Chapter 82 - Chapter 78: The Lifeguard Tower

The beach had become a nightmare.

Only minutes ago, it had been paradise.

Now it felt like hell.

"Jayden!"

Keifer's voice echoed across the shoreline.

Loud.

Desperate.

Terrified.

Heads turned.

Families stopped talking.

Children stopped playing.

Even the seagulls seemed to scatter from the sheer panic in his voice.

Keifer ran.

His feet pounded against the sand as his eyes searched every inch of the beach.

Every chair.

Every umbrella.

Every shadow.

Every stranger.

Nothing.

No sign of his son.

Behind him, resort staff rushed into action.

Walkie-talkies crackled.

Security guards began sealing exits.

Employees spread out across the shoreline.

The entire resort suddenly moved with frightening urgency.

A missing baby changed everything.

Back near the tent, Jay stood frozen.

Or at least she had been.

Now she had collapsed to her knees.

The hot sand burned against her skin.

She didn't notice.

Didn't care.

Her entire body was shaking.

"I was watching a stupid crab..."

The words escaped her in a broken whisper.

A tear slid down her cheek.

Then another.

Then another.

"I was watching a crab while my son disappeared."

Her voice cracked.

Hard.

She wrapped her arms around herself as though trying to hold together the pieces that were falling apart.

"I was supposed to protect him."

A sob escaped her.

"I was supposed to be his mother."

The guilt was unbearable.

Crushing.

Suffocating.

Every horrible possibility raced through her mind.

Kidnapping.

Accidents.

The ocean.

No.

No.

No.

Not Jayden.

Anywhere but Jayden.

Meanwhile, Keifer kept running.

His lungs burned.

His heart slammed violently against his ribs.

But he didn't stop.

Couldn't stop.

Because every second felt like a lifetime.

Then—

A sharp whistle pierced the air.

Everyone looked up.

A lifeguard stood on top of the observation tower.

His arm was extended.

Pointing.

"There!"

The shout thundered across the beach.

"There!"

Keifer followed the direction instantly.

His body moved before his brain could process it.

He ran.

Faster.

Jay stumbled to her feet.

Her legs felt weak.

Her vision blurred by tears.

But she ran too.

Please.

Please.

Please.

As they got closer, the scene became clear.

A woman stood near the base of the tower.

She looked nervous.

Relieved.

Concerned.

And in her arms—

A baby.

A very familiar baby.

A baby wearing a tiny blue sun hat.

A baby crying loudly enough for the entire beach to hear.

Jayden.

For one second, time stopped.

Then Jay broke.

"JAYDEN!"

She sprinted forward.

The woman immediately looked relieved.

"Oh, thank God!"

Her shoulders sagged.

"I found him crying beside the tent. I thought he belonged to one of the families near the water, so I've been trying to find his parents!"

Jay didn't hear another word.

The second she reached them, she took Jayden into her arms.

And everything else disappeared.

The crowd.

The beach.

The resort.

The fear.

Everything.

All that mattered was him.

Warm.

Alive.

Safe.

Her knees gave out.

She collapsed onto the sand.

A sob tore from her chest.

Then another.

Then another.

She held Jayden so tightly she was afraid to blink.

As though looking away might somehow make him disappear again.

"My baby..."

Her voice trembled.

"My baby."

Tears streamed endlessly down her face.

She kissed his forehead.

His cheeks.

His tiny nose.

His little hands.

Over and over and over again.

Desperate.

Needing proof that he was real.

That she hadn't lost him.

That this wasn't some cruel dream.

A moment later, Keifer dropped beside them.

For the first time since the panic began, he stopped moving.

His hands shook.

His breathing shook.

Everything shook.

The sight of Jayden safe in Jay's arms shattered whatever composure he had been holding onto.

He wrapped his arms around both of them.

Holding them close.

Holding them tight.

Holding them like he never wanted to let go again.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody needed to.

The silence said everything.

Eventually, Jay looked up.

Her face was soaked with tears.

Her eyes were red.

Still haunted.

Still frightened.

She looked out at the endless ocean.

The beautiful beach.

The place that had terrified her more than anything ever had.

Then she looked at Keifer.

The man who had searched the entire shoreline without stopping.

The man who looked just as broken as she felt.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered,

"We're never leaving the house again."

For a moment, Keifer simply stared at her.

Then a laugh escaped him.

A shaky laugh.

Half relief.

Half exhaustion.

Jay let out a watery laugh of her own.

And together they held Jayden tighter.

The crisis was over.

Their son was safe.

But neither of them would ever look at that beach the same way again.

**THE CRISIS IS AVERTED!**
