[The Chunin Exam Finals]
The roaring of the crowd was deafening.
The central arena of Konoha was packed to the brim. Feudal Lords, wealthy merchants, and shinobi from allied nations filled the massive circular stands. The sun beat down on the dirt arena floor, baking the earth.
Up in the Kage box, the Third Hokage sat next to the Fourth Kazekage.
Or rather, Orochimaru in a very convincing Kazekage skin-suit, I thought, looking up at the VIP box from the competitors' tunnel. I can practically smell the snake oil from here.
"Hey, Kenji!"
Naruto slapped my back, nearly sending me stumbling. He was practically vibrating with energy. The month with Jiraiya had done wonders for him. He stood a little taller, his chakra felt denser, and there was a confident glint in his blue eyes.
"Don't touch the silk, Naruto," I brushed my shoulder. I wasn't wearing the standard Genin uniform. I had commissioned a custom, deep-crimson, sleeveless combat tunic lined with gold thread, paired with loose-fitting black hakama pants. It screamed 'rich and untouchable.'
"I'm gonna win this whole thing!" Naruto cheered. "Ero-Sennin taught me some awesome stuff! And I didn't even have to peep to learn it!"
"Good for you," I yawned. "Just don't lose to Neji. I have ten thousand Ryo riding on you."
"Will the competitors please enter the arena!" Genma Shiranui, the new proctor (complete with his trademark senbon needle in his mouth), announced over the loudspeakers.
We walked out into the blinding sunlight.
The crowd erupted.
I stood in line with the others. Neji looked stoic. Gaara looked homicidal, his sand swirling restlessly around his feet. Shikamaru looked like he wanted to take a nap. Temari was smirking confidently, her giant fan resting on her shoulder.
Sasuke, unsurprisingly, was nowhere to be seen. Fashionably late, as usual.
Genma read the rules. It was simple: fight until someone dies, gives up, or the proctor stops the match.
"First match," Genma announced. "Naruto Uzumaki versus Neji Hyuga. Everyone else, up to the waiting balconies."
****
Genma Shiranui, the proctor with the perpetual senbon needle in his mouth, dropped his hand.
"Begin!"
Naruto didn't waste a single second. He charged head-first, pulling out three kunai and hurling them at the Hyuga prodigy.
Neji didn't even blink. He casually stepped to the side, letting the blades bury themselves in the dirt. His pale eyes stared right through Naruto.
"You are a fool," Neji stated, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent arena. "A failure charging at a genius. Destiny has already decided the outcome."
"Shut up about destiny!" Naruto roared, forming his signature hand seal. "Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
POOF! POOF! POOF!
Two dozen Narutos materialized, kicking up a cloud of dust. They swarmed Neji from all sides, a chaotic wave of orange.
Up on the balcony, I leaned against the railing, activating my [Observation Haki] just enough to see the chakra flow.
"This is going to hurt," I muttered, taking a bite of an apple.
Neji shifted his stance. The veins bulged around his temples. "Byakugan!"
The clones descended. Neji moved like water. He didn't use brute force; he used precision. His hands blurred, striking with open palms. Tap. Tap. Tap. Every single strike hit a chakra point. Clones popped into smoke one after another. It was a massacre disguised as a dance.
The real Naruto burst from the smoke, throwing a wild right hook.
Neji caught the punch with ease, his fingers digging into Naruto's wrist. "I can see your chakra network, failure. And I am going to shut it down."
"Eight Trigrams: Sixty-Four Palms!"
Neji became a blur. Two palms. Four palms. Eight palms. Sixteen. Thirty-two. Sixty-four!
His fingers jabbed into Naruto's torso, arms, and legs with terrifying speed and devastating accuracy. The final strike sent Naruto flying backward, crashing hard into the dirt.
The crowd gasped. Hinata, sitting in the stands with her team, gripped the railing in terror.
