Cherreads

Chapter 78 - Chapter 78 — “The Truth He Buried”

The silence inside the penthouse became unbearable.

Rachel could hear her own heartbeat now.

Slow.

Heavy.

Dangerously loud in her chest.

Nobody moved.

Because Vivienne's words had changed everything.

"She's carrying your child while still knowing nothing."

Nothing.

That word stayed stuck in Rachel's head immediately.

Rachel looked directly at Raziel.

And for the first time since meeting him

She didn't know what expression she was looking at.

Not coldness.

Not control.

Something worse.

Conflict.

Daniel stepped closer instantly.

"What does she mean?"

Raziel didn't answer.

That alone terrified Rachel more than anything else tonight.

Vivienne laughed softly again.

Not mockingly.

Sadly.

"You still do this."

Raziel's jaw tightened.

"Leave."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Sharp.

Emotional.

Rachel folded her arms slowly.

"No. She stays."

Raziel's eyes snapped toward her immediately.

And for the first time

Rachel didn't soften under his gaze.

"Tell me the truth."

Silence.

Cassian looked deeply uncomfortable now.

Lucien had gone unusually quiet.

Even Daniel looked tense.

Which meant whatever this was

Everybody knew.

Everybody except Rachel.

That realization hurt more than expected.

Vivienne finally looked toward Rachel again.

Carefully this time.

"You think he became obsessed with you after meeting you."

Rachel's stomach tightened slightly.

Because technically

Yes.

That's exactly what she thought.

Vivienne's expression softened again.

"That's not what happened."

Raziel's voice cut through instantly.

"Enough."

But this time

There was strain underneath it.

Actual strain.

Rachel stepped away from him slowly.

Tiny movement.

Still enough to visibly affect him immediately.

Interesting.

Vivienne noticed too.

And suddenly Rachel realized something.

This woman wasn't trying to steal Raziel.

She was trying to expose him.

Rachel's voice lowered.

"…what didn't happen?"

Vivienne hesitated briefly.

Like even she wasn't fully sure how much to reveal.

Then finally

"She wasn't random."

Silence.

Rachel frowned.

"What?"

Vivienne looked directly at Raziel.

"You picked her long before she ever noticed you."

Rachel blinked slowly.

"…I know he watched me."

"No," Vivienne whispered.

"You don't understand."

Raziel moved toward Rachel immediately.

Fast.

Dangerously fast.

"Rachel."

But now her chest was tightening painfully.

Because suddenly

Everything felt wrong.

Vivienne continued quietly.

"You think meeting you was coincidence?"

Rachel's breathing slowed.

No.

No no no.

Raziel's expression darkened instantly.

"This conversation ends now."

And somehow

That confirmed everything.

Rachel stared at him.

Hurt beginning to creep into her voice now.

"…was it?"

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Daniel looked furious suddenly.

"What the hell did you do?"

Raziel ignored him completely.

His eyes stayed locked on Rachel.

Always Rachel.

Then finally

He answered.

Low.

Controlled.

Careful.

"No."

Rachel physically felt her heart drop.

The room suddenly felt too cold.

Too small.

Too overwhelming.

Vivienne closed her eyes briefly.

Like she hated this entire situation too.

"He saw your file three years ago."

Rachel frowned immediately.

"My… file?"

Raziel's jaw tightened harder.

And suddenly pieces started connecting violently inside Rachel's mind.

The café.

The protection.

The bodyguards.

The way he knew things about her before meeting her.

The feeling of being watched for years.

Rachel stepped backward slowly.

"…three years?"

Raziel moved instantly.

But this time

Rachel flinched slightly.

And the second she did—

Something dangerous cracked across his expression.

Because that tiny reaction hurt him.

Deeply.

"I can explain."

Rachel laughed softly.

Disbelieving.

Shaky.

"You picked me?"

His silence answered her again.

Daniel exploded immediately.

"OH YOU'RE INSANE."

Cassian muttered quietly,

"That's actually terrifying."

Nobody disagreed.

Rachel's chest tightened painfully now.

Because suddenly

She didn't know what was real anymore.

Vivienne's voice softened.

"He became obsessed with protecting you before you ever met him."

Rachel turned toward her slowly.

"Why?"

Vivienne looked at Raziel carefully.

Then finally

"Because your father once saved his life."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Rachel froze.

"My father?"

Raziel closed his eyes briefly.

And suddenly Rachel understood something terrifying.

He never wanted her to know.

Vivienne continued quietly.

"Your father hid him after a shooting years ago."

Rachel's breathing became uneven now.

Because her father died when she was younger.

He barely spoke about his past.

And suddenly

Nothing felt ordinary anymore.

Raziel finally spoke again.

Low.

Raw.

More honest than she'd ever heard him before.

"I was supposed to protect you from a distance."

Rachel looked at him silently.

"But I met you."

God.

The way he said that nearly destroyed her completely.

Raziel stepped closer slowly.

Carefully now.

Like he was afraid she'd disappear.

"I tried to stay away from you."

Rachel's eyes burned slightly.

"You failed."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Just honesty again.

Vivienne looked exhausted now.

"Once he started watching you… it was over."

Rachel stared at Raziel.

And suddenly

Everything made horrible sense.

The obsession.

The control.

The fear.

The intensity.

Because this man hadn't fallen suddenly.

He'd been drowning in her long before she even knew his name.

Rachel's voice came quieter this time.

"…you built my entire life around your protection."

Raziel's expression didn't change.

"I kept you alive."

The terrifying part?

