Chapter 148 - Chapter 148 Goodbye, Maggie

"So that's it—Dominic and the others escaped!"

Near Mia's coffeehouse, Hunter stared at the storefront that had already been re-leased.

After a long silence, he drove off.

He didn't blame Dominic for not notifying him when they ran.

The FBI's surveillance and wiretaps showed something had happened in Los Angeles that he hadn't known about.

It must have been sudden, forcing Dominic to evacuate in a hurry.

As for not telling him, either they couldn't reach him or they didn't want to drag him down.

Dominic hadn't realized, though, that from the day Hunter started dating Mia and hired the lawyer to bail him out, the FBI had stamped him as Dominic's accomplice.

Hunter simply hadn't given them any proof.

Confirming that Dominic and Mia had likely fled Los Angeles—and the country—over ten days ago, Hunter didn't feel too sad.

He remembered that in the fast & furious storyline, Dominic had escaped alone to the Caribbean.

He couldn't recall whether it was to the island nation of Dominic or the Dominican Republic, but both were in the Caribbean, not far apart.

With Dominic's temperament, wherever he landed, he wouldn't stay quiet for long; tracking him down later wouldn't be hard.

The only uncertainty was that in the original plot, only Dominic ran—his sister Mia and girlfriend Letty stayed in the U.S.

Now all three had vanished, which surprised Hunter and made it impossible to predict whether Dominic might impulsively split everyone up.

If they scattered and headed for separate destinations, it would be bad news.

In the original story, that move had nearly cost him Letty and even produced a child with another woman.

If Dominic lost Mia, Hunter—though fond of the big bald guy—would make sure he tasted a fist three times stronger than an average man's.

He swung by the apartment block: Michael's place still bore FBI seals, but next door the hitman Léon's flat was empty.

Thanks to Hunter's interference, the middle-aged Italian killer had lost the little girl who understood him, yet kept his life.

Alive, he might still meet someone better; for Léon, that could be a decent ending.

Confirming that Maggie and Matilda hadn't returned, Hunter even checked his own rented apartment and found no note, so he didn't bother terminating the lease; it had two months left, and he simply wouldn't stay there for now.

After leaving the complex, he headed for the seaside hotel.

He had checked earlier: when the FBI took Maggie, she kept the keycard, so he hadn't checked out and later extended the booking for another week.

He was still very satisfied with that good neighbor-wife.

Although he was already in his thirties, Hunter hadn't invested any real feelings in her.
