Chapter 61 - Chapter 61 – “Truth Doesn't Knock Twice”

No one moved.

Not immediately.

Because once a question like that is asked

The room doesn't breathe the same anymore.

Rachel stood there, her eyes locked on Raziel, steady, unblinking.

"…is that true?" she repeated.

Still calm.

Still controlled.

But now

There was no softness left in it.

Just expectation.

Raziel looked at her.

Really looked.

And for the first time since everything began

He didn't look like a man in control.

He looked like a man choosing between two consequences.

Silence stretched.

The woman didn't interrupt this time.

She just watched.

Because she knew

This was the moment.

And moments like this?

They don't need help.

They unfold on their own.

"…yes."

The word was quiet.

But it didn't need volume.

It landed exactly where it was meant to.

Rachel didn't flinch.

Didn't step back.

Didn't react the way most people would.

She just… absorbed it.

Let it settle.

Let it find its place.

Then

"…okay," she said softly.

Too soft.

Too steady.

That alone made Raziel take a step toward her.

"Rachel"

She raised her hand again.

Not to stop him this time.

But to slow everything down.

"…don't rush it," she said quietly.

"Let it sit."

That wasn't anger.

That was processing.

And somehow

That felt heavier.

The woman exhaled softly, shifting her weight slightly.

"…I told you," she murmured.

Not smug.

Not loud.

Just factual.

Rachel didn't look at her.

Not yet.

Because this wasn't about her.

Not fully.

"…what exactly is true?" Rachel asked after a moment.

Her eyes stayed on Raziel.

Focused.

Precise.

"You said those things before?" she continued.

"To someone else?"

Raziel didn't hesitate this time.

"Yes."

Another clean hit.

Rachel nodded slowly.

"…and her?" she asked.

A pause.

Then

"Yes."

That one sat deeper.

Because now

There was no space left for interpretation.

No "complicated."

No gray area.

Just fact.

Rachel turned her head slightly then.

Finally looking at the woman again.

Not with hostility.

Not with comparison.

Just… clarity.

"…so you're not just from 'before,'" Rachel said.

The woman met her gaze.

"No."

A small pause.

Then

"I'm part of what never really ended."

That sentence changed everything.

Even the air felt different.

Rachel held her gaze for a second longer.

Then nodded once.

"…that makes more sense."

Raziel stepped forward again.

Closer now.

"Rachel, listen to me."

This time

She didn't stop him.

But she didn't soften either.

"I am listening," she said.

"That's the problem."

That line hit.

Because now

Everything he said mattered.

More than before.

More than ever.

"…it's not what it sounds like," Raziel said.

Rachel's lips curved slightly.

Not a smile.

Just recognition.

"That's your second line," she replied quietly.

Silence.

He exhaled slowly.

Then

"It ended."

Rachel tilted her head slightly.

"When?"

A pause.

Raziel didn't answer immediately.

And that

That hesitation again

Was louder than anything.

Rachel nodded slowly.

"…exactly."

The woman let out a soft breath, almost amused again.

"You see?" she said gently.

"He leaves out the parts that matter."

Raziel's voice dropped.

"Enough."

This time

There was tension in it.

Real tension.

But the woman didn't push further.

She didn't need to.

The damage wasn't coming from her anymore.

It was coming from truth itself.

Rachel stepped back slightly.

Not far.

Just enough to feel the space between them again.

"…why didn't you tell me?" she asked.

That question

That one carried something deeper.

Not accusation.

Not anger.

Just… something that wanted honesty.

Raziel looked at her.

And for once

There was no clean answer.

"I was going to," he said.

Rachel nodded slowly.

"When?"

Silence.

Again.

And this time

It hurt more.

Because there was no answer waiting behind it.

Rachel let out a quiet breath.

Then laughed softly.

Not because anything was funny.

But because something inside her had just… shifted.

"…I asked you for one thing," she said.

Her voice still calm.

Still steady.

"Honesty."

A pause.

Then

"You gave me protection instead."

That line sat heavy.

Raziel stepped closer again.

"Because you don't understand what you're standing in."

Rachel looked at him.

And for the first time

There was something new in her eyes.

Not fear.

Not insecurity.

Something sharper.

"…then explain it," she said.

A beat.

"Or stop deciding for me."

The woman watched that exchange closely now.

Quiet.

Interested.

Because this

This was no longer about her presence.

It was about what they were becoming.

Raziel ran a hand through his hair slowly.

Then looked at Rachel again.

"…she was never supposed to come here."

Rachel didn't react.

"That doesn't answer anything."

He nodded once.

"I know."

A pause.

Then

"She's tied to things I'm trying to keep you away from."

Rachel's gaze didn't waver.

"And yet she's standing in front of me."

