The main hall looked worse in the morning light than it had the night before. Ash everywhere, broken plates and a table leg that had been used as firewood and then dropped in the middle of the floor. I stood in the doorway and just looked at it for a minute.
"We have work to do," I said.
Mara came up beside me with a broom that was mostly just a stick with some twigs tied to the end. She looked at the mess and then at me.
"We need more than this," she said.
"Use what we have."
She nodded and walked in and started sweeping the ash toward the door. The other omegas followed behind her. They moved slow but steady. No one complained, no one asked when breakfast was coming. They just started cleaning.
I found a bucket by the well. Half full of water, not clean but clean enough for washing. I carried it inside and set it near the broken plates.
