Chapter 41 - When the Mountain Meets the Sky

The Grand Hall of House Dainhart stood as the beating heart of the family—the place where the destinies of its bloodline were decided.

Within these sacred walls, the decisions that could alter the future of the entire house were made. Here, the greatest rewards were bestowed upon those who brought honor to the family, and here, the harshest punishments were passed upon members of the direct bloodline who had stained its name.

The hall was far more than a magnificent structure.

It was the embodiment of the authority and prestige that House Dainhart had forged through countless centuries of glory.

One needed only to step inside once to understand that this was a place unlike any other.

Its vast interior was so immense that an entire village could have been built within its walls without exhausting the available space. Towering stone pillars stretched toward an impossibly high ceiling, upon which ancient magical engravings chronicled the family's long history, legendary battles, and countless triumphs.

The floor, carved from polished black marble, reflected the shimmering light of colossal crystal chandeliers, filling the chamber with an overwhelming sense of majesty that made even the most powerful individuals instinctively feel insignificant.

The surrounding walls were adorned with priceless relics, ancient banners, and legendary weapons once wielded by the greatest ancestors of House Dainhart, making the hall resemble less a court and more a monument preserving the history of an entire continent.

Even if one were to travel from the frozen northern frontiers to the southernmost reaches of the continent...

They would never find another hall capable of matching its magnificence or dignity.

Amidst that overwhelming grandeur...

Leo stepped forward with calm, unwavering strides.

The echoes of his footsteps reverberated throughout the enormous chamber, yet his expression remained perfectly composed, as though he were not standing before the highest authority within his family, but merely returning to a place he had visited countless times before.

His gaze swept quietly across the hall.

On both sides sat dozens of the elders of House Dainhart—men who had devoted decades upon decades to mastering the arcane arts until each had reached the Seventh Circle. Every single one of them possessed enough power to reduce an entire city to ruins should they choose to unleash their full strength.

Opposite them...

Stood dozens of the family's swordsmen.

Veterans whose expressions reflected countless years of battle and discipline.

Every one of them had reached the rank of Sword Expert.

Among them...

Three had already crossed that threshold...

Ascending into the realm of Sword Masters.

The mere gathering of such overwhelming military might in a single location...

Was enough to bring an entire kingdom to its knees without encountering meaningful resistance.

And yet...

All of that was merely the prelude.

At the very front of the hall...

Upon the highest throne—the grandest seat, radiating unmatched authority and dignity...

Sat the man toward whom every eye naturally gravitated.

The Patriarch of House Dainhart.

An Eighth Circle grand mage.

A man who was not merely the ruler of the family...

But one of the greatest powers walking the continent itself.

Leo slowly raised his eyes toward him, studying him in silence for several moments.

Then he thought calmly to himself,

"As I am now..."

"I am no match for him."

"Not yet."

Silence consumed the hall.

A silence so absolute that even the sound of breathing seemed unusually loud.

Then...

One of the elders slowly rose from his seat.

His solemn voice echoed throughout the chamber.

"Leo Dainhart."

"The youngest son of House Dainhart."

"You stand accused of crimes that demand judgment."

His gaze remained fixed upon Leo as he continued.

"First..."

"You departed the family's territory without official authorization."

"Second..."

"You assaulted the gate guards and compelled them to sever their own ears."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Do you acknowledge these offenses?"

Leo did not hesitate.

Nor did he attempt to justify himself.

Instead, he answered with unwavering composure.

"Yes."

Soft murmurs spread among several of the elders.

The elder gave a slight nod before respectfully turning toward the throne.

"Then..."

"We ask the honored Patriarch to deliver his judgment."

Every gaze shifted upward.

The Patriarch, however...

Did not speak immediately.

Instead, he silently observed Leo for several long moments.

It was as though he were not looking at a mere young man...

But attempting to peer into the soul hidden behind those tranquil eyes.

Several long seconds passed.

Then, at last...

His deep voice shattered the silence.

"Do you..."

"Regret what you have done?"

Leo lifted his head without retreating even the slightest bit.

His answer came without hesitation.

"No."

"I regret nothing."

The moment those words left his mouth...

Several elders exploded in outrage.

"Impudent!"

"How dare you speak to the Patriarch with such arrogance?!"

"Know your place, boy!"

Their furious voices echoed throughout the chamber.

But only for an instant.

Suddenly—

An overwhelming aura erupted from the Patriarch's body.

Within a single heartbeat...

An incomprehensible pressure descended upon the entire hall.

Everyone felt as though an entire mountain had been placed upon their shoulders.

The elders froze where they stood.

Many were forced to bend beneath the crushing weight.

Even those who had reached the Seventh Circle...

Even the Sword Masters...

Found themselves incapable of moving so much as a single finger.

Leo...

Remained standing.

Unshaken.

Proud.

The terrifying pressure mercilessly bore down upon his body.

His very bones groaned beneath the unimaginable burden.

Yet...

His expression never changed.

He did not bow.

Nor did he allow the slightest trace of pain to appear upon his face.

The Patriarch watched him in silence.

Then asked in a cold voice that sounded more like a test than an accusation.

"Was what you did..."

"Necessary?"

Leo answered immediately, never breaking eye contact.

"Those who forget their place..."

"Must be reminded of it."

Silence followed.

Then...

The faintest smile appeared upon the Patriarch's lips.

"A fine answer."

The crushing pressure vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.

The entire hall breathed once more.

The elders slowly regained control of their bodies, many wiping sweat from their brows as they were reminded once again of the immeasurable gulf separating themselves from an Eighth Circle Archmage.

The Patriarch calmly rose from his throne.

He turned toward the exit.

Yet before leaving...

He stopped.

Without looking back, he spoke.

"Prove yourself..."

"In the upcoming trials."

Then, after a brief pause, he added.

"Only then..."

"Will I determine whether the change within you..."

"Is genuine..."

"Or nothing more than empty words."

With those final words...

He departed the hall.

No one dared speak until his presence had completely disappeared.

Leo remained where he stood.

Silently watching the Patriarch's departing figure.

Without uttering a single word.

Yet deep within...

He understood perfectly.

That had not been a trial.

It had been...

His very first true test since returning to House Dainhart.

Elsewhere within the territory of House Dainhart...

Dion swung his sword with relentless intensity.

Strike after strike cleaved through the air, each swing carrying enough force to produce deafening explosions across the training grounds.

Sweat poured down his body.

Yet the exhilarated smile upon his face never once faded.

He was not training out of hatred.

Nor out of anger.

Rather...

For the first time in many years...

He felt as though he had finally found an opponent who might truly be worthy of crossing blades with him.

Resting his sword across his shoulder, a smile filled with excitement spread across his face.

Looking toward the heavens, he quietly muttered,

"Two weeks from now..."

Don't disappoint me.