He genuinely believed that justified everything.

Then suddenly

Rachel remembered something.

The café owner once saying:

"That black car always waits outside after your shift."

Her stomach dropped.

"That was you?"

"Yes."

"The apartment security increase?"

"Yes."

"The anonymous hospital payments after Daniel got injured years ago?"

Raziel went silent briefly.

Then

"Yes."

Daniel froze instantly.

"…WHAT?"

Rachel stared at him like she was seeing him for the first time now.

Because suddenly

Raziel Benedict wasn't just a billionaire mafia boss who fell in love with her.

He had quietly woven himself into her life for years.

Without permission.

Without her knowing.

And the worst part?

A dangerous part of her didn't know whether to run from him…

Or fall even deeper.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even moved.

Because the air inside the penthouse felt too heavy now.

Too exposed.

Rachel could still feel the shock crawling beneath her skin.

Three years.

This man had been protecting her for three years.

Watching.

Intervening.

Quietly existing around her life like a shadow she never noticed.

And somehow

That should've terrified her more than it did.

Raziel's eyes never left her.

Not once.

Like he was waiting for the exact moment she decided to hate him.

Daniel finally broke first.

"You secretly controlled parts of her life for YEARS?"

Raziel answered calmly.

"I kept her safe."

"That's not NORMAL."

"No," Raziel agreed quietly.

"It isn't."

Silence again.

Rachel swallowed slowly.

Because honestly?

The fact he admitted it so easily somehow made it worse.

Vivienne watched both of them carefully now.

Almost cautiously.

Like she understood how dangerous this moment truly was.

"You should rest," Raziel said softly toward Rachel.

Rachel blinked at him in disbelief.

"…that's what you say after dropping life-destroying information?"

His jaw tightened slightly.

"You're overwhelmed."

"You think?!"

Cassian looked deeply uncomfortable now.

Which honestly felt historic.

Rachel laughed suddenly.

Small.

Disbelieving.

Then she dragged both hands through her hair tiredly.

"I genuinely don't know if I should scream at you or kiss you."

The room went silent instantly.

Even Rachel froze slightly after saying it.

Raziel's gaze darkened immediately.

Dangerously.

And now she remembered: this man was obsessed with her.

So maybe saying things like that while emotional wasn't smart.

Daniel pointed aggressively.

"No kissing! Absolutely not!"

Cassian sighed dramatically.

"She's definitely forgiving him."

"I AM NOT," Rachel snapped instantly.

Raziel still looked entirely too focused on the part about kissing.

Vivienne suddenly laughed softly again.

And this time

Rachel understood the sadness behind it.

"You really ruined yourself over her," Vivienne murmured toward Raziel.

His answer came immediately.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

Nothing defensive.

Just truth.

Rachel's heartbeat betrayed her again.

God.

This man was impossible.

Vivienne looked toward Rachel carefully.

"You should know something else."

Raziel's expression changed instantly.

Sharp.

Warning.

"Vivienne."

But she ignored him.

"He never touched me."

Silence.

Rachel blinked slowly.

"…what?"

Daniel looked confused again.

Cassian looked INVESTED.

Vivienne shrugged lightly.

"Our marriage existed on paper. Nothing more."

Rachel's eyes moved toward Raziel immediately.

And somehow

The tension shifted again.

Softer now.

More intimate.

Because suddenly Rachel realized something terrifying.

Raziel had belonged emotionally to her long before they ever met.

Vivienne smiled faintly.

"He compared every woman to you."

Rachel's breath caught slightly.

Oh.

Oh that was

That was dangerously romantic.

Raziel looked seconds away from ending this entire conversation.

Which honestly confirmed everything further.

Rachel's voice lowered.

"…you're serious."

Vivienne nodded once.

"He built security systems around your apartment before he ever spoke to you."

Rachel stared at Raziel slowly.

"You're actually insane."

"Yes."

Again.

No denial.

No shame.

Just honesty.

And somehow that honesty made her chest ache.

Because beneath all the obsession

There was genuine love there.

Messy.

Dark.

Unhealthy in some ways.

But real.

Painfully real.

Then suddenly

The penthouse lights cut out completely.

Darkness swallowed the room instantly.

Rachel's heartbeat jumped.

"What happened?"

Before anyone could answer

Emergency backup lights flashed red across the penthouse walls.

Security alarms exploded again.

Louder this time.

Urgent.

Raziel moved instantly.

One arm wrapping around Rachel protectively while his other hand reached for his weapon again.

The atmosphere changed violently.

No more emotional conversations.

Only danger now.

A voice suddenly shouted through the security system:

"Boss we lost camera feeds on the east side!"

Cassian's expression sharpened immediately.

"That's not possible."

Lucien was already reaching for weapons.

Daniel stepped directly beside Rachel.

Protective instinct again.

Then another voice came through

Panicked this time.

"Someone breached the private level"

Gunshots echoed downstairs.

Rachel froze instantly.

And Raziel's entire demeanor turned lethal.

More shouting followed through the intercom.

Then suddenly

Static.

Silence.

Vivienne's face paled slightly.

"…they found this place."

Raziel looked terrifyingly calm now.

Which Rachel was beginning to understand meant things were very bad.

Then

A single message flashed across the massive penthouse security screen in glowing red letters:

SEND RACHEL BROOKS DOWNSTAIRS.

OR EVERYONE DIES.

Silence crushed the room instantly.

And slowly

Very slowly

Raziel's arm tightened around Rachel like he was already preparing for war.