That landed.

Because it was true.

Too true.

Silence filled the room again.

But this time

It wasn't confusion.

It was clarity forming.

Piece by piece.

Rachel looked between them once more.

Then made a decision.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just… internally.

"…I'm not leaving," she said.

Both of them looked at her.

That wasn't expected.

She continued:

"But I'm also not staying the same."

A pause.

Then

"You don't get to control what I know anymore."

Raziel's jaw tightened slightly.

"Rachel"

She shook her head gently.

"No."

Soft.

Final.

"…if I'm in this," she added,

"then I'm in it fully."

That line shifted everything.

Because now

She wasn't just reacting.

She was choosing.

The woman smiled faintly again.

But this time

There was something different in it.

Respect.

"…now this just got interesting," she murmured.

Rachel didn't look at her.

She kept her eyes on Raziel.

"…so here's what's going to happen," she said quietly.

A pause.

"You're going to tell me everything."

Another pause.

"And you're not going to decide what I can handle."

Silence.

Raziel held her gaze.

Long.

Measured.

And for the first time

There was no easy way out.

Outside, the city lights flickered like nothing had changed.

But inside

Everything had.

Because now

It wasn't about love being soft anymore.

It was about whether it could survive truth.

And truth

Had just walked through the door.

Uninvited.

Unstoppable.

And no longer willing to stay quiet.

No one spoke immediately after Rachel's words.

Not because there was nothing to say

But because everything that could be said now carried consequences.

Real ones.

Raziel watched her like he was trying to understand when exactly she stopped being the version of her he could shield.

And became this.

Composed.

Unmoved.

Unafraid of what she might hear next.

"…you don't understand what you're asking for," he said finally.

Low.

Careful.

Rachel didn't blink.

"Then make me understand."

That was it.

No hesitation.

No soft landing.

Just forward.

The woman shifted slightly, leaning back against the edge of the table now like she had no intention of leaving anytime soon.

"…this is the part where he either lies," she said lightly,

"or finally tells the truth."

Raziel didn't look at her.

But his voice sharpened.

"Stay out of this."

She smiled.

"I've been out of it long enough."

That line dropped something heavy into the room.

Rachel felt it.

Not fully.

But enough to know

This wasn't just unfinished.

It was unresolved.

Raziel exhaled slowly, his hand resting against his jaw for a second before dropping.

Then he looked at Rachel again.

And this time

There was less control in it.

More… weight.

"…her name is Selene."

The woman didn't react.

But Rachel noticed the shift anyway.

Names make things real.

Permanent.

"…and?" Rachel asked.

Still calm.

Still steady.

Raziel's gaze didn't leave hers.

"…she wasn't just someone I was involved with."

A pause.

Then

"She was part of everything."

Rachel's chest tightened slightly.

But her expression didn't give it away.

"…everything?" she repeated.

Selene's lips curved faintly.

"He's underselling it."

Raziel ignored her.

"She knows things," he continued.

"Things about me. About how things work. About what I've built."

Rachel nodded slowly.

"So she's dangerous."

Selene laughed softly.

"Careful," she said.

"You're starting to sound like him."

Rachel's eyes flicked to her briefly.

"…I'm trying to understand why you're here."

Selene's gaze sharpened slightly.

Then

"Because he doesn't end things cleanly," she said.

"And loose ends?"

A pause.

"They don't stay quiet forever."

Raziel stepped forward again.

Enough.

"This isn't necessary."

Selene looked at him.

"Oh, it is."

Then her eyes returned to Rachel.

"…do you know what happens when you get too close to him?"

Rachel didn't respond.

Selene answered anyway.

"You stop seeing clearly."

Silence.

Then softer

"And by the time you do…"

Her gaze flicked to Raziel again.

"…you're already in too deep."

Rachel took a slow breath in.

Then stepped forward.

Closing the distance between all of them slightly.

Not intimidated.

Not retreating.

"…I'm not interested in warnings," she said.

Her voice calm.

But firmer now.

"I'm interested in truth."

That line shifted the energy again.

Because now

This wasn't just about reacting.

She was taking control of the moment.

Raziel's eyes stayed on her.

"…there are people involved," he said.

"Situations that don't just disappear because I want them to."

Rachel tilted her head slightly.

"Then why act like they did?"

Silence.

That hit.

Harder than anything else so far.

Selene pushed off the table slowly.

Walking closer now.

Not invading.

Just enough to feel present.

Important.

"…because he thought you were different," she said softly.

Rachel didn't look at her.

But she heard it.

"And I am," Rachel replied.

That was immediate.

Certain.

Selene smiled slightly.

"That's what I said too."

That one

That one landed differently.

Rachel's gaze snapped to her.

Sharp.

