes trying to warn her of the imminent danger that waited out of that door. Robellia held her hand and gave her a reassuring look.

Robellia opened the door and stepped out. She turned to look at the cowering Genevieve. "There is nothing here, Gene."

Genevieve seemed confused as she worriedly followed her out. To her surprise, the hallway was absolutely normal. The candles were lit. " The darkness gone, "how?" Genevieve breathed. "I swear it was right here....." Genevieve stopped talking as Robellia indicated for her to stay silent and indicated for her to close the door.

Robellia turned towards the hallway as she could still sense its presence lingering in the air. If she could feel it, so could Roselyn. She just hoped her mother wouldn't come out. "Where did you first see it?" Robellia spoke in a hushed tone

"I don't know, it's been following me for a while, but it got worse when I got to my room. I could feel it right next to me." Genevieve was literally panicking

Robellia walked towards Genevieve's room, and with every step, she could feel its presence getting stronger. She opened the door of the bedroom. The room was dark, too dark. Stepping inside, she felt the temperature drop by a few degrees. Her eyes scanned the room as she subconsciously held her ring ready to take it off at any second.

Genevieve followed her closely, "It was by that corner."

When Robellia turned to look at the corner that was close to the cupboard, she saw a looming shadow. Though the entire room was dark, the voidness in that area felt heavier. Robellia looked at Genevieve, "I am going to take off my ring. You know what happens after. If things get bad, you put it on me. And if it goes for the worse, you run out of the room and lock the door behind you. Do you understand, Gene?"

Genevieve had a bad feeling about having to lock Robellia in the room with whatever that was. "Liya, I....."

Robellia had already taken off the ring, and it fell to the floor. The sound of it clinking was all Robellia could hear. Robellia let out a tiny gasp as she felt the energy surge through her. She could barely control her own body. She felt numb and dizzy and could hear Genevieve's voice at a distance. She forced her eyes to focus on whatever was before her, and though she felt everything spin. She could still make out the dark figure coming towards them. She could hear its deafening growls right by her ear.

Robellia covered her ears. She could feel Genevieve's hands pulling at her to move away. Though she couldn't hear Genevieve's voice, she was sure she was desperately trying to call her. Robellia groaned in pain as the growling got louder. Closing her eyes, she screamed, "ENOUGH!" and just like that, everything went still.

Robellia slowly opened her eyes as she panted. The dark figure had retreated to the corner. Oddly, Robellia could sense its fear.

"Are you okay?" Genevieve asked worriedly as she held Robellia by her shoulders.

Robellia nodded, "I'm fine." Her gaze went back to the dark figure.

Genevieve followed her gaze, "What did you do to it?"

"You can still see it?" Robellia asked just to be sure. Genevieve nodded.

"Do you feel it? Do you feel it's fear?" Robellia asked as she walked slowly towards it.

"I do. But I don't think it's a good idea to walk towards that thing." Genevieve warned.

Robellia stopped walking just as she was close enough, "What are you?"

"Oh yes! Great idea, Liya. Talk to the darkness in the corner." Genevieve spoke with every bit of sarcasm.

"I asked you a question. Can you not speak?" Robellia threatened it.

Forgive this humble servant, Your Highness. They could hear the thing's deep voice in their heads. Robellia turned to Genevieve to be sure she heard it too. I am your servant. the great darkness that lurks in the shadows. I believe you have summoned me.

"I did not summon you. Why were you after Genevieve?" Robellia looked puzzled.

I would not be here if you had not summoned me the day you chose this mortal to be your anchor, myQueen. The darkness replied, and I was not after the anchor. I was just keeping an eye on her. Making sure she doesn't get into any trouble. Though I detest their kind, you are linked to her. Harm to her could severely weaken your power.

"Did that thing just call you queen?" Genevieve was in absolute awe.

"I am not your Queen, and I believe we are safe; we do not need the protection. I must have summoned you by accident last night. You are free to go." Robellia ordered.

I believe I can not, your highness. It appears I, too, am bound to both of you. The darkness answered.

Robellia sighed. This was just another problem. If her mother got a whiff of this thing. She didn't want to think even for a second of what she'd do. "You can't stay here. Mother would go ballistic if she ever found out. And for goodness sake, I am not your Queen."

I am quite good at camouflage; she won't be able to even guess my presence. Running from destiny doesn't change it. You are a Queen and have been from the moment of your birth into this world. It would be an honor to serve you, Your Highness.

Genevieve slowly walked towards it, "I'll call you Shadow, but I do have a request. Can you not.... You know, creep up on me. That stunt scared the hell out of me."

As you please, anchor. Shadow responded obediently.

Robellia sighed, "I don't remember agreeing to him staying."

"Come on, Liya. It's kind of amazing having a supernatural bodyguard." Genevieve pleaded

"What about mother? Gene, when she figures out about our connection to this thing. She is going to do everything in her power to eliminate you, a human with knowledge of our existence..."

"Hold up. You are lowering my rank. I am an anchor. Just so you know, and Shadow just said he is a master of camouflage. Think about it, if we summoned up Shadow, what else could we have summoned up? He could protect us." Genevieve tried to convince Robellia.

Robellia sighed, "Fine."
