The den had quieted in the slow way a storm settles after spending all its energy.
The phoenix boys had finally exhausted themselves from arguing about things that only they understood. Chunky lay sprawled across Alo's thigh like a satisfied loaf of feathers. Smartie Pants had fallen asleep halfway through trying to climb a stack of folded blankets and now rested in a tiny golden heap. Brave remained the last one awake for a while, stubbornly watching Charlotte as if guarding her dreams, until even he eventually waddled closer to Luna and tucked himself against her side.
The fire in the den burned low and warm.
Luna sat in the center of the fur pile with Charlotte in her arms, gently rocking back and forth while the baby phoenix blinked up at her with heavy sleepy eyes.
Charlotte was fighting sleep with determination, every time her eyes began to close, she opened them again with a tiny suspicious expression as if she might miss something important if she gave in.
Luna smiled down at her "oh no you don't," she murmured softly. "You're not winning this battle."
Charlotte made a tiny protesting sound.
Luna began rocking her a little more slowly, brushing her fingers through the soft red tufts of hair on Charlotte's head.
Then she started singing quietly. "How many times can I kiss Charlotte before she goes to sleep…" She kissed Charlotte's forehead "One…"
Charlotte blinked.
Luna kissed her cheek "Two…"
Charlotte made a tiny baby sigh.
Luna kissed the tip of her nose "Three…"
Charlotte's eyes drooped halfway closed.
Across the den, Ash had been leaning against the cave wall watching the scene quietly. He hadn't meant to stare, but Luna's voice carried softly through the warm air of the den and something about the song felt strangely gentle in the quiet.
Luna continued rocking "How many kisses does Charlotte need before she dreams…" She kissed her again "Four…"
Charlotte's fingers curled loosely against Luna's shirt.
Luna hummed the melody between the words, the soft tune drifting through the den like a slow breeze "How many kisses for my little flame before she falls asleep…"
She kissed Charlotte's tiny hand "Five…"
Charlotte blinked slowly, her blue eyes barely open now.
Brave had quietly shuffled closer and curled up against Luna's leg, his small warm body pressing into the furs beside her. Smartie Pants stirred sleepily and rolled closer too, drawn by the quiet warmth of the moment.
Even Chunky eventually slid down from Alo's lap and waddled across the floor to join the pile. The three phoenix chicks nestled around Luna like small golden sparks.
Ash pushed himself away from the wall and crouched nearby. He listened for another moment before speaking softly "That song."
Luna looked up "My father beast used to sing it to me," she said quietly.
Ash's expression softened.
"When I was little," Luna continued. "Whenever I couldn't sleep he would sit beside my bed and sing it until I stopped trying to stay awake."
She kissed Charlotte again "Six…"
Charlotte's eyes finally closed. The tiny phoenix girl gave one last sleepy hiccup before relaxing fully into Luna's arms.
Luna rocked her gently for a few more moments just to be sure.
The den had become completely quiet now.
Theo watched from where he sat nearby, his usual calm expression softened slightly as he observed the small cluster gathered around Luna.
Ash rested one elbow on his knee and watched as well.
The phoenix boys were asleep now, their small bodies pressed against Luna's legs and the edge of the fur pile.
Chunky snored faintly, Smartie Pants twitched in his sleep like he was dreaming about climbing something complicated. Brave remained curled closest to Charlotte.
Luna lowered her voice to a whisper "Seven…", she kissed Charlotte's hair. "And now Charlotte sleeps."
The baby phoenix didn't stir.
Luna smiled down at her with quiet affection, brushing her thumb across Charlotte's cheek "She always tries to stay awake," Luna murmured softly.
Theo answered calmly "She does not want to miss anything."
Luna laughed quietly "That's exactly what my father used to say about me."
Ash watched her for a moment longer "You're good at this."
Luna looked down at the tiny phoenix sleeping against her chest and the three little chicks curled against her legs "I really love them," she said softly.
Ash nodded "We know."
Luna leaned back slightly against the furs while the warm den surrounded them and the quiet breathing of the cubs filled the space.
For a long moment no one moved. Then Charlotte made a tiny sleepy noise and instinctively curled closer to Luna's warmth.
Luna held her gently, humming the last notes of the lullaby under her breath while the phoenix boys slept beside her like little golden embers gathered around their mother.
The morning began with crying.