"…you don't know me," Rachel said.

Selene held her gaze.

"No," she agreed.

A pause.

"But I know him."

The tension in the room tightened.

Thicker now.

More dangerous.

Because now

It wasn't just about truth.

It was about comparison.

Unspoken.

But present.

Raziel stepped between them again.

Enough.

"That's not happening," he said firmly.

Selene raised a brow.

"What?"

He didn't hesitate.

"You don't get to stand here and turn this into something it's not."

Selene's expression didn't change.

"But it is something," she replied quietly.

"And you know it."

Rachel watched both of them now.

Not confused.

Not lost.

Just… observing.

And slowly

Something inside her clicked.

Not fully.

But enough.

"…you didn't expect her to come here," Rachel said.

Raziel didn't respond.

"So that means something changed," she continued.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…what happened today?"

That question shifted everything.

Because this time

Raziel didn't deflect.

He didn't answer either.

But his silence?

It confirmed it.

Selene's smile deepened slightly.

"…see?" she murmured.

"Now she's asking the right questions."

Rachel's heart picked up slightly.

Not panic.

But instinct.

Because now

This wasn't just past.

This was current.

Active.

Dangerous.

"…what happened?" she asked again.

More direct this time.

Raziel's jaw tightened.

"…it's handled."

Rachel shook her head slightly.

"That's not an answer."

Selene tilted her head.

"He never answers directly when it matters," she said.

Then softly

"Something went wrong."

That sentence dropped like weight.

Rachel felt it immediately.

Her gaze snapped back to Raziel.

"…what went wrong?"

This time

He didn't stay silent.

But his answer?

Was worse.

"…you shouldn't be involved in this."

Rachel let out a small breath.

Almost a laugh.

But not amused.

"…I already am."

Silence again.

But now

It wasn't just tension.

It was build-up.

Something coming.

Close.

Too close.

Suddenly

A sharp vibration cut through the room.

Not Raziel's phone this time.

Selene's.

She glanced down at it.

And for the first time since she walked in

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Rachel noticed.

Of course she did.

Selene read the message quickly.

Then looked up.

Straight at Raziel.

And whatever she saw in his face

Made her smile disappear completely.

"…you didn't tell her that either?" she said quietly.

Raziel didn't respond.

Rachel's chest tightened.

"…tell me what?" she asked.

Selene held her gaze now.

No amusement.

No softness.

Just truth.

Raw.

"…they know about her."

Silence.

Dead.

Heavy.

Rachel felt it

Before she even understood it.

"…who?" she whispered.

Selene didn't look away.

"The people he's been trying to keep you away from."

A pause.

Then

"They know you exist."

Everything stopped.

Not physically.

But inside Rachel

Something dropped.

Hard.

Raziel moved instantly.

"Selene"

But it was too late.

The words were already out.

And now

They couldn't be taken back.

Rachel looked at him.

Not scared.

Not yet.

But something in her eyes shifted.

Deep.

Real.

"…what does that mean?" she asked quietly.

Raziel stepped closer.

This time faster.

More urgent.

"It means nothing if I handle it."

Rachel's voice didn't rise.

"…and if you don't?"

Silence.

Just one second.

But that second

Said everything.

Selene exhaled slowly.

"…then she becomes part of it."

Rachel's fingers curled slightly at her side.

Her pulse steady.

But louder now.

"…part of what?"

Selene's gaze didn't soften.

"Everything you think he's protecting you from."

And for the first time

Rachel felt it.

Not doubt.

Not confusion.

Something sharper.

Something dangerous.

Because now

This wasn't just love anymore.

This was risk.

Raziel reached for her.

But she stepped back.

Just slightly.

Enough.

"…don't," she said.

Soft.

But firm.

That stopped him.

Immediately.

Rachel's gaze held his.

Steady.

Unshaken.

But no longer the same.

"…you should've told me," she said quietly.

And that line

Carried more weight than anything else she had said tonight.

Another silence.

But this one

Was final.

Before something bigger.

And then

A phone rang.

Loud.

Sharp.

Not inside the penthouse.

Outside.

Near the door.

Then

A second sound.

A knock.

Not like before.

Not controlled.

Not patient.

This one was harder.

Urgent.

Demanding.

All three of them froze.

Raziel's head turned instantly toward the door.

Selene's expression went completely still.

And Rachel

Rachel didn't move.

But her heart?

It wasn't calm anymore.

The knock came again.

Louder.

Heavier.

Like whoever was outside

Wasn't planning to wait.

Raziel's voice dropped.

Low.

Dangerous.

"…stay here."

But Rachel didn't respond.

Because now

She wasn't sure if staying was safer.

Or walking straight into whatever was waiting on the other side.

The handle moved.
