Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Beyond the Noise

Rohan's POV

Mondays were usually loud. Complaints, laughter, half-asleep arguments.

But today, the class felt… still.

Everyone's attention was on Charlotte — the gold medalist, the sprinter, the name still echoing in yesterday's cheers. I sat by the window, watching sunlight slide across the desks, my thoughts louder than the room itself.

I'd always been that guy.

The joker.

The one who cracked a line when things got awkward.

The one who made people laugh so they wouldn't notice he never tried too hard.

But watching Charlotte win did something to me.

It wasn't jealousy.

It was something heavier.

I don't want to be remembered only as the funny guy.

Swetha noticed before anyone else. She always did.

"You okay?" she asked during break.

"Yeah," I smiled. "Just thinking about… stuff."

I didn't tell her that seeing everyone chase something real made me wonder what my thing was. What would people remember me for?

Then the announcement came.

Annual Day play auditions.

Before my brain could talk me out of it, my hand moved.

I signed up.

The reactions were priceless.

"Rohan? Acting?" Charlotte stared at me. "Do you even know how to memorize lines?"

I grinned.

"I've been acting like I don't care for two years. I think I'll manage."

Turns out, acting wasn't easy.

I forgot lines.

Got scolded.

Stood under stage lights feeling stupid instead of funny.

For the first time, quitting felt tempting.

But I didn't.

I stayed back. Practised with Swetha. Asked Aditya for voice tips. Repeated scenes until my throat hurt. Slowly, painfully, something shifted.

I wasn't hiding anymore.

On performance day, I stood centerstage in a costume slightly too big, confidence just big enough. The lights dimmed. Curtains rose.

And somehow… I didn't freeze.

Every line landed.

Every pause felt right.

The laughter wasn't accidental this time — it was earned.

When the play ended, the applause hit like a wave.

People stood up.

Me.

Rohan.

Not the sidekick.

The lead.

Backstage, swetha ruffled my hair. "You really surprised us."

"Good," I smiled. "Because this is just the beginning."

As we walked out together into the night, our shadows stretched long on the ground.

For once, I wasn't hiding behind jokes.

I was standing tall.

And it felt real.
