Draen's heat was nothing like the instincts experienced by ordinary animals.
For dragons, especially ancient dragons like him, heat was a dangerous period where instinct could easily overpower reason. Their mana as well as emotions became unstable and intensified. The desire to claim and protect their mate grew stronger than ever.
Many dragons spent this period with their partners to ease the burden but Draen knew better than anyone that Lewis was not a dragon.
Staying with Lewis would certainly make things easier.
Every instinct within him urged him to seek Lewis out, to keep him close and never let him leave his sight.
However, Draen refused to give in to those urges.
He had already hurt Lewis once before when he allowed his emotions regarding Drakar to cloud his judgment. The memory still stayed in his mind. After everything that had happened, they were only beginning to rebuild the trust between them.