"It's over," Neji turned his back on the fallen blonde. "Your chakra points are closed. You cannot even stand. The proctor should call the match."
Naruto lay there, gasping for air. But then, his fingers dug into the dirt.
"I... I don't give up..." Naruto wheezed, his legs shaking as he forced himself to his knees. "I'm going to prove you wrong... I'm going to be Hokage!"
Neji glared over his shoulder. "Why do you fight your fate? You are trash."
"Because," Naruto looked up, a fierce, primal glint in his blue eyes. "Someone once told me I was a failure. But I'm going to change that!"
Naruto closed his eyes.
From my spot on the balcony, my Haki flared. The hairs on my arms stood up.
Here it comes, I thought, gripping the railing. The cheat code.
A heavy, suffocating, distinctly evil chakra began to leak from Naruto's pores. It wasn't blue. It was a bubbling, toxic red. It swirled around him, visibly distorting the air, healing his bruised network by sheer, brute-force pressure. The closed chakra points were literally blown open by the demonic energy.
Neji's Byakugan widened in sheer horror. "What... what is that chakra?!"
Naruto shot forward. He didn't run; he exploded off the ground, leaving a crater behind. He was twice as fast as before.
He threw a barrage of punches. Neji, the untouchable genius, was suddenly on the defensive, forced to backpedal as the red chakra burned his hands upon impact.
"I won't lose!" Neji screamed, planting his feet and spinning rapidly, releasing chakra from every pore in his body. "Eight Trigrams: Palm Rotation (Kaiten)!"
A massive, spinning dome of blue chakra erupted around Neji, creating an absolute defense.
Naruto didn't stop. He channeled the red Nine-Tails chakra into his fist and punched the spinning dome head-on.
BOOM!
The collision sounded like a bomb going off. The shockwave ripped through the arena, sending a massive cloud of dust and debris high into the air. The crowd shielded their eyes.
Silence descended.
As the dust cleared, two small craters were visible.
In one, Neji was standing, panting heavily, his clothes torn but his body relatively intact.
In the other crater, a few yards away, Naruto lay face down, completely motionless. The red chakra was gone.
"Heh," Neji coughed, wiping blood from his lip. "A failure to the end."
Genma walked forward, raising his hand to call the match.
"Wait for it," I whispered to Sakura, who was crying next to me.
Suddenly, the ground directly beneath Neji's feet erupted.
CRASH!
Naruto burst from the dirt like a geyser. The "Naruto" lying in the crater disappeared in a puff of smoke—a shadow clone used as a decoy.
Neji looked down, his Byakugan completely blindsided by the underground assault.
Naruto poured every last ounce of his remaining strength into a devastating uppercut that connected squarely with Neji's chin.
The Hyuga genius was launched into the air, his eyes rolling into the back of his head. He crashed to the ground in a heap, completely unconscious.
Naruto stood over him, battered, bloody, and victorious.
"Winner: Naruto Uzumaki!" Genma declared.
The stadium erupted into a deafening roar.
My apologies! You're completely right. I hit the fast-forward button a bit too hard there. Those fights are iconic, and brushing past them does the story a disservice.
Let's rewind the tape and give those main character battles the detailed spotlight they deserve, all seen through Kenji's front-row perspective. I'll keep Kenji on the sidelines for now until you give the green light for his match.
Here is the expanded, detailed version of the first two matches.
[The Chunin Exam Finals - Match 1: Naruto vs. Neji]

The stadium erupted into a deafening roar.
"Plot armor," I smirked, tossing the core of my apple over the railing. "The strongest jutsu of them all."
[Match 4: Shikamaru Nara vs. Temari]
(Skipping Shino's default win over Kankuro).
"Match Four!" Genma announced. "Shikamaru Nara versus Temari of the Sand!"
Temari leaped from the balcony, gliding down on her giant iron fan and landing gracefully in the arena. She looked up, smirking confidently.
Shikamaru was still leaning against the wall on the balcony, looking up at the sky.
