Mary reached into her bag with hands that shook violently, searching for her phone. With cold fingertips, she punched in 911. "Please help us! We're being attacked on the road," Mary's sentence was cut short as a heavy thud slammed against the car's body.

The sound of the gunshot was so close that Mary's ears rang. She jolted in fright, causing the phone in her grip to slip and fall onto the dark floor of the car. The attackers' gray SUV was now directly behind them, only a few yards away.

John did not stay idle. He drew his firearm from beneath his blazer and returned fire through the gaps in the rear window, which had already shattered into a spiderweb of cracks. Tiny shards of glass showered into the cabin every time a bullet struck the window frame. "Stay down, Miss! Do not raise your heads for a second!" John shouted, his voice booming over the roar of the engine and the whine of bullets.