Not the dramatic screaming kind that meant danger or hunger or a sudden phoenix revolt. This was a sadder sound. A confused, frustrated sound that came from a small creature who did not understand why something familiar had suddenly become uncomfortable.
Charlotte sat in Luna's lap with her tiny wings flared and her bright blue eyes wet with tears.
Luna looked just as miserable, "oh baby," she whispered helplessly.
Charlotte tried to drink again and immediately pulled back with a loud offended wail.
Theo was beside them instantlym"Her teeth," he said calmly.
Luna looked devastated "She's growing teeth already?"
"Yes."
Charlotte demonstrated this development by gnawing angrily on Luna's finger.
"Ow," Luna said softly.
The tiny phoenix girl looked deeply betrayed that biting had not solved her problem and began crying again.
Luna's eyes filled with tears almost immediately "Oh no," she said weakly. "She doesn't want milk anymore."
Theo shook his head "She still wants milk."
"She hates it, she just hates the pain in her mouth."
Luna blinked, then she burst into quiet tears anyway.
Alo walked in just in time to see the scene.
Luna crying.
Charlotte crying.
Three phoenix chicks circling anxiously around Luna's legs, then they started crying.
He moved without hesitation. Alo sat behind Luna and wrapped both arms around her and the baby at the same time, pulling them into his chest in one large protective hug. "It's okay," he said gently.
Luna wiped her eyes "she's growing up already."
Charlotte made a very loud sad baby noise.
Theo stood and walked across the den he returned a few moments later with several small smooth stones in his hands. The air around them chilled slightly as frost formed across the surface of each one. He placed them gently into Charlotte's tiny hands. "Frozen teething stones," he said.
Charlotte stared at the cold stone, then she immediately shoved it into her mouth.
The crying stopped, completely.
The entire den went quiet, Charlotte blinked in surprise. Then she gnawed on the frozen stone with intense concentration.
Luna stared "…Theo."
"Yes."
"You're a genius."
Theo inclined his head slightly "I am aware."
Luna leaned back into Alo's chest and laughed weakly while Charlotte happily chewed her frozen toy.
Meanwhile the phoenix boys had begun circling Luna again. Chunky had positioned himself directly against her ankle like a loyal little shadow. Smartie Pants climbed onto her knee and chirped loudly for attention, "Mumma mumma mumma."
Luna blinked "You said they talk now."
Alo listened for a moment "Yes."
Smartie Pants chirped again.
Alo translated.
"He wants a kiss too."
Luna scooped him up immediately, "Oh come here my smart baby."
Smartie Pants chirped happily and curled against her shoulder.
Chunky waddled closer and leaned heavily against her leg like a round golden bodyguard.
Brave was not with them.
Ash noticed first "Where is Brave."
Theo glanced around the den. Then followed the small trail of golden feathers toward the corner.
Brave stood in front of the dragon eggs, he wasn't touching them, he was simply staring. Very seriously.
Ash crouched beside him "Interesting."
Luna leaned sideways to see.
The three dragon eggs rested quietly in their nest of furs, two pink ones and one black slightly smaller egg. The shells shimmered faintly with deep metallic color.
Luna's eyes brightened "they're close."
Ash nodded slowly "yes our cubs."
Brave chirped softly at the eggs as if speaking to them.
Theo listened "he says they are coming soon."
Luna looked very pleased.
Behind them Charlotte had finished her frozen teething stone and now looked extremely satisfied with life again.
She leaned against Luna's chest and babbled happily, then she did something new. Charlotte reached into the air beside Luna, the space rippled. A small pouch appeared.
Ash Laughed.
Theo stared, Alo was stunned
Luna blinked.
Charlotte pulled a dried meat snack from inside the pouch and waved it proudly.
Luna stared at the pouch, "That's my storage."
Ash nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Alo and Theo piped up at the same time "YOU HAVE A STORAGE?"
Chunky chirped excitedly.
Smartie Pants clapped his wings.
Charlotte shoved the snack into her mouth.
Ash rubbed his face "…they can access your space."
Theo listened carefully to the chicks chattering "They have decided not to inform their father."
Luna burst into laughter "Oh my god."
Alo's eyes went wide "well i know now!"
Chunky chirped loudly.
Theo translated calmly.
"He says this was a accident please forget."
Smartie Pants chirped again.
Theo nodded "They believe the their father beast would restrict snack access."
Alo looked deeply offended "They are correct."
Charlotte pulled another snack from the pouch, the secret snack stash had already begun.
