The same warmth and heaviness were gradually settling over Dakota as well, although she remained unaware of the reason her eyelids suddenly felt so difficult to keep open.
Kade noticed the change almost immediately. His gaze moved from Takoda to Dakota, and a knowing smile appeared on his face.
"The herbs are taking effect."
Dakota blinked slowly, trying to focus on him. "What?"
"Nothing."
He reached over and gently adjusted the blanket around Takoda before looking back at Dakota. "You should lie back and rest for a while."
"I don't feel tired."
The statement was immediately followed by a soft yawn, completely betraying her.
Kade's lips curved upward. "Of course you don't."
Dakota gave him a sleepy glare, but she no longer had the energy to argue. She shifted farther beneath the covers and settled against the pillows, keeping one arm protectively around Takoda as the little girl grew increasingly relaxed against her side.
"She looks so peaceful," Dakota murmured.
"She is."
