"Pull! Stop the water from washing away the road!" a frantic voice echoed through the scattered group.
The rising floodwaters surged down the dirt paths, sweeping away everything in their wake. A biting, icy wind accompanied the torrential rain, making the shivering villagers freeze where they stood in the mud.
"Why even bother...?"
A faint, chilling voice whispered directly into the ear of a man straining at a thick straw rope, trying to haul up a heavy wooden floodgate.
"Huh?!" The man snapped his head around, looking behind him, but there was no one there.
"Why are you fighting so hard for them?" the voice repeated, hovering inches from his ear despite the empty space. "After how much they shunned you? You've heard what they say about you, haven't you...?"
The man's hands began to tremble violently against the rough rope. The toxic thoughts instantly took root in his mind as his eyes darted wildly around the frantic crowd.
"Is that Muri over there? What is that waste of space doing here...?"
"Yeah... I heard about him too. A good-for-nothing loser whose wife abandoned him. Even his own children want nothing to do with him."
"I heard he was the only man in the whole district turned away from working at the Ma farm. They said he didn't even have the strength to pull a plough..."
Whether the cruel insults were real or merely figments of a targeted illusion remained to be seen, but the words cut straight to his soul.
"QUIET!" the man screamed in a sudden, hysterical roar.
His outburst echoed across the alleyway, causing the surrounding group to freeze and turn their heads. Dozens of confused, judgmental eyes locked directly onto him.
"Huh...?" Muri gasped, taking an involuntary step backwards into the churning water as his heart hammered against his ribs.
A short distance away, blending seamlessly into the dark torrential rain, the shadowed figure smirked beneath his black head covering. Turning on his heel, he melted quietly back into the gloom.
'That's another one...' the man whispered to himself, his low chuckle swallowed by the storm. 'Just one more push, and this entire village will collapse into absolute chaos.'
'What's with those eyes...? Why are they looking at me like that?' Muri thought, his vision blurring as panic clawed at his throat. 'They're mocking me, aren't they? They're all thinking it... saying that I'm useless... shunning me. The only reason they even called me out here in this storm was to let the river wash me away... Damn it... damn it... STOP IT!'
"Muri! What the hell are you doing? Stay focused!" barked Konnan, one of the village's prominent warriors.
Konnan was a hulking man nearly twice Muri's width, his long, dark blue hair plastered to his forehead by the pouring rain. He strained against two thick ropes tied to heavy wooden logs, desperately trying to construct a makeshift levee before the roaring torrent overflowed into the residential homes.
"If you lose your grip on that line, we're all swept away!" Konnan roared over the wind, his boots skidding through the churning mud.
"Help us! Please... Mommy, I'm scared!" From down the alleyway, the terrified cries of trapped children pierced through the storm.
"Can't you hear them, man? The kids need our help!" Konnan gritted his teeth, his immense muscles bulging as the current fought against him.
Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the barrier, another squad of men strained against a separate guide rope.
"Why are you fighting so hard...?"
The faint, mocking whisper echoed directly into the ear of Saitoshi, another local fighter.
"I'm trying to save my son! What the hell are you talking about?!" Saitoshi groaned through clenched teeth, his raw, bleeding hands digging deeper into the coarse straw fibres as the freezing rope cut into his skin.
"Son...?" the voice chuckled softly, floating right beside his temple. "You have no son, Saitoshi... and deep down, you've always known it, haven't you?"
Saitoshi's breath hitched.
"You know the truth..." the sinister voice purred. "Nanao was a whore. She was sleeping with half the village behind your back... and when she got pregnant, she pinned that ugly bastard onto you."
"No... No! That's not true!" Saitoshi choked out, his whole body trembling.
His grip on the heavy rope began to slip, the coarse fibres burning against his palms as his faith shattered from within.
"Who the hell is Saitoshi talking to...?" the surrounding men murmured among themselves, watching in bewilderment as Saitoshi argued with empty air.
"Oh... don't lie to yourself anymore," the invisible voice continued to purr beside his ear. "That brat has light brown hair, while yours is raven black. So is Nanao's. Think about it carefully, Saitoshi... Stop lying to yourself."
"Tch... It's true, isn't it?" Saitoshi muttered, his eyes wide and bloodshot. "I didn't want to admit it... but it's true... isn't it?!"
"Yes, it is," the whisper coaxed smoothly. "Look at them. They're laughing at you... They knew the truth all along and said nothing. Look at him over there, Mifune. He has the exact same brown hair as that bastard brat, doesn't he?"
The moment that poisonous volley of words hit Saitoshi's ears, his mind completely snapped. He let go of the heavy straw rope.
"Mifune, you bastard!" Saitoshi roared, lunging blindly across the mud toward his fellow villager.
Without Saitoshi's weight holding the line, the massive tension on the flood barrier snapped. The heavy rope whipped violently through the air like a lethal steel cable, sweeping off several nearby villagers and hurling them directly into the surging floodwaters.
"Hahaha! Humans are such simple creatures!" the hooded man cackled, leaping effortlessly into the air to perch upon a nearby rooftop. "They all carry monsters locked inside themselves, desperately trying to keep them at bay. All you need to do is forge the key... and turn the lock for them!"
Across the alleyway, a chain reaction of paranoia erupted as three more men gave in to the whispers and dropped their lines.
The floodgates collapsed. Chaos engulfed the district as screaming villagers were swept away in the rising torrent.
The hooded man watched the destruction unfold, a hideous, twisted smile spreading across his hidden face beneath the downpour.
"She is sure to be proud of me... isn't she?"
