The next day, Ewan woke up quite early, only he didn't have any plans on where to go just yet. After two consecutive expeditions, their household reserves were somewhat decent, but they were still lacking one crucial thing: fresh, leafy greens. The long winter had completely wiped out the vegetable patches in the backyard, so now that spring had arrived, he had to seize the opportunity to replant them.
Ewan brewed a pot of warm water, hurriedly washed his face, and then stepped out into the backyard.
The small patch of garden behind the house was now vastly different from the very beginning of spring. The few watermelon vines he had transplanted from the wasteland had grown somewhat larger, sporting plump, dark green leaves. The cotton plants had also shot up to calf-height, their stems sturdy. Ewan squatted down, plucking out a few pesky weeds that were growing crowdedly, and then grabbed a small hoe to loosen the soil in a vacant corner of the garden.