"What a drag," Shikamaru sighed, scratching his head. "Look at those clouds. They're just floating there. So free. I wish I was a cloud. I don't want to fight a girl. It's too much work."
"Get down there, you lazy bum!" Asuma (his sensei) shoved him from behind.
"Whoa!" Shikamaru tumbled over the railing, landing flat on his back in the dirt.
The crowd laughed. Temari sneered.
"This is the guy who beat Kin?" Temari scoffed, resting her fan on her shoulder. "This will be over in ten seconds."
Shikamaru slowly got to his feet, dusting himself off. He formed his signature hand seal, bringing his fingers together in a circle.
"Begin!"
Temari swung her fan immediately, unleashing a fierce gust of wind. "Wind Scythe Jutsu!"
Shikamaru didn't try to block it. He ran, diving behind a cluster of trees that had grown in the arena during the preliminaries.
"Hiding won't save you!" Temari laughed, calculating the distance. She planted her fan in the ground. "Your Shadow Possession Jutsu has a maximum range. I measured it during your last fight. As long as I stay out of the shadows, you can't touch me."
She was right. Shikamaru's shadow stretched out from behind the tree, creeping across the sunlit dirt, but it stopped a few feet short of Temari's toes.
"Smart girl," I noted from the balcony. "But she's playing checkers, and he's playing 4D chess."
Shikamaru sat cross-legged behind the tree, closing his eyes and putting his fingertips together. He was thinking. Hard.
Temari kept swinging her fan, slicing the trees to pieces, forcing Shikamaru to keep moving. He dodged, weaving through the debris, extending his shadow over and over again, seemingly missing every time.
"He's panicking," Sakura said next to me. "He's just throwing his shadow around randomly!"
"Look closer, Pinky," I pointed at the ground.
Shikamaru's shadow was stretching... but the sun was moving. And as the sun moved, the shadows cast by the high walls of the arena were growing longer.
Temari noticed it too late. She stepped back to avoid a direct shadow attack, only to realize she was backing right into the lengthening shadow of the stadium wall.
"He was stalling!" Temari gasped, jumping backward.
But Shikamaru didn't stop there. He threw a kunai wrapped in his own jacket into the air, catching it on the stadium wall. The jacket acted like a parachute, casting a new, artificial shadow onto the ground right behind Temari.
His shadow connected with the parachute's shadow, stretching the limit of his jutsu just enough to reach her.
Snag.
Temari froze mid-step. Her body locked up completely.
From across the arena, Shikamaru stood up, mirroring her exact posture. He had caught her in the Shadow Possession Jutsu.
The crowd went wild. The tactical brilliance was undeniable. He had manipulated the sun, the terrain, and her own movements to lay the perfect trap.
Shikamaru slowly raised his hand. Temari's hand was forced to copy the motion.
"It's over," Shikamaru panted, sweat dripping down his face. "I win."
Temari gritted her teeth, unable to move a muscle.
Shikamaru looked up at the proctor.
"I forfeit."
The entire stadium went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop.
"Say what now?" Genma blinked.
"I forfeit," Shikamaru repeated, releasing the jutsu and dropping his arms with a heavy sigh. "I've thought through the next two hundred moves. I can win, but I'm completely out of chakra. Fighting anymore is just... a drag."
He turned his back on the furious Sand Kunoichi and walked toward the exit tunnel.
"Winner... Temari!" Genma announced, shaking his head.
"Absolute legend," I chuckled, clapping slowly. "The man just flexed his IQ on the entire ninja world and then went to take a nap. You have to respect the hustle."
Genma looked at his roster board, then up at the balcony.
"Next match. Since Dosu Kinuta forfeited, Kenji Sato receives a bye.
Match Five: Temari of the Sand versus Kenji Sato. Both competitors, to the arena floor."
I smiled, cracking my knuckles.
"Alright," I said. "My turn."
