(The Forgotten Seal)
The hooded man had forgotten something.
Fear changed rhythm.
Not much.
Just enough.
Pryan saw it.
One heartbeat.
One hesitation.
In another battle, another life, it would've been meaningless.
Here—
It was the first mistake his opponent had made.
Ashveil moved.
The hooded man reacted immediately.
Steel collided.
The impact burst through the chamber, splitting another pillar down its center. Chunks of ancient stone crashed onto abandoned rails below, dust swallowing the battlefield for a moment.
The hooded man twisted away and regained his footing.
"...Impossible."
His breathing had changed.
Only slightly.
But it had changed.
Pryan didn't answer.
He simply walked forward.
Each step echoed strangely through the chamber.
Not louder.
Deeper.
The darkness surrounding him continued to drift around Ashveil without behaving like mana. It neither flared nor diminished.
It simply followed.
The hooded man forced himself calm.
"No," he muttered. "Fear is inefficiency."
He inhaled once.
Then raised both hands.
Mana circles expanded beneath his feet.
Not one.
Seven.
Each smaller than the last.
Each rotating in a different direction.
The chamber trembled.
"Synchronization Art."
His voice steadied again.
"Twelfth Sequence."
Every mana lamp in the chamber extinguished.
Only the circles beneath his feet remained.
"Perfect Cadence."
The tunnel changed.
Water dripping somewhere in the darkness stopped falling naturally.
Dust no longer drifted.
Even the collapsing ceiling seemed to slow.
The hooded man disappeared.
Not from speed.
From timing.
His strike came from Pryan's blind side.
Then another.
Then another.
Pryan blocked the first.
Missed the second.
Caught the third with his dagger.
The fourth cut across his shoulder.
Blood scattered through the air.
The hooded man finally pressed the advantage.
"You've reached your limit."
Another strike.
"You've adapted."
Steel screamed.
"You've grown."
A kick slammed into Pryan's ribs.
Stone cracked beneath him.
"But you're still human."
Pryan slid backward several meters.
His breathing became uneven again.
The darkness around him flickered.
For a second—
It almost disappeared.
The hooded man noticed immediately.
"So that's it."
A faint smile returned beneath the hood.
"It isn't stable."
He stepped forward.
"I don't need to defeat it."
Another step.
"I only need to outlast it."
Far across the tunnel network—
Kaien stopped.
He knelt beside a collapsed relay station hidden inside an older stone corridor.
His fingers brushed across markings carved into the wall.
Not Imperial.
Not Academy.
Not even modern.
Older.
Much older.
Several symbols had been deliberately scratched away.
Others remained.
He studied them quietly.
Then his expression hardened.
"...A seal."
Behind him, Mireya caught up, still breathing heavily.
"You found something?"
Kaien stood.
"I found what this tunnel was built around."
He looked toward the deeper passages.
"These tunnels weren't made to hide people."
"They were made to reach somewhere."
Mireya frowned.
"You mean..."
Kaien nodded once.
"The relay network."
"The information leaks."
"The hidden routes."
"They're secondary."
His voice had grown quieter.
"Whatever they're trying to reach..."
"...has been here much longer than this kingdom."
Elsewhere—
Aurelian carefully brushed more dust from the enormous stone door.
The symbols became clearer.
Ancient rings surrounded a circular center where five empty depressions had been carved.
Nyra looked over his shoulder.
"...Five."
Lucien frowned.
"Five what?"
"I don't know."
Aurelian continued examining the carvings.
The deeper he looked—
The less they resembled writing.
More like...
Instructions.
Near the center lay the single name.
Still unreadable.
Until sunlight—
No.
Not sunlight.
A thin crack from a mana crystal reflected across the stone.
The ancient letters shimmered.
Then became clear.
Nyra whispered it first.
"...Nyxara."
The chamber answered.
Not with sound.
With pressure.
The entire stone door vibrated once.
Lucien took two quick steps backward.
"I don't like that."
Nobody did.
Back inside the ruined nexus—
The hooded man attacked again.
Synchronization Art reached its peak.
Every movement around Pryan was now perfectly ordered.
Every strike arrived exactly where it should.
Exactly when it should.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Pryan blocked.
Barely.
His arms had begun trembling.
Blood dripped steadily from his fingertips.
His legs felt heavier.
His breathing rougher.
The hooded man smiled.
"There."
"I see it now."
"The limit."
Pryan slowly looked up.
"...Maybe."
The hooded man blinked.
"...Maybe?"
Pryan adjusted Ashveil.
"I've never actually been here before."
The answer confused him.
Then he understood.
Pryan wasn't talking about the tunnel.
He was talking about himself.
The hooded man attacked with everything he had.
Synchronization Art.
Perfect Cadence.
Every sequence layered together.
The chamber exploded.
Stone burst apart.
The ceiling collapsed.
Ancient rails twisted upward like broken roots.
Ashveil rose.
No technique name.
No stance.
Just one swing.
The darkness around the blade expanded naturally.
The hooded man's entire technique shattered.
Not overpowered.
Interrupted.
Like someone had erased a sentence before it finished being written.
His eyes widened violently.
"What..."
For the first time—
Synchronization Art failed.
Completely.
Silence returned.
The hooded man staggered backward.
His breathing became uneven.
His heartbeat accelerated.
His rhythm—
Was gone.
Then he laughed.
Not proudly.
Not confidently.
Like someone who had just realized history had taken a turn it wasn't supposed to.
"So..."
he whispered.
"So that's why..."
His gaze fixed on Pryan.
"...The future changed."
Pryan froze.
The sentence landed harder than any blade.
The hooded man knew something.
Not everything.
Enough.
Enough to make Pryan's chest tighten.
Enough to bring back memories he had buried beneath two lifetimes.
The ruined battlefield.
The black sky.
The five figures standing above the world.
The last day.
The hooded man smiled weakly.
"You remember it..."
It wasn't a question.
"You really do."
Pryan's fingers tightened around Ashveil.
For the first time since entering the tunnels—
His calm cracked.
And somewhere beyond the shattered chamber...
Something trapped behind the ancient stone door opened its eyes.
