Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Lotus Burns Cold

The Silent Moon Pavilion's private courtyard was small—bare stone floor, a single twisted pine in one corner, a low table between two cushions. Rain pattered steadily on the tiled roof overhead, muffling the distant clamor of Jade Wave City's night markets.

Lin Xuan sat on one cushion, back straight, refining.

The six Cicada Husk Seeds had been fully absorbed. The Fate Cicada Fragment now pulsed with a steady golden rhythm—its damaged edges sealed, its probability manipulation range doubled, its energy consumption halved. Rank three peak was no longer a distant goal; it was imminent. One more solid push—perhaps a single high-quality sacrifice—and the breakthrough would come.

Hong Lian sat opposite him on the other cushion.

She had discarded her cloak. Crimson robes spilled around her like pooled blood. Her hair was unbound, falling in dark waves over her shoulders. In the dim light of a single Night Pearl Gu, her blood-red eyes looked almost luminous.

She watched him refine for a long time without speaking.

Then she broke the silence.

"You're close."

Lin Xuan did not open his eyes.

"Close enough."

"How much longer until rank three peak?"

"Days. Perhaps less if I find suitable nourishment."

Hong Lian leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on the low table.

"And what counts as 'suitable nourishment' to you? Another nameless rogue? Another surrendered fool? Or are you already calculating how useful I would be as a sacrifice?"

Lin Xuan's eyes opened—black, calm, unreadable.

"You are rank six initial. Your aperture essence is rich. Your death would push me past peak and into rank four initial with minimal backlash. The math is favorable."

Hong Lian's smile was slow, sharp, almost admiring.

"You say that like you're reading a ledger."

"I am."

She laughed—soft, genuine, and edged with something dangerous.

"You really would do it. If the numbers lined up perfectly, you would drain me dry without a second thought."

Lin Xuan met her gaze without flinching.

"If the numbers lined up perfectly… yes."

Silence stretched between them—thick, electric.

Hong Lian leaned even closer—close enough that he could smell the faint lotus incense clinging to her skin.

"Then why haven't you?"

Lin Xuan's voice remained level.

"Because right now, the numbers do not line up perfectly. Your living value exceeds your dead value. You have rank-six combat power. Underworld connections. Knowledge of hidden routes and black-market channels. You are still useful."

He paused.

"When that changes… the calculation will change."

Hong Lian studied him for several long heartbeats.

Then she reached across the table—slowly, deliberately—and placed her hand over his.

Her palm was warm. His was cold.

She spoke quietly.

"I've spent years running from people who wanted to own me. Use me. Chain me. You're the first person who doesn't pretend otherwise. You don't dress it up in pretty words. You don't offer false promises. You just… state facts."

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"That's why I'm still here. Not because I trust you. Not because I like you. But because you're the most honest monster I've ever met."

Lin Xuan did not pull his hand away.

But he did not return the grip either.

"What do you want from me, Hong Lian?"

She smiled—small, private, almost sad.

"I want to see how far this goes. I want to stand beside you when you reach the peak and look down at everyone who ever tried to cage either of us. And maybe… just maybe… I want to prove to you that even a monster can choose not to be alone."

Lin Xuan's expression did not change.

But his voice—when he spoke—was quieter than usual.

"Choice is a luxury I discarded long ago."

Hong Lian released his hand.

She stood.

"Then keep discarding. I'll keep proving my value. And when the day comes that you decide I'm no longer worth keeping…"

She turned toward the door.

"…make sure you're fast enough to kill me before I kill you."

The door slid open.

She stepped through.

Before it closed, she looked back once.

"Goodnight, Gray."

The door sealed.

Lin Xuan remained seated—alone again.

He closed his eyes.

The Fate Cicada Fragment pulsed once—stronger, brighter, almost eager.

Rank three peak drew closer.

And somewhere deep inside his aperture, the golden threads tightened around the last remnants of the Cicada Husk Seeds.

He exhaled once—slow, controlled.

Then he resumed refinement.

Outside, the rain continued to fall.

Inside, the fracture between two predators widened just a little more.

Not enough to break the alliance.

Not yet.

But enough to make the next step… interesting.

To be continued...
