Chapter 28 - A SIN TO REMEMBER

Chapter Twenty-Eight: What Marcus Refused to Save Her From

Marcus watched Lila from the edges of her life.

He did not intervene when she struggled. Did not offer comfort wrapped in heroism. Loving her had taught him restraint — the kind that burns quietly and thoroughly.

When they finally met again, it was not cinematic.

It was ordinary. Coffee. Neutral ground. Daylight.

She looked thinner. Not physically — existentially.

"You left everything," he said.

"I left what was already gone," she replied.

Marcus studied her carefully, as though she were a structure he had once lived in and now had permission only to observe. He did not touch her. He did not ask her to stay.

Instead, he said something that unsettled her.

"If you're here because you think I'll make it easier… I won't."

Relief and terror collided inside her.

Marcus did not want to be her reward. He wanted to be her consequence — chosen consciously, without illusion. He loved her too much to rescue her from the weight of her own decision.

They spoke of small things. Weather. Time. Distance. Everything except the fact that every word carried history like a loaded weapon.

When they parted, Lila felt steadier and more undone than before.

Marcus had not promised her happiness.

He had promised her honesty.

And that, she realized, might demand more from her than marriage ever had.
