Seven hours later, the atmosphere at the border bridges was heavy with the scent of ozone and iron. Following Ekko's warning from the previous timeline, Chen had coordinated a massive joint ambush.
Urgot's cultists held the eastern crossings, while the Wildfire Squad fortified the west. Chen sought out Jinx, who was already checking the belts on Pow-Pow. He handed her a massive, heavy blade that hummed with untapped potential.
"Take this B.F. Sword," Chen commanded.
Jinx looked at the steel with a wrinkled nose. "Ugh, not this again. Melee is boring, Chen. It's all sweaty and... not explodey."
"I don't need you to swing it!" Chen insisted, forcing the hilt into her hands. "Just carry it on your back. Trust me, it'll make your bullets bite harder."
"If you say so..." Jinx muttered, slinging the oversized sword across her back.
Chen closed his eyes, praying to the system. Geek synergy, don't fail me now. Turn into Infinity Edge!
As Jinx locked the sword into her harness, the Geek synergy snapped into place. The primitive steel began to glow with a sharp, crystalline light, shifting its shape into a jagged, lethal masterpiece.
SYNERGY ACTIVE: Geek (2) Item Transformed: B.F. Sword -> Infinity Edge (+AD, +Crit Chance, +Crit Damage). Shield Granted: 60 HP to all Geeks.
"Whoa," Jinx whispered, feeling the raw power radiating from the blade. "I feel... sharp."
Chen grinned. "Now you're a hyper-carry, Powder." But even with the item spike, Chen remained wary. Camille's warnings about Hextech superiority echoed in his mind. He was banking everything on Ekko's ability to loop the battle if things turned sour.
On the Piltover side of the bridge, Jikegar stood with his Hextech Rifle, scanning the silence of the Undercity. "Something's wrong. The bridge-rats usually wait until they see the whites of our eyes. Why is it empty?"
The veteran Warden didn't hesitate. He wasn't going to walk into a dark alley blindly. "First and Fifth Columns, hold position. Bring up the Zeppelins! Turn on the searchlights!"
Chen's heart sank as he saw the massive airships—vessels he had helped design—pivot over the river. High-wattage searchlights cut through the Zaunite fog, exposing the Wildfire Squad's "hidden" machine-gun nests as if it were noon.
"Damn it! I really did shoot myself in the foot with those designs!" Chen hissed.
Ekko, crouched beside him, tried to stay calm. "It's okay, Chen. They still have to cross the—"
"FIRE AT WILL!" Jikegar's roar echoed across the water.
The Piltover Guard didn't advance. They stood on their side of the river and utilized the incredible range of the Hextech Rifles. Blue streaks of light, traveling at supersonic speeds, rained down on the Zaunite positions from hundreds of meters away.
The lead machine-gunner was vaporized before he could even squeeze the trigger.
"What is this?!" Ekko screamed as a bolt shattered the stone next to his head. "How are they hitting us from there?"
"The range is too much!" Chen roared, realizing their ambush was being dismantled before it began. "Retreat! Pull back into the alleyways where they can't see us!"
Chen leaped from cover to direct the retreat, but he was too slow. Three blue bolts converged on his position. One caught him in the chest, and the other two struck his head. In the blink of an eye, the leader of the revolution was gone—dead before he hit the ground.
"NO!" Ekko's scream was torn from his lungs.
Jinx, seeing Chen fall, went completely off the deep end. Her pupils dilated until her eyes were solid violet. "I'll kill you! I'll kill all of you!"
She didn't retreat. She mounted her hoverboard and rocketed into the sky, shouldering Fishbones and loading the Super Mega Death Rocket. She aimed for the densest cluster of blue lights on the opposite bank. "DIE!"
The missile roared to life, but in the open sky, illuminated by the searchlights, Jinx was a sitting duck. Dozens of Hextech bolts tore through her body in mid-air. Her corpse fell into the river just as the missile struck the Piltover bank.
BOOM.
A small mushroom cloud rose, pulverizing dozens of Enforcers, but the Piltover army was thousands strong. They barely paused. On the eastern bridge, a massive explosion signaled that Urgot had also been overwhelmed by the concentrated fire.
"It's over," Ekko whispered, trembling as the Piltover columns began to march across the bridge. A Wildfire soldier beside him pulled two grenades.
"Captain! The Political Commissar is dead! Powder is dead! But you... you have to be the hope! RUN!" The soldier leaped from the window in a suicide charge, the blast echoing Ekko's despair.
Ekko fumbled for the time device in his pocket. His hands were shaking so hard he almost dropped it. He closed his eyes, the blue light of the crystal reflecting in his tears.
"Wait for me," he whispered.
He pressed the button.
Whirrrrrr-POP.
The world dissolved. And then, like a familiar, haunting song, he heard Heimerdinger's voice again:
"...How is Chen's brain wired? How could he even think of this? I've lived so many years, and I've never seen such a genius."
