Chapter 30 - CHAPTER 30

— The Life That Was Taken

Silence didn't leave the room.

It stayed.

Heavy. Waiting.

Freya's question still lingered between them—

"…then who died instead?"

Noah didn't answer.

Not immediately.

Because some truths—

Once spoken—

Couldn't be undone.

Freya slowly pulled away from his hold.

Her hands were still trembling.

"Answer me," she said, her voice softer this time… but more dangerous.

Noah looked at her.

Really looked.

And for the first time—

There was no distance left in his eyes.

Only conflict.

Only guilt.

"…no one died," he said finally.

Freya frowned.

"That's not possible."

She shook her head.

"You just said I was supposed to die."

"I was."

"Then someone had to—"

"No."

His voice cut through hers.

Firm.

Certain.

"I didn't replace your life with someone else's."

Freya's breath slowed.

Confusion took over fear.

"Then what did you do?"

Noah didn't respond.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

Because the answer wasn't human.

Grace stepped forward quietly.

"He didn't take a life," she said.

Freya looked at her instantly.

"Then what did he take?"

A pause.

And then—

Grace answered.

"His own ending."

Silence.

Freya's mind couldn't process it.

"…what?"

Noah looked away.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"He was never meant to stay," Grace continued. "His existence had a fixed point. A moment where it would end."

Freya's heart began to beat faster again.

"And he… removed it."

The words landed slowly.

But when they did—

They hit.

Hard.

Freya stepped back.

"You're saying…"

Her voice trembled.

"…you gave up your death?"

Noah didn't look at her.

But he didn't deny it either.

"That's not how it works," she whispered.

"It isn't," Grace said.

"That's why it broke everything."

Freya's chest tightened.

"Then why are you still here?"

Noah finally looked at her again.

And this time—

There was something unfamiliar in his expression.

Something almost… empty.

"Because I don't belong anywhere anymore."

The words were quiet.

But they echoed.

Freya shook her head slowly.

"That doesn't make sense…"

"It's not supposed to."

Tears gathered in her eyes again.

"So you just… exist?"

Noah gave a faint, almost bitter smile.

"Something like that."

Freya looked at him like she was seeing him for the first time.

Not just as someone familiar—

But as someone… broken.

"Why would you do that?" she asked.

This time—

Her voice wasn't angry.

It wasn't confused.

It was hurt.

Noah didn't answer.

Because the real answer—

She wasn't ready for.

Grace watched them both silently.

Then she spoke again.

"Because you chose it."

Freya's eyes widened.

"What?"

Noah's expression changed instantly.

"Grace—"

But she didn't stop.

"You think he made that decision alone?" she continued.

Freya's heartbeat rose again.

"I don't understand—"

"You asked him to."

Silence.

Everything stopped.

Freya stared at her.

"…no."

Her voice came out barely a breath.

"I would never—"

"You did."

The certainty in Grace's voice made it worse.

Freya stepped back again.

Her head shook slowly.

"No… I don't remember that."

"Of course you don't."

Noah's voice came in low.

Sharp.

"Because I made sure you wouldn't."

Freya turned to him.

Her eyes filled instantly.

"You erased it…?"

He didn't answer.

Because yes—

He did.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"You erased the moment where I chose… you?"

Silence.

That silence—

Was the answer.

Tears slipped down her face.

"That wasn't your decision to make…"

"I know."

His voice was quiet.

But steady.

"I didn't do it for me."

Freya's hands clenched.

"Then for who?"

"For you."

She laughed weakly.

Broken.

"How is that for me?"

Noah stepped closer.

But stopped halfway.

Because he knew—

He didn't have the right anymore.

"Because if you remembered," he said, "you would've stayed."

Her breath hitched.

"And you weren't supposed to."

The words hurt.

More than anything else.

Freya looked at him—

Really looked.

And suddenly—

She understood something.

Not everything.

But enough.

"You didn't save me…"

Her voice trembled.

"You forced me to live."

Noah closed his eyes for a brief second.

Because that—

Was true.

Grace spoke softly from behind.

"And now the balance is asking for its answer."

Freya wiped her tears roughly.

"What answer?"

Grace looked at her.

Directly.

"The one you gave once."

Freya's heart dropped.

"And what if I don't remember it?"

Grace's expression softened.

"Then you'll choose again."

Silence.

Freya looked down at her bracelet.

It glowed faintly.

Warm.

Alive.

Then she looked back at Noah.

Her voice was quiet now.

But steady.

"…and if I choose differently this time?"

Noah didn't respond.

But his eyes—

They did.

For the first time—

There was fear.

Real fear.

Not of the shadow.

Not of fate.

But of her answer.

Grace turned slightly toward the window.

The night outside had deepened.

"You won't have much time," she said.

Freya frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Grace didn't look back.

"Because something else has started moving."

A pause.

Then—

"Something that doesn't wait for choices."

The air shifted again.

Slightly.

Not like before.

But enough.

Freya felt it.

That same presence.

Faint.

Distant.

Watching.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"…it's still here, isn't it?"

Noah's expression darkened.

"No."

But even he—

Didn't sound convinced.

Grace finally looked back at them.

And said quietly—

"You asked who died instead of you."

Freya's breath caught again.

"I told you—no one did," Noah said.

Grace didn't deny it.

But she didn't agree either.

Because then—

She added:

"Not yet."

Silence.

Cold.

Unsettling.

Freya's heart stopped for a second.

"What does that mean…?"

But no one answered.

Because somewhere—

Far from that room—

Something had already begun.

And this time—

It wasn't waiting for permission.

No one would have died until you both remembered and rewritten that fate, but now its something strange. Happening what wasn't supposed to.

Yet freya didn't know that the one who made the choice of erasure of memory is she herself ~
