Chapter 36 - The Ticking Machine

The late morning sun stretched across Nakayama, casting long shadows over the well-kept turf. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of spring grass and the distant hum of early spectators. Yet near the far stretch, the world contracted to a single figure: Sakura Star O.

She moved with calm, calculated precision, each stride measured yet effortless, as though the track itself bent to her rhythm. There was no frantic scramble to prove herself, no panic in her posture. Every motion was deliberate - a machine operating at its own pace, silently racing against both time and expectation.

Fumino Hase leaned lightly against the rail, notebook closed for the moment. Watching was enough.

"She's… extraordinary," Fumino whispered. "And she's doing it entirely alone. Output is insane."

A few meters away, Sora Kaiya observed with quiet intensity. Hands in his pockets, posture relaxed, yet every micro-detail registered in his mind: subtle strain in her legs, minuscule tremors in her shoulders, the tension in her breathing that she herself didn't notice. To Sora, Sakura Star O wasn't just running; she was operating at the edge of her body and mind, her domain unlocked almost accidentally, her hidden fractures already forming.

She slowed at the far turn, head tilting slightly, amber eyes scanning the track like a general assessing her field. Her breaths were even, her posture perfect. To anyone else, flawless. But Sora saw beneath the surface: micro-fractures forming in her stride, tiny shifts that could spiral into career-threatening injuries if left unchecked.

He stepped onto the grass as she eased into a relaxed jog, voice calm and even.

"You're performing beyond what your body can sustain," he said quietly, yet firmly.

Sakura Star O turned to him slowly, her expression serene, amber eyes sharp. "I'm fine," she replied evenly, almost detached.

"No," Sora said gently. "You're already showing subtle injuries you don't even realize. You opened domain after the Yayoi Sho. Your body is compensating without your awareness. If you continue like this, it will break you. I can make you perform without risking your health."

Her gaze didn't waver. There was a flicker of interest, but pride and calculation were stronger.

"And why would I need that? You're only approaching me because I won."

Sora choked and coughed lightly. "That is part of it," he admitted. "But it's not just that. I can make sure your body survives while still performing at your level. You don't have to destroy yourself to win."

"I am loyal to Team Ankles, to the Sakura Family," she said quietly, voice steady. "I didn't join the track to be poached. I already won the Yayoi Sho. That's my team, and I've carried them here. I don't need… whatever you're suggesting."

Sora's eyes softened slightly, not with reproach but observation. He wasn't trying to force her; he was offering clarity, insight, and a chance to avoid a collapse she didn't yet see.

"Loyalty is admirable," he said. "I can see by your condition that your team doesn't care about you, that you haven't received much attention. I can tell when you rest, when you train, how your body reacts, and how you feel. I can manage what they don't."

"…I've managed fine until now," she said, voice calm but firm. "I don't need someone to step in and… babysit."

Sora's gaze softened further, voice steady but warm. "This isn't babysitting. It's… knowing your limits. I can make sure your body lasts. You don't need to overextend. And if you continue like this, every win risks your health."

She tilted her head slightly. "…So you're training, what's her name? Nishino Cross? Tamamo Cross?" Her voice was quiet but edged with challenge.

Sora did not deny it. "Yes. But that doesn't change the fact that your body is overextending. And that's something I can control, something you cannot do alone."

Sakura Star O's calm exterior did not falter. "…I see. I carry my team, and I carry my victories. I don't need your help."

Fumino, still observing, scribbled a note:

Extraordinary output. G1 legend level. Domain opened. Risk of collapse extreme.

Sora's inner thought was quieter, almost resigned:

She's a stoic hero. Even if short-lived. Fragile because she doesn't know her own limits, but brilliant beyond comparison.

Sakura Star O gave a subtle nod and returned to her team, resuming her calm, precise drills.

She caught herself thinking briefly as she trained: You only came to poach me because I won. I've carried my team this far; I owe them my loyalty. I don't need your guidance… You're shaping the very competition I'll face.

Sora watched quietly, noting the faint tremor in her shoulder, the micro-shifts in stride, the subtle fatigue hidden behind her calm exterior. "Sigh… it was worth a shot, even if I was late. Whatever. Let her run; I still have a system that can reverse tragedies, we will try again later."
