Maya stirred almost immediately, her brows drawing together as she slowly opened her eyes. For several seconds, she remained disoriented, still caught between sleep and wakefulness, until her gaze finally settled on the older woman standing beside the window.
"Ma'am...?"
"Finally," the woman replied coldly. "I was beginning to wonder whether you intended to sleep through the entire day."
Maya blinked several times, trying to clear the heaviness from her mind before slowly pushing herself upright. The movement sent a dull ache through her body, and she instinctively pressed one hand against the mattress as she paused to steady herself.
"What time is it?" she asked quietly.
"Late enough that you should have been awake hours ago."
Maya looked toward the window and then back at the woman, still struggling to understand why she was being spoken to with such hostility. "I'm still feeling weak."
