Chapter 20 - Chapter 21: Duel of the Chosen

The air changed the moment Kael stepped into the arena.

It wasn't a cavern this time, nor a labyrinth of illusions. This place was vast and circular, carved from obsidian stone, its surface etched with glowing red sigils that pulsed like living veins. Above, the sky was nothing but swirling darkness, as if the Nightmare Realm itself leaned in to watch.

Lira stopped at the edge of the platform.

"Kael…" Her voice was low, tense. "This isn't a trial anymore. This is an execution waiting to happen."

Kael nodded slowly. The Abyss inside him stirred—alert, excited, hungry.

At the center of the arena, shadows gathered and took form. A figure emerged, tall and broad-shouldered, wrapped in fractured armor that seemed fused to his flesh. Black and crimson energy leaked from the cracks like smoke.

His eyes glowed the same red as Kael's veins.

[Warning: Host Detected]

Entity Classification: Abyssal Host — Level 3 Evolution]

Kael's breath hitched.

Another host.

The Council's voice echoed from all directions, calm and merciless.

"Kael Vire. You have proven restraint, strategy, and psychological fortitude. Now, you will face one who chose power without hesitation."

The other host raised his head and smiled.

A cruel, hollow smile.

"My name is Riven," he said, his voice distorted, layered with something inhuman. "And I stopped pretending the Abyss was my enemy a long time ago."

The Abyss inside Kael surged violently.

"Obey… merge… consume… this one understands…"

Kael steadied himself. "You surrendered to it."

Riven laughed. "No. I embraced it. There's a difference."

The sigils beneath them ignited.

[Council-Enforced Duel Initiated]

Conditions: One host must fall, surrender, or lose control.]

Lira's voice cracked from the sidelines. "Kael—don't let it push you into killing him!"

Riven lunged before Kael could respond.

The arena exploded into motion.

Riven moved like a living weapon—faster, stronger, utterly unrestrained. Blades of condensed Abyss formed along his arms, slashing toward Kael with lethal precision. Kael barely raised a shield of shadow in time, the impact sending shockwaves across the arena floor.

His arms burned.

So this is Level 3…

The Abyss inside him screamed in exhilaration.

"Take it… evolve… obey… you can be more…"

Kael countered, sending tendrils to bind Riven's limbs—but they shattered instantly, ripped apart by raw, violent power.

Riven grinned wider. "You hesitate. That's why you're weaker."

He struck again, driving Kael back, cracking the stone beneath his feet.

Kael felt it—the difference between them wasn't skill.

It was choice.

Riven didn't restrain himself. He didn't calculate morality. He let the Abyss flood him completely.

Kael wiped blood from his lip and forced himself to breathe.

"No," he said quietly. "That's why I'm still myself."

He shifted tactics.

Instead of overpowering Riven, Kael redirected attacks, using the arena's sigils to absorb excess Abyssal energy. He anticipated movements, forced Riven into overcommitting, turned raw aggression into openings.

Riven growled as Kael's tendrils wrapped around his arm—this time holding.

"What are you doing?" Riven snarled. "End it!"

Kael tightened his grip. "You're not my enemy. The Abyss is."

The Council's voice cut in sharply. "Mercy is inefficient."

Riven laughed bitterly. "Hear that? They don't care who we are. Only what we become."

The Abyss surged harder than ever, roaring inside Kael's mind.

"Kill… evolve… surpass… obey…"

His vision blurred.

For a terrifying second, Kael felt himself slipping—felt the pull of Level 3 calling to him, promising strength, dominance, certainty.

Lira shouted his name.

That broke it.

Kael anchored himself to her voice, to his choices, to the line he refused to cross.

With a roar of effort, he redirected the Abyss inward—not to expand, but to stabilize.

[Synchronization Recalibrated: 94%]

Status: Forced Evolution Rejected]

Riven froze, eyes wide.

"You… refused it?" he whispered.

Kael released him, stepping back. "You don't have to lose yourself."

The silence that followed was heavy.

Then Riven collapsed to his knees, the Abyss around him spiraling out of control.

"No…" he gasped. "I gave it everything…"

The shadows consumed him—not violently, but indifferently—pulling him into the floor like a rejected offering.

The arena dimmed.

The Council spoke once more.

"Kael Vire… you have defied expectation. You rejected forced evolution and preserved autonomy. This outcome… is unprecedented."

Kael stood shaking, exhausted, alive.

Lira ran to him, gripping his armor. "You did it. You survived."

He looked at the place where Riven had vanished.

"No," Kael said softly. "I endured."

The Abyss whispered again—but quieter now, cautious.

"You deny… but you grow… this changes everything…"

Kael lifted his head, resolve burning in his eyes.

Let the Council watch.

Let the Realm judge.

He would not become a monster just to survive.
