Chapter 12 - Something I have to do

"A m-monster. No...a demon! This is a demon."

A man ran through the street underneath the rainy sky as he pushed his body as far as he could. Anything to get away from that dark alley where that...thing was.

The red bandana that usually hung on his right hand was gone. It was once a symbol of terror enough to strike fear into the hearts of the residents of the town, but that creature...

An image of a black crowbar descending like an executioner's axe towards his face briefly flashed through his mind, making him stumble and fall onto the sidewalk. White hot pain shot up from his dislocated jaw as it smashed against the wet concrete.

He cursed out in pain as he lay there for a few moments, hot tears and snot streaming down his face as he waited out the pulses of pain.

Suddenly, as if remembering what he was running from, he staggered to his feet, ignoring the looks the passer-bys have him as they walked around him and limped towards the darker section of the city.

Somewhere else

CRACK-

Rael sighed as the blunted end of the pointed rod crashed down on the head of the last of the thugs. Or at least, what used to be the pointed one. Somewhere along the way, it had broken into someone. Now it was broken barely the length of a kitchen knife.

He walked over to the side of the alley and collapsed with his back to the wall.

Littered around the alley were several thugs of various builds and ages, yet all of them shared the same rate. This was not to say that Rael had escaped unscathed. Throughout the fight, he had sustained many injuries all over his body. His arms felt like lead, strained too much, too quickly that they hurt to even move. His palms were terribly blistered and swollen with a long line of red running down his right hand. The rest of his body was no less better. He had taken his fair share of hits and cuts. A particularly wide cut in his side made him wince as he leaned back against the wall. His shirt was severely ripped.

His view was tinted a slight red as the rain mixed with his blood and that of his attackers, causing a slightly salty taste on his lips.

He was hurting. A lot.

Yet he grinned.

This was all worth it.

Yes...all for his goal.

He heard a buzzing noise and reached into his pocket. There he pulled out a phone with a pink case showing an incoming call. The screen was severely cracked but still functional somehow. Rael smiled in relief. He had deliberately tried to ensure his phone didn't get broken during the fight because of the call he was waiting for.

He picked the call and put it to his ear.

For a moment, there was a silence on the other end before a furious, trembling voice came from it.

"Damn it!" Rael heard the sound of a fist slamming into a table and smiled.

"So it's true."

It seemed like his efforts weren't wrong.

"Ra#\[%, don't... please don't do it." The voiced seemed to be pleading.

"Sorry Wal. It's something I have to do."

"Ra-"

Rael cut the call and after a moment, reluctantly stood up. He picked up the remaining crowbar and was about to leave when he noticed the leader of the thugs barely clinging to consciousness.

The man was seriously about to die yet he glared at Rael with scalding hatred, not even the least afraid after seeing him wipe the floor with his goons. Or maybe he was just delusional.

Rael smiled, genuinely amused this time.

"What a funny sight."

He swung the crowbar once.

And the man went silent.

Rael quietly put the crowbar back into the backpack before slinging it over his shoulder and walking out the alley. A bloody, mad painting of broken bodies behind him.

"This is bad. This is bad. This is bad. This is bad. This is bad." A brown haired teenager muttered anxiously as he bit his fingernails.

"Shut the fuck up, you freeloader." A girl snapped at him. "Tch, I can't believe we're in this mess because of you."

The woman was dressed in a black tracksuit with a red cloth band across her arm and had an irritated scowl on her face as she paced around the length of the warehouse.

"That lazy bastard! Where the hell is he?"

Her partner was supposed to have arrived more than an hour ago but there had been no sign of him.

"Calm down. He's probably on his way right now with that fucker." A smooth, masculine voice said from somewhere behind her. She turned around to see a blonde man with piercing grey eyes smile charmingly at her. He was the same as his little sister, just even more handsome. She turned away before he could see her blush.

He chuckled as he leaned on the side of a black car with a cigar in hand before exhaling deeply, annoyed at the fact he had to wait this long because of some brat.

'Well, this is all for little Chlo. I hope he knows what's good for him and complies. Honestly, I don't know why Chloe's so afraid of him. Even as far as to make a backup plan.'

His eyes drifted to a dark corner where the light barely reached before settling on his sister sitting beside him, her face as stoic as ever, yet a faint ripple of unease marred her face.

"Though, I swear, if that prick is still in bed, I'll -BANG!

"Eh?"

He felt a warm liquid run splash against his cheek and heard the sound of a body dropping.

"Fuck! Ron!" He heard the woman shout in panic as the boy suddenly dropped dead, blood pooling around him. He crushed the cigar under his feet and got up.

"Shit! What the fuck hap-BANG!"

Suddenly, the woman folded up and dropped dead onto the floor.

'Shit. Shit. Shit. Did that kid call the cops on us?'

"You know, your thoughts are so, so loud."

He heard a voice behind him and before he could pull out his gun, a gun shot rang out, hitting him on the shoulder of his gun hand.

He saw a kid walk out of the shadows of the warehouse holding a pistol in his right hand. The kid was dressed in the same uniform as his sister, albeit is was bloodied and torn in several places, yet the kid was smiling.

"Argh, you... Motherfuc-BANG!"

Another shot rang out.

Then another.

And another.

And another.

Again and again and again.

Soon, a clicking sound was all that was left echoing through the warehouse.

Rael sighed dejectedly.

"Man, I had a whole speech prepared for this moment but his ugly face ruined it."

He tossed the gun aside without much thought before turning to face a figure hidden under a shadow.

"Don't you think so Ness, or should I say...Euphoria?"

Suddenly, a bright light seemed to come from everywhere, lighting up the figure kneeling bound in a corner with cold eyes.

Vanessa.

Or something that looked like her. Her long black hair suddenly seemed to ripple, changing into a deep pink, her skin darkened into a smooth stone-like grey.

Her green eyes were now pink slits tinted with red inside.

Her lips twisted into a cold, furious smirk.

"You...are really annoying, Asshole."
